Signs of Hearing
Loss
Rarely does hearing loss occur suddenly.
Individuals become accustomed to the
‘absence or reduced’ sound information
and often ‘adapt’ during the gradual
deterioration of their hearing. The end
result of listening with impaired ears
becomes the norm, when it is not! Often,
those suffering from hearing loss attribute
their inability to hear or understand speech
to ‘too much background noise’ or others
‘mumbling’.
It has been said that the best way to
make a hearing loss obvious is to do
nothing about it. The following behaviours
are common among hearing loss
sufferers.
■ Frequent requests for repetition.
■ Complaints about others ‘mumbling’.
■ Listening to TV or Radio at very high
volume.
■ Difficulty with telephone.
■ Frequent inappropriate conversational
responses.
■ Denial of hearing loss and unwillingness
to be medically tested.
■ Domination of discussions.
If you suspect you or a loved one may
have impaired hearing, consult a qualified
hearing care professional .
How to Evaluate What Hearing Aid
is Right for You
Recent technological advances have been
made which have improved the experience
of living with hearing instruments for many
hard of hearing people. There is a wide
range of technology available to help people
cope with hearing loss, and products grow
in sophistication every year. The right
hearing instrument style and size for you
depends on several factors, including:
■ Degree of hearing loss
■ Listening requirements
■ Ear shape and size
■ Ability to handle instrument and controls
■ Lifestyle needs
continued from page 6
There are four main categories of
hearing instruments:
Completely-in-the-canal (CIC)
CIC are custom made so that all
components fit inside the shell, but they
are worn deeper in the ear canal than
in-the-ear hearing aids (ITE’s) which are
described in the following category and
are almost invisible. Less amplification
is required from CIC than other types
of hearing instruments because output
is delivered close to the eardrum. ClC
reduces the awareness wearers have
of their own voice and their ears do not
feel as “plugged up” as with other types
of instruments. The technical term for
this benefit is “reduced occlusion effect”.
Wind-noise and telephones pose fewer
problems to wearers of CIC compared to
the other types of instruments as well.
In-the-ear (ITE) In-the ear hearing
aids (ITE) became available in the late
1970’s and are now the most popular style
of hearing instrument in North America.
Consumers are attracted to the discreet
styling of ITE which come in several
sizes including full shell (large) to half
shell (small). All the instruments electrical
components are housed within the custommade
shell which is worn inserted in the
ear. The microphone is located in a more
natural position on ITE than on BTE and
some people find that this provides better
sound quality.
In-the-Canal (ITC) In-the-canal (ITC)
hearing aids are smaller and are custom
made to fit the shape of your ear canal.
These aids can be worn during most
physical activity. They also fit more deeply
than ITE hearing aids and therefore are
8 | E x p e r i e n c e

popular because of their cosmetic appeal.
All of the components within the single
plastic shell fit into the ear.
Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Behind-the
ear (BTE) were the most common hearing
instruments in North America from the
1950’s-1970’s, and they continue to outsell
all other hearing instruments world-wide.
BTE aids are reliable and offer fitting
flexibility in addition to power. These
instruments sit behind the ear and amplify
incoming sound. The amplified sound
travels down a short tube connected to
a custom-fitted earmold that delivers the
sound into the ear canal, towards the
eardrum.
and they are small-sized. The sound tube
between the instrument and the earpiece
is very thin and transparent. Micro BTEs
are discreet and almost invisible.
Receiver-In-The-Ear (RITE) This
is an elegant, invisible, anatomic and
discreet Behind-The-Ear solution. The
speaker unit is sitting right in your ear
canal and provides very clear and natural
sound.
Each hearing instrument style can be
made with different levels of technology.
Ask your hearing care professional for the
style and technology that would be best
for you
Financial planning
across the generations
The gap between wants and needs
In many cases,
Baby Boomers
not only have to
plan for their own
financial future
but also that of
their parents.
Not all Baby Boomers are going to
inherit money from their parents, many
will have to assist their parents both
financially and personally.
