RALEIGH—Randolph County’s Ched Chriscoe is North Carolina’s most recent millionaire. The
Seagrove man won $1 million when he Power Played his Sept. 23 Powerball ticket and matched all five
white balls drawn.
Chriscoe used his wedding anniversary for two of the numbers on his ticket and then quick-picked the
rest. He says he will share the more than $678,000 he received after taxes with his family, use some to
fix up his house, and save the rest. He purchased his winning ticket at the Short Stop on East Dixie Drive
in Asheboro.
In the Saturday, Sept. 26 Powerball drawing, three tickets sold in North Carolina matched four out of five
white balls plus the Powerball and are worth $10,000 each. These tickets were sold at Food Lion on
North Main Street in Holly Springs, Kangaroo Express on Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro, and I-40
Super Gas on Highway 210 in Benson.
A total of 63,957 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Saturday, Sept. 26 Powerball
drawing ranging from $10,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $463,341. No one matched all five
white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Wednesday, Sept. 30 Powerball
drawing is an estimated $170 million!
If it wasn’t already his favorite game to play, “Carolina Cash 5” would be Winfred Smith Jr.’s favorite
game now. The Staley man won $211,657 when his ticket for the Sept. 27 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing
matched all five numbers drawn.
Smith bought his winning ticket from Quick N Easy on Highway 64 East in Ramseur. He says he will use
some of his winnings, which totaled $143,927.08 after taxes, to travel.

Double, triple and quadruple checking her numbers online, Alicia Sanchez of Monroe says she couldn’t
believe it when she saw that all five numbers on her Sept. 22 “Carolina Cash 5” ticket matched the
numbers drawn. That night’s top prize was $204,832, but two tickets matched all five numbers so the
prize was split in half. Sanchez’s share was $102,416, or $69,643.20 after taxes.
Sanchez bought her winning ticket at the Petro Express on West Franklin Street in Monroe. She says
she will use some of her winnings for moving expenses, and the rest will go into a college fund for her
son.
A trip to Walt Disney World is in the future for Amanda Abell of Morehead City. She bought a “Diamonds
& Gold” instant scratch-off ticket from Jim Dandy on Arendell Street in Morehead City and won $100,000!
Abell, who received $68,001.60 after taxes, says she called her boyfriend when she realized she’d won
the top prize. After her trip to Florida, she says the rest of her winnings will go in the bank.
Wooooooo! The first top prize on the Ric Flair-themed instant scratch-off game, “Wooooooo!”, has been
claimed. Kevin Efird of New London won $100,000 and claimed his prize this afternoon.
Efird bought his winning ticket at Village Mart on U.S. 52 North in Albemarle. He says he doesn’t have
many plans for his winnings, other than buying some new tires for his truck.
The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $5.2 million total in instant scratchoff
ticket prizes since Thursday, Sept. 25. Also since Thursday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more
than $935,000. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won nearly $297,000 and 13 tickets won the top prize of
$5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won nearly $348,000.
