Campaign: "Drive Cool – Save Fuel"
• German Ministry of Transport approved campaign & budget
"Eco-Driving for joung drivers"(2006)
• DVR und BVF jointly manage the campaign / projects
• 4,400 Driving instructors trained in train-the-trainer seminars
(§33a FahrlG Compulsory Further Training)
• DVR und BVF developed and issued a new compendium –
strictly oriented at European GDE-Matrix
What is Ecodriving
Ecodriving means smarter and fuel-efficient driving. Also
improving road safety, Ecodriving represents a new driving
culture making best use of advanced vehicle technologies.
As important module of sustainable mobility, Ecodriving
considerably contributes to policy targets and fulfils
stakeholders' demands.
• Also known as ‘modern driving’ or ‘smarter driving’
• Safe and smart style of driving
• More energy-efficient vehicle procurement
• Technology based, supports modern engine technology
• Narrowing the gap between real world and test cycle results
Basic principles of Ecodriving
Golden Rules of Ecodriving
• Anticipate Traffic Flow
• Maintain a steady speed at low RPM
• Shift up early
• Check tyre pressures frequently
• Avoid dead weight and aerodynamic drag
11
Effects of Ecodriving
Impacts on road safety
• Anticiapatory driving style and enlarged safety distance
help to recognize hazards early and avoid dangerous
situations
• More relaxed driving style reduces stress while driving
Traffic jam
Effects of Ecodriving
Ecological and Economical Benefits
• Average decrease in fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions
by 15-25%
• Reduced noise (lower revs)
• Lower maintenance costs (e.g. brakes, tyres)
Evaluation:Results & benefits
Overall:
• Less concentration or attention error
(e.g. the driver fails to yield the right way)
• Less orientation errors
(e.g. when turning the driver chooses the wrong lane)
• Less risk errors
(e.g. the driver falls below a safe distance)
• Less procedural errors
(e.g. when turning the driver is unsure in the handling
of his/her vehicle)
• Less fuel consumption
• Reduction in insurance and liability claims
• Journey time and average speed are still
the same to controll group
• Positive effects on attitude and motivation
Integration of Ecodriving in the regulatory
framework of driving school education
• Defining standards and contents for Ecodriving education in
driving schools
– Theoretical and practical
• Integrate Ecodriving in driving school curricula
• Integrate Ecodriving in drivers license testing
Success factors:
• Ecodriving contents in education and examination must be
in accordance with each other
• Ecodriving MUST be part of the practical education and
examination to make it important to learners
• Same Ecodriving knowledge and experience of instructors
and examiners