However, there is a distinct gap between
the level of assistance that aging
parents of adult children want and what
they really need.
A recent survey conducted by Torontobased
Bayshore Home Health showed;
■ Almost 25% of adult children didn’t
know their parent’s annual income.
73% of aging
parents felt they
didn’t need help
around the home,
only 43% of their
adult children
agreed.
■ 25% of adult children thought that
their aging parents would be asking
for financial assistance but only 5% of
the parents planned to ask.
Clearly there is a disconnect between
what level of financial assistance the
aging parents think they need and what
their adult children think they need.
This can be attributed to a lack of
communication which exists due to the
nature of the topic. Many parents of
Baby Boomers feel that discussing their
personal finances is taboo.
Be kind to your
eyes !
Turn on the lights. Seeing better can
sometimes be as easy as changing a
light bulb! Putting 100 or 150-watt bulbs
in your lamps can reduce eye strain
(but make sure your fixture is designed
for that wattage!). Brighter lighting in
stairways can help prevent falls.
Don’t smoke. Studies show that
tobacco smoking is an important risk
factor in the early onset of an eye
disease called age-related macular
degeneration (AMD). This disease
causes serious and permanent loss of
central vision.
Reduce glare. There are many
ways of reducing glare, including good
lampshades, glare shields on computer
monitors, and sunglasses. Wear
sunglasses that provide 99 to 100% UV-A
and UV-B protection when you go outside
during the day. They will protect you from
UV rays that can harm your eyes even on
a cloudy day.
Protect yourself. Many people suffer
vision loss because of accidents in the
home.
Here are some ways to prevent damage
to your eyes:
- put a grease shield over frying foods
- make sure that spray cans and bottle
nozzles are pointed away from you
- wear safety glasses in the workshop
and when opening and using
chemical products.
- when using bungee cords, be careful
of recoil
Eat your carrots. Studies show that
a daily dose of the vitamins and minerals
found in melons, citrus, carrots, spinach
and kale may help slow the progress of
age-related eye diseases such as macular
degeneration, glaucoma or cataracts.
Get an eye examination. Many
changes to vision happen so slowly
that you may not realize you have a
problem. The Canadian Association of
Optometrists recommends adults 20 –
64 be examined every one to two years
and then annually for those 65 and older.
Finding problems early may make the
difference between maintaining good
vision and vision loss
Your eyes deserve an optometrist!
Exercise Key For
Healthy Aging
It’s Never Too Late To Start!
by Paul Girard, PT
What Our Elderly Want
It’s interesting to ponder what our society’s
elderly want. Many authors and articles
will purport to know this. One tends to
reach the same conclusion Dr. John Sloan
came up with when treating what he
termed the ‘fragile elderly.’ In his fantastic
book, A Bitter Pill, Dr. Sloan reflected on
a career of dealing with very elderly and
sick clients. He came up with the amazing
answer to what these patients want: “A
lot of different things.” He wasn’t trying to
be facetious; he was telling the truth. Dr.
Sloan’s findings generalize to the entire
population of almost any segment of
society: What Canadian seniors want is a
lot of different things. The better question,
perhaps, is how are our elderly citizens
going to achieve all the different things
they value in life How are our elderly
going to get what they want
14 | E x p e r i e n c e

Demographics Meets Revenues
The elderly in our society are at a
crossroads in history. Their numbers
are growing and the writing is on the
wall when we look at what kind of future
government resources will be available
to help. The demographic tidal wave
has arrived. Clearly, in order to achieve
their goals and get what they want, our
elderly citizens are going to have to rely
less on government resources. One
way or another, elderly citizens will be
financing more of their needs on their
own. Logically, it will be in an elderly
person’s best interest to minimize their
expenditures on items unrelated to their
personal goals. One such item is health
care. Paramount to avoiding costs of
poor health will be maintaining good
health. Whatever it is that seniors want,
they are much more likely to achieve it
by staying healthy and at home.
