WIRED MATTRESS
WIRED MATTRESSES
Rockwool 159 is a lightly bonded heavy stone wool
mat ,stitched on galvanised wired mesh with
galvanised wire.
The wired mat is especially suitable for industrial
installations such as high-pressure steam pipes,
reactors, furnaces, etc. where high demands are
made on the temperature resistance of the
insulation.
Rockwool Wired Back Mattresses come in various
densities, lengths and thicknesses
Rockwool 159 (Wired mat)
Installation guidelines
Assembly
Cut the wired mat to length, so that the mat fits the pipe with slight pre-stressing. The closing joints must
be staggered at an angle of at least 30 degrees to each other. The closing joints of the mats (lengthwise
and circular joints) must be wired together using e.g. steel wire min. 0,5 mm or secured with mat hooks.
Stainless steel pipes and pipes with a temperature of > 350°C should preferably be insulated with
Rockwool 159 SW, in which both the mesh and the stitching wire is in stainless steel. If the mats are
assembled in multiple layers, both the lengthwise and circular joints must be staggered (‘masonry bond’).
Support construction
Given the limited pressure resistance of wired mats, in most cases a support is required for the board
cladding. As a guideline, assume that a support is required every 3 to 4 metres.
Finishing
The insulation should be finished with a metal (e.g. aluminium) cladding. Where necessary, expansion
joints are provided to cater for expansion of the pipes. Both the lengthwise and circular joints are
fastened with sheet-metal screws: hard aluminium or stainless steel 1/2”, 8/metre. Close the expansion
joints with a steel tensioning wire. Connections to mountings, head and end caps, etc. should be made
watertight using a suitable sealant.
PIPE SECTIONS
Rockwool Pipe Sections are a pre-fabricated stone
wool pipe section. The sections are supplied split
and hinged for easy snap-on assembly, and are
suitable for the thermal and acoustic insulation
of industrial pipe work
Pipe Sections are supplied in 1.2 m Lengths
Advantages
• Excellent thermal and acoustic insulation
• Easy to handle and install
• Wide range of diameters and insulation thicknesses
• Optimal performance due to the extensive range of diameters
• Suitable for use over stainless steel
• For temperatures up to 350°C, a support construction is not generally necessary
• Long lasting
• Excellent fit provides optimal performance
• Fast return on investment
Installation guidelines
Assembly
Fit the Rockwool 850 closely around the pipe, with the lengthwise (horizontal) joint turned towards the
underside. The lengthwise joints must be staggered at an angle of at least 30 degrees to each other. The
shell is secured with galvanised binding wire (thickness 0.5 mm, at least 3/m). For insulation thickness
above 100 mm (or temperatures > 250°C) the insulation should be applied in at least two layers. In the
case of multi-layer insulation it is recommended that the lengthwise and crosswise joints are staggered
(‘masonry bond’).
Support construction
On pipes where mechanical loading (e.g. strong vibrations) of the insulation is expected and/or the
temperature is higher than 350°C, a support structure (spacers) should be constructed. The number of
spacers depends on the temperature and the mechanical load. As a guide, the following intermediate
distances can be used:
Horizontal pipe work: 3 to 4 m
Vertical pipe work: 5 to 6 m
Finishing
All pipe sections should be finished with a metal (e.g. aluminium) cladding. Where necessary, expansion
joints are required to cater for expansion of the pipes. Both the lengthwise and circular joints are
fastened with sheet-metal screws: hard aluminium or stainless steel 1/2”, 8 per metre. Close expansion
joints with a steel tensioning wire. Connections to mountings, head and end caps, etc. should be made
watertight using an appropriate sealant.
POLYURETHANE FOAM
RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAM
We manufacture rigid polyurethane foam slabs.
Polyurethane is an isolative material with excellent
thermal
properties. Polyurethane is mostly used in cold
applications from –15 C to 110 C.
Polyurethane is supplied in sheets of 2.440 x 1.220 x
thickness on request.
