Key responsibilities: 

• The German Road Safety Council e.V. (‘DVR‘) was founded 

in 1969 as an umbrella organization for governmental and 

private institutions involved in road safety (220 members) 

• DVR is running a German & international Eco-Driving Center 

of Excellence 

• DVR‘s objectives are: 

Coordination of the numerous nationwide road safety 

activities of governmental and private stakeholders 

Development and Coordination of new methods to avoid 

road accidents

Ecodriving in German Driving Schools 

• „Do it first - Do it right“: Ecodriving is the only way of modern 

driving 

– Since 1999 in learner driver education and examination 

Integrated in theoretical and practical education (!) 

Integrated in theoretical and practical drivers license

"Eco-Driving for joung drivers"(2006) 

• DVR und BVF jointly manage the campaign / projects 

• 4,400 Driving instructors trained in train-the-trainer seminars 

(§33a FahrlG Compulsory Further Training) 

• DVR und BVF developed and issued a new compendium – 

strictly oriented at European GDE-Matrix 

• Campaign running time: 2006 to 2008 sponsored by Ministry of 

Transport (post 2008 ongoing implementation)

What is Ecodriving 

Ecodriving means smarter and fuel-efficient driving. Also 

improving road safety, Ecodriving represents a new driving 

culture making best use of advanced vehicle technologies. 

As important module of sustainable mobility, Ecodriving 

considerably contributes to policy targets and fulfils 

stakeholders' demands. 

• Also known as ‘modern driving’ or ‘smarter driving’