The Secret To Our Elderly Improving
Their Odds
So, what is the latest on staying healthy
and at home Plain and simple:
regular physical activity. This translates
to better overall health and improved
ability to function independently and
safely at home as we age. And, there
is good news for those individuals
who have not been physically active
or have lived a relatively sedentary
lifestyle – it is never too late to start.
Health related improvements have
been shown in elderly individuals who
did not begin to exercise regularly until
late in life. In fact, the late starters did
better than those individuals who were
active only in younger years and then
stopped exercising completely. The
key is that it has to be regular exercise,
not that once a month walk around the
mall with your best friend in search of
S o u t h O k a n a g a n S i m i l k a m e e n | 15

that really great bargain! The benefits
of exercise for older adults are well
understood: lowered blood pressure,
better controlled diabetes, improved
cholesterol profile, improved strength
and bone density, better balance and
decreased fall risk. Importantly, it has
been shown that regular exercise can
also improve cognitive functioning –
with improvements seen in areas of the
brain that perform “executive functions”
or tasks related to planning, decision
making and working memory. This
is worth repeating, since epidemic
dementia is foreseen with the growing
elderly population: regular exercise
benefits brain function.
Now comes the hard part – getting
started and sticking with it. Human
nature being what it is, there will be
many excuses or perceived barriers
regarding regular exercise. Truth be
told – all barriers can be overcome one
way or another. First and foremost it is
important to be honest. If you have led
a sedentary lifestyle, or are returning to
exercise after a long period of inactivity,
start gradually and set realistic goals.
Walking one block to the corner store
to buy the newspaper 3 times a week
might be a good start for someone,
whereas another individual may start
at walking community trails 20 minutes
a day 4 or 5 times a week. Since it
is accessible to everyone, walking is
a good start. Some suggestions for
getting walking regularly include scoping
out the local mall before the shops open,
attending a local community centre, or
joining the many walking groups that
spring up in communities all over the
province. It is a great way to exercise
and socialize, while at the same time
improving endurance, strength and bone
density.
The sky is the limit with regard to the
kinds of exercise available to individuals.
Finding something that is enjoyable will
ensure that it is performed regularly.
Look in the local newspaper for listings
of local exercise classes or activities that
are appealing. Local seniors’ centres
hold exercise classes from yoga to line
dancing to lawn bowling and everything
in between. Seniors’ apartments and
living facilities often have activity and
group exercise classes. There are all
kinds of DVDs available at the library for
chair exercise or other exercise classes
that can be followed along at home.
Begin with a friend, family member or
spouse. It’s easier to stick to a program
when you have support. The bottom
line is that regular exercise is essential
for healthy aging, plain and simple. It’s
everyone’s responsibility to reduce
the strain on our healthcare system.
Selfishly, when you reduce your reliance
you’ll likely be spending your time doing
and getting what you want! Do yourself
a favour – start today.
Paul Girard is a registered physiotherapist with extensive
experience in both the Canadian and US healthcare
systems. With his wife, Carmen, he is a franchise partner
with Nurse Next Door Home Health Care Services in the
South Okanagan. Comments or questions – Paul Girard
and/or Carmen Eberle can be reached at (250) 488-8586
or by email penticton@nursenextdoor.com
Tips for beginning and sticking with a regular exercise program:
• Be honest with regard to your present level of fitness – consult with a physiotherapist
to get a better idea of a good starting program.
• Start slowly and progress gradually
• Set goals, but keep them realistic to ensure success.
• Exercise with a friend, family member or spouse to ensure compliance.
• Keep it fun – find activities that you enjoy so it isn’t a chore.
• Look in the community for local walking groups, exercise classes or activities
to keep costs down.
• Pick a time that works with your routine. If you haven’t been an early bird for
70 years, you probably are not going to like a 6:00 am yoga class
• Remember the extra benefits – keeping in shape with regular exercise gives
you a much better chance of getting what you want out of life – whatever that
may be!