PIC FIRE RETARDANT FOAM
Polyisocyanurate foam has superior fire properties to
polyurethane foam. This is most obvious in resistance to
ignition and in smoke obscuration during standard tests
POLYURETHANE FOAM – PU35
DATA SHEET
Polyurethane PU 35 Data Sheet
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYURETHANE/POLYISOCYANURATE RIGID FOAMS
Both polyurethane and polyisocyanurate rigid foams are characterised by a very small
closed cell structure. Microscopic examination shows cells have thin poly-Metric
membranes as faces and solid struts at there edges. The gases in the cells endow the foarns
with very low thermal conductivities, the strength of the foams is due to the network of the
struts.
Because the overall volumetric proportion of plastic in insulation foams is about three to
four percent, their most obvious characteristic is very low density. This is typically 30 to 50
kg/m3 (2 to 3lb/ft3) and results in extreme ease of handling and installation - a very
significant advantage.
Typical physical properties of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams at nominal
densities of 32 and 50kg/m3 (2 and 3lb/ft3) are given in Table 1.
The information show is for slabstock foams as the physical form of the product facilitates
preparation of test samples that give representative data. The properties of foam
produced in other forms, such as spray foam or in-situ pipe insulation, may differ in detail
but will be generally similar.
Structural properties
Data show polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams are sufficiently strong to be suitable
for applications where they are required to contribute to the overall struck tural properties
of the insulated component. Structural properties will increase with density, for
applications which require additional load-bearing properties, such as pipe supports,
densities of 80 to 100kg/m3 (5 to 6lb/ft3) may be used.
POLYURETHANE FOAM – PU35
Moisture vapour transmission and water uptake.
As polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams are almost entirely closed celled, water uptake
and the transmission of water vapour are very low. However, in common with other
insulating materials, both organic and inorganic, it is recommended that a moistureimpermeable
barrier is installed over the foam to ensure that the insulation remains
unimpaired over a long life.
Thermal insulation
The thermal conductivity of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams when first made is of
the order of 0.017 W/mK (c 12 Btu in/ft h F). If the foam is covered by a gas-tight barrier, this
extremely low value can be retained. Long-term retention of low conductivity values has been
observed in many examples in different fields of application. Where a gas-tight barrier is not
used the thermal conductivity will increase typically to 0.023 W/mk (0.16 Btu in/ft h F), by
the well-understood mechanism of air diffusion through the cell membranes into the cells.
Extensive laboratory measurements carried out over many years, have aided the study
and understanding of the thermal conductivity of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate
foams in plant applications. In addition there have been many cases where foam has
been examined after several years in service.
1. A sample of polyisocyanurate foam, taken from the insulation of an ammonia
tank, was found to have a thermal conductivity of 0.025 W/mK (0,18 Btu in/ft2hF)
at 10 C (50 F). The insulation had been in place for 10 years on this tank, normally
operating at -40 C (-40 F), at an ICI chemical complex in NE England.
2. 2. Several pofyisocyanurate samples were taken from the insulation of vessels and
tanks at a major petrochemical complex after many years in service. The thermal
conductivities measured were in the range of 0.023 to 0.025 W/mk (0.016 to 0.018
Btu in/ft2h F) at 10C(50F),
There are several examples not associated with plant applicatons. In which low thermal
conductivities have been recorded after many years of service.
POLYURETHANE FOAM – PU35
1. Metal faced polyurethane panels which had been used to insulate a cold store in
England for more than 10 years had a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK (0.15
Btu in/ft2h F)at 10C(50F).
2. Samples have been taken from domestic chest freezers removed from service
because of compressor failure. These polyurethane foams were found to have,
thermal conductivities in the range 0.017 to 0.018 W/mK (0.12 to 0.13 Btu in/ft2h F)
at 10 C (50 F).
The understanding gained from long-term laboratory measurements, coupled with
these - and many other - examples of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams that
have given many years of reliable service provide a large data bank of knowledge and
experience.
Note : The very low value of thermal conductivity is partly due to the use of CFC 11 as the
blowing agent and its entrapment within the cell structure. Legislation Such as the
Montreal Protocol is now limiting the availability of CFC 11. Developments in foam
technology, based on alternative blowing agents, are reducing and will eliminate the use of
CFC 11. The new foams will retain all the desirable characteristics of established foams.
