On behalf of the International Melges 32 Class Association it is with great pleasure 

that I invite you to Porto Cervo, Sardinia for the very first Audi Melges 32 World 

Championship, hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. It is one of my personal 

favorite racing venues in the world and well known for its warm hospitality and sheer 

elegance. With this in mind, the Melges 32 Class is honored to hold its first World 

Championship in Porto Cervo. 

In addition to exquisite surroundings, beautiful waters and premium yachting conditions, 

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda also guarantees world class regatta management, on and 

off the water. 

The International Melges 32 Class is extremely fortunate to have the generous support 

of 2009 Worlds sponsor, Audi. In 2008, they delivered the first Audi Melges 32 Sailing 

Series that was hugely successful. That partnership reunited this year, with yet another 

four-stage sailing series with the final act culminating in Cagliari. 

We very much encourage you to compete and enjoy all that high performance one 

design racing has to offer at the Audi Melges 32 World Championship in Porto Cervo 

this September.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda is delighted to welcome Owners and Crews from the 

Melges 32 Class to Porto Cervo in occasion of the first World Championship in the history 

of this young and very promising Class. 

Our Club is pleased to organize the Audi Melges 32 World Championship 2009 and we 

hope that this will be the first step in a long cooperation between the YCCS, the Class 

and its owners. 

I would like to thank the title sponsor Audi which is investing in the expansion of the 

Melges 32 Class as one of the most interesting one-design classes of the moment. Audi 

is also an official partner of the YCCS and collaborates with the Club adding prestige 

to our events thanks to a common enthusiasm for sailing and for new challenges. 

The waters off Porto Cervo will thus bear witness, in the final regatta of the 2009 season, 

to what is sure to be another top level racing event and we thank the Owners and Crews 

who will be with us in Costa Smeralda.

NOTICE OF RACE




1. ORGANIZING AUTHORITY 

The Organizing Authority (OA) is the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda 

(YCCS) in conjunction with the International Melges 32 

Association (IM32CA).

3. RULES 

3.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in 

the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2009-2012 and by the 

current sailing regulations defined by the FIV in Italy for 2009. 

3.2 The “class rules” for the purposes of the definition of “rules” 

are the International Melges 32 Class Rules (IM32CR). 

4. ADVERTISING 

The advertising is permitted according to Class Rule. 

To conform with regulation 20.4 ISAF, the Organizing authority 

may ask competitors to display sponsor flag and/or stickers. 

Flags and stickers must be displayed beginning 21 September 

until the end of the event on 27 September. The correct 

procedure will be detailed on the sailing instructions. 

5. ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY 

5.1 The race is open to all boats of the International 

Melges 32 Class Association. 

5.2 IM32CR Section C.9 MEMBERSHIP AND ELIGIBILITY, 

and all subsections, shall apply. 

5.3 All competitors shall be in compliance with the ISAF Eligibility 

Rules, ISAF Sailor Classification Code and Melges 32 

Class Rules. As per Class Rule C. 9.5, IM32CA delegated 

to a Classification Code Committee the authority in 

determining a competitor’s status within the spirit 

of the class rules. A representative of the ISAF Sailor 

Classification Commission will be present during 

registration and will carry out spot checks. 

5.4 Italian competitors shall submit their FIV licenses valid for the 

year 2009 with medical stamp. 

5.5 Pre-registration should be submitted no later than 1 August 

to Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on e-mail at secretariat@yccs.it, 

or fax to +39 0789 91213 

Each entry is required to submit to the following documents 

to the IM32CA on e-mail at classadmin@melges32.com, 

or by fax: +1 (912) 756-6728 by 13 August 2009: 

• Crew Declaration Form (App. 3.1) 

• Owner Compliance Declaration (App. 4) 

Each entry is required to submit a Sail Declaration 

Form (App. 3.2) to the IM32CA prior to the close 

of onsite registration on 22 September 2009:

5.6 Registration must be completed before 13:00 hrs 

on 22 September and all documents required in this NOR 

be presented at the race office. 

The OA will be allowed to copy them. 

Registration is valid and complete only if all race documents 

are approved and accepted by the IM32CA:

• Sail Declaration Form (App. 3.2) 

• Owner Compliance Declaration (App. 4)

6. ENTRY FEE 

The fee is €800 and includes launching, hauling, berthing, 

trailer parking and two (2) cars per yacht in designated areas

From the second day of race, the intended time of the first 

warning signal will be posted on the official notice board 

before 18.00 hrs of the previous day. If no notice is displayed, 

starting time will be the same as previous day. 

On the last day of the regatta, no warning signal will be made 

after 14:25 hrs. 

Social event programme will be affixed on the Official 

Notice Board. 

8. MEASUREMENT AND WEIGHING 

8.1 All competitors should observe class measurements rules. 

8.2 All crew weight must be checked before Tuesday, 22 

September at secretary office of Yacht Club Costa 

Smeralda. There will be no re-weigh checks during 

the championship. 

8.3 There will be the following measurement checks: 

• Sail measurement 

• Corrector Weight 

• Lifeline 

• Safety Equipment 

• Random Measurement Checks • Mast Cylinder 

8.4 The entry lists for sails checks, boat inspections and crew 

weighing shall be prepared by the Class, in a random order, 

to be confirmed by owners. For sail measurement, two 

members of the crew from each boat are requested to help. 

9. HAUL-OUT RESTRICTIONS 

9.1 All boats shall be launched maximum two hours before 

the allotted boat check timeslot 

9.2 Boats shall not be hauled out during the series, except with 

and according to the terms of prior written permission 

of the Race Committee. 

9.3 The Organizing Authority may impose haul-out restrictions. 

10. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 

The Sailing Instructions will be available upon registration 

at the Race Office and at www.yccs.it. 

11. VENUE 

Racing will be conducted in the waters off of 

Costa Smeralda, Italy. 

12. COURSE 

The course shall be windward – leeward configuration with an 

offset mark beside the windward mark and leeward gate, 

within six miles from the shore. 

13. SCORING 

13.1 Up to ten (10) races may be held. A maximum of 3 races may 

be held on any racing day. 

13.2 The Low Point System of Appendix ‘A’ will apply. 

13.3 When six (6) races have been completed, the worst score 

will be discarded. 

13.4 Four (4) races are needed for the regatta to be scored 

as the Melges 32 World Championship.

14. VHF 

14.1 During the starting procedure, in addition to sound and flag 

signals, the Race Committee may use VHF 72 channel to call 

out OCS sail numbers or bow numbers. The use of VHF radio 

communication, or failure to do so, by the Race Committee, 

shall not be considered a valid reason for protest or request 

of redress in any case. 

14.2 A yacht shall neither make radio transmissions while racing, 

nor receive radio communications not available to all 

yachts. This restriction also applies to mobile phones. 

15. PRIZES 

List of prizes will be noticed together with 

the Sailing Instructions (SIs). 

16. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY 

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own 

risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The Organizing Authority 

will not accept any liability for material damage or personal 

injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, 

during, or after the regatta. 

17. INSURANCE 

Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party 

liability insurance with a minimum cover of €1.000.000,00 per 

event or the equivalent if expressed in other currency. 

Proof of insurance shall be provided upon registration.