So, if you are a Baby Boomer with
aging parents or if you are a parent
with Baby Boomer children, you
need to start having dialogue about
financial assistance and planning.
By planning early you can take
advantage of many opportunities. and
avoid some missed ones.
Start talking and open up that
communication line. To get you going,
here are a few examples of some of
the areas that should be discussed:
■ Health – specifically care options if
health deteriorates
■ Life insurance – potential for children
to assume existing policies
■ Personal balance sheet showing all
assets and liabilities
■ Income requirements – considering all
sources of income
■ Property tax deferral to free up
additional income
■ Tax reduction strategies
The earlier these discussions can start
the better; a financial advisor is a good
resource to use as a third party and
facilitator of these discussions
■ Estate Planning – wills, power of
attorney
Seniors
Symposium
“Enhancing the Quality of Life”
Mark your Calendars: October 20th, 2010
9:00am-4:00pm
This is the 19th year for the Seniors Symposium event at the Penticton
Trade & Convention Centre. This wonderful event attracts
5,000 seniors and caregivers. The Seniors Symposium is an educational
venue for seniors, their families, caregivers who assist
seniors and educational researchers. It was established to provide
educational information to the general public on latest research
and products and services for older adults. This is accomplished by
100 or more exhibitors and speakers in adjoining conference
rooms. The Symposium growth area is to focus more on research,
preventative care and treatments for specific theme areas relating
to seniors health and to attract partners and sponsors for these
areas. In addition to attending educational speaker presentations
and visiting exhibitor booths, a number of local seniors’ musical
performances and artistic displays are held. In the past these
included performances by the fiddlers, belly dancers, and displays
by the bonsai, quilting and model boat clubs.
This year we are honoured to have Susan Eng, a Seniors’ advocacy
expert from CARP National Advocacy. Susan Eng is the Vice
President of Advocacy for CARP, which is the national, non-partisan,
non-profit organization committed to advocating for social change
to bring financial security, equitable access to health care and
freedom from discrimination for all aging Canadians.
Also speaking will be Geoff White, BC Elders Advocate and
CARP Okanagan Board Advisories member. Geoffrey W.
White LC is a law firm in Kelowna specializing in various
areas of law including estate and charity law. Geoff takes a
leadership role in elder law studies in British Columbia
volunteering as a director of BC’s only Elder Law Clinic. Mr.
White is an executive member of the Canadian Bar
Association’s Elder Law Section and is currently assisting in the
design of a lawyer education program for BC’s new Wills, Estate
and Succession Act. Both speakers will provide valuable advice
for seniors at a free workshop being held in conjunction with
the Seniors Symposium.
Don’t forget to mark down October 19th, 2011 for next year’s
Seniors Symposium. You don’t want to miss this great event.
sponsorship or to book your booth, contact Tracy St. Claire or
A message from BC Seniors Living Association ...
Finding the best in seniors living...
SEAL OF APPROVAL PROGRAM SETS
STANDARD FOR RETIREMENT LIVING
Currently, thousands of Canadian
seniors choose to live in independent
or supportive communities
because they offer another lifestyle
option. The attraction to seniors of
this type of living includes:
• Comfort, convenience, and
flexibility
• Safety and security
• Social, spiritual, and
recreational engagement
• Healthier eating with flexible
meal plans and self‐catering
options
• Access to care services and
assistance with activities of
daily living
• Peace of mind for both the
senior and their family
The resulting benefits for seniors
are that they are able to remain
independent, engaged, and vital
much longer. Their physical health
often remains stronger due to
healthier eating and an active
lifestyle. They maintain better
cognitive skills through social
interaction and mental stimulus.
When looking for a retirement community for yourself
or your loved ones, look for the Seal of Approval
Both lead to increased quality and
longevity of life.
BCSLA is committed to working on
behalf of its members and seniors to
illuminate the value of this lifestyle
option. In February 2010, BCSLA
was proud to announce and
implement its new Seal of
Approval Program*.