Stability and service temperatures
Data show pofyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams have very good dimensional stability
over a wide range of temperatures and conditions. They have been used for many years
for the insulation of tanks at cryogenic temperatures. The upper temperature limit for
continuous use of polyurethane foam is 100 C (212 F), the more thermally stable
polyisocyanurate foam can be used continuously at temperature up to 140 C (284 F).
Corrosion resistance
The closed-cell nature of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams will prevent the
corrosion of mild steel substrates by protecting them from the ingress of water and
oxygen. For effective protection, the surface must be in good condition before the foam is
applied and it is normal practise to coat the substrate with an appropriate primer before
the foam insulation is installed. It is also recommended that a primer be applied to stainless
steel substructures if the working temperature is likely to exceed 60 C (140 F).
POLYURETHANE FOAM – PU35
Fire performance of polyurethane/polyisocyanurate rigid foams
Polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams are organic materials and hence combustible. Precautions must be
taken to ensure that they are correctly formulated, installed and that the appropriate protection is
provided.
Polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams should never be used without a protective outer layer. In addition, care
must be taken during installation and maintenance, when the foam may be exposed, to protect it from potential
sources of ignition.
However, over 700000 tones of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams are used in the building industry
generally, where fire regulations have invariably to be met. This is possible because the foams themselves and
composites containing them can meet a wide range of stringent national and international fire regulations.
Polyisocyanurate foam has superior fire properties to polyurethane foam. This is most obvious in resistance to
ignition and in smoke obscuration during standard tests.
One of the reasons why polyisocyanurate gives benefits in this area I that at the high temperatures encountered in a
fire, the surface may degrade to form a carbonaceous char which protects the foam behind it and restricts further
involvement in the fire. In many plant applicatons this is a very desirable characteristic.
Typical fire test properties
Typical properties of foams in a selection of fire tests are listed in Table 2. There are many national, and an
increasing number of international, fire tests in existence, the table gives only an indication of the fire performance
in the better known tests.
Fire test data from national tests will often be necessary to satisfy local regulations. No attempt should be made to
extrapolate from or to compare the results of different tests fire performance is not sufficiently well understood for
data manipulation to be justified.
Large-scale tests
As in other fields of fire testing, investigation of the performance of plant insulation sometimes involves large scale
ad hoc tests. One such test programme has demonstrated that 50mm (2 in) of polyisocyanurate foam - which is
combustible -offers comparable performance to 90mm (3 5 in) of cellular glass - which is not - in a composite fire
protection system applied to 200-mm (6-in) diameter pipes.
The external surfaces were exposed to temperatures up to 1,000 C (1,830 F) and internal temperature changes
recorded. Up to 800 C (1,470 F), polyisocyanurate foam formed a carbonaceous char about 40-mm (1-5 in) thick,
no cracks penetrated the full depth of the foam. In the cellular glass, many interconnected cracks, some more
than 25mm (1-in) wide, penetrated its full depth. At 1,000 C (1,830 F), neither insulation was very effective.
THERMAL INSULATING PLASTER
TPH 300 CEMENT
TPH 300 is a Multi-purpose non asbestos plaster supplied in 40kg bags in a dry powder form. When mixed with clean
water, it dries to a smooth dust free, hard, water resistant finish. No protection from the elements is necessary. If so
desired, it may be painted and can be used both indoors and outside.
TPH 300 can be applied over other plaster or fibre insulations (Blankets or modules), providing it has been covered
and secured with wire mesh or expanded metal in case of flat overhangs.
Best results can be obtained by applying two coats at 5mm thick, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the
second coat.
HAND CLEANER AND SANITISER
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
ENVIRO-CLEAN Hand Cleaner is a natural, biodegradable, environmentally friendly hand cleaner.
It cleans hands with a gel based solvent that contains micro beads of foam that act as a pumice
stone. This hand cleaner has a fresh citrus scent and contains no artificial fragrances. The Micro
beads are small enough to get into all areas, tough enough to clean grime, yet light enough to
float away, and will not block drains like other cleaners that contain grit. Hand Cleaners contain
glycerine for skin conditioning.