To obtain the BCSLA Seal of
Approval, the senior community
must complete both an internal selfassessment
and an independent
external review. Successful
communities meet multiple criteria
in five areas: safety measures,
infection control, staff training,
resident services, and assisted
living supports.
“This comprehensive review
ensures communities with the Seal
of Approval provide seniors with
the best quality of service and
care,” Amir Hemani, BCSLA
President, said. “We know seniors
and their families will value this
independent assessment that will
help them to provide confidence of
choice for the best community to
meet their needs.”
Hemani said BCSLA members support
the Seal of Approval as a way
to publicly demonstrate their
excellent service, professional
integrity, and industry leadership.
Seal of Approval residences will
give today’s seniors and future
seniors the best in retirement living
and is expected to raise standards
throughout the industry.
*The BC Seniors Living Association Seal of
Approval Program was originally developed
by the Ontario Retirement Communities
Association (ORCA) and amended by the
BCSLA to match the needs of BC seniors.
2011 Hyundai So
• 2011 Hyundai Sonata represents the lowest depreciation in the midsize car segment
in ALG Residual Value Index and even outperforms comparably-equipped 2010
model year Honda Accord
• 2011 Hyundai Sonata Named IIHS Top Safety Pick
nata
Now at Penticton Hyundai
The midsize sedan where style
and luxury converge
For 2011the Sonata has undergone what can only be described
as a re-envisioning. Taken to a new level of style, luxury and
refinement, the all-new Sonata will undoubtedly be the sedan
against which others in its class will be measured.
The highlights of this thoroughly outstanding sedan include
its eye-catching Fluidic Sculpture design – which gives the
impression of motion, even while at rest – and its luxuriously
appointed interior.
Propelling the 6 speed automatic Sonata is a powerful and
efficient Theta II 200 hp 2.4L 4-cylinder GDI engine. GDI –
Gasoline Direct-Injection – is a fuel delivery system that results
in improved efficiency (50 mpg) while delivering increased
horsepower.
Sonata continues Hyundai’s value tradition with an impressive
list of standard features that are costly options on many other
cars: air conditioning, power windows and door locks, tilt-andtelescoping
steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted cruise
control and an AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six
speakers.
The 2011 Sonata is a smart combination of superior styling,
performance, safety and fuel efficiency. What’s more, it’s an
affordable midsize car, putting a luxurious and rewarding
driving experience within reach of many. Make the 2011
Sonata a part of your future.
The Aging Driver
Driving in the Senior Years
by Sean Wells, DriveWise Canada
A common myth among many is
when you become a senior, you are a
bad driver. In fact, many older, more
experienced drivers remain safe on
our roads. The issue is that as we
age, our bodies both physically and
mentally begin to change as we grow
older. This may affect the way we
drive.
Many decisions must be made
for every minute of driving. Each
decision requires an almost
immediate response. Today’s roads
are much busier than they were 60
years ago. We are not just watching
out for other cars anymore, but more
road users such as pedestrians,
cyclists, motorbikes and motorized
scooters to name just a few.
Older drivers take longer to respond
to important decisions and might
have to deal with weaker muscles,
limited range of motion and a
reduction in flexibility. This can
interfere with their ability to be aware
of their driving environment which is
360 degrees around a vehicle.
Tips for the aging driver:
• See your doctor and vision
specialist at least once per year
• Don’t drive if feeling ill or tired
• If necessary, bring along a
passenger to help you navigate
• Watch the traffic ahead of you and
use at least the two second rule
when following other vehicles.
This gives you more space to
respond to potential hazards.
• Talk to your family about your
driving. If necessary, seek a
specialist to help your family
determine if you are safe on the
roads.
• Take a driving evaluation BEFORE
you retest for your licence.
Many senior drivers will be sent a
letter ordering them to re-test their
driving skills with ICBC. This can be
a stressful time. Make sure you are
prepared ahead of time. The road test
is very difficult – We are here to help
you!
training programs. www.drivewisebc.com
