Senior Housing
There are many senior housing options that range from the very
independent of seniors apartments to full time care provided by nursing
homes. Understanding the following terms will help you better grasp
the different housing options for senior citizens.
Independent Living
Independent residential
communities are for seniors
desiring a leisurely,
hassle-free lifestyle.
Choices include active
retirement communities,
apartments, condos, or
garden homes offering
some extra services and
features that many senior
citizens would especially
enjoy or find helpful.
Beyond home maintenance,
some services
available might include
social programs for seniors,
transportation services, organized
outings, shopping trips and sometimes
limited medical services.
Senior friendly
features might
include emergency
pull cords within
the home, first floor
access or elevators
that are senior
citizens friendly.
Community features
may also include
meals, housekeeping
and laundry.
Some retirement
communities
partner with outside
senior service
providers such as
home health care
agencies to increase the senior services
available on their campus.
Assisted Living
Assisted Living communities are designed
for senior citizens who need help
with daily living activities but do not require
nursing home care. Typically they
provide help with meals, bathing, dressing,
housekeeping, and other needs. Senior
services are either included in the
rent or provided at an extra charge.
Continuing Care Retirement
Community (CCRC)
Many retirement communities offer more
than one level of care. There are some
senior housing options that offer a comprehensive
continuum of care. You may
enter at any care level but often seniors
move to one of these communities to
enjoy an independent, active lifestyle.
Should the need arise for assistance
with living, Alzheimer’s care, rehabilitation
or even skilled nursing on a temporary
or long-term basis; those needs can
be met within the same
community. Choosing a retirement community
that offers a continuum of care
can be a good choice for couples whose
needs may vary.
Respite Care
Respite Care communities offer temporary
or short term care solutions for senior
citizens. This service is intended to
give caregivers or adult children a well
deserved break from their daily responsibilities
of caring for an older adult. The
length of a respite stay can vary from 2
days up to more than a full month.
Memory Care
(Alzheimer’s and Dementia)
Memory care facilities offer specialized
programs for seniors suffering from
Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia or other
Home Nursing and Foot Care
Nursing Care for
Seniors
Nursing homes are
for seniors in need of
24-hour nursing care.
They provide many of
the same care options
offered in other senior
retirement communities
such as housing, meals, personal
care, protection, supervision and other
types of therapy. Typically nursing care
falls into three levels of care:
• Basic Care - Required to maintain a
person’s activity of daily living
• Skilled Care -
Requires the
services of a
registered nurse
for treatment and
procedures
• Sub-Acute Care -
Requires comprehensive
in-patient
care for someone
who has experienced
an acute
illness or injury.
The Sandwich
Generation
Many Boomers are finding themselves
sandwiched between teenaged children
and aging parents. Along with careers
and everyday living, family caregiving
can be both stressful and demanding.
It requires learning new skills, educating
your-self about a variety of physical
and mental conditions and locating
the services and resources needed to
address them. Whether you are the
caregiver, are overseeing a qualified
home health care professional, or
are monitoring caregiving services in a
nursing home or housing community,
balancing the needs of your loved one
with family and work responsibilities
requires planning, flexibility, patience
and love.
Experience Publishing hopes to make
your job easier by providing the best
resources for you and your family.
Signs someone You Love
May Need Help
Discussing health and safety concerns
is an important beginning to finding
services and support needed to maintain
or nurture independence. The signs
below may indicate safety or health
issues that need to be addressed by a
social worker or physician:
Unexplained weight loss, poor
appetite, Depression, hearing or
vision problems.
neglected housework or repairs,
improper use of appliances,
Mobility issues such as walking and
about the option of aging in place or
Plan for their care should changes in
their health occur and decisions need to
Who Says Seniors
Don’t Have Time For
Health
senior health and
overall senior fitness.
Fit Seniors Are
Smart Seniors,
Literally!
When seniors
exercise, their
workout a positive
effect on muscles,
joints, and bones. But the amazing news
is that exercise for seniors provides far
more than just physical fitness. Literally
providing a workout for the brain as well
as the body, exercise supports senior
health by improving blood flow and
increasing metabolism. Overall
brain function is also improved thanks
to better circulation. This can bring a
dramatic improvement to a senior’s
metal acuity and memory function.
Seniors who workout regularly, report
that their exercise
program leaves them
feeling positive and
happy, with a positive
attitude that carries
over into non-workout
hours.
Feel The Burn
and Set Calories
On Fire
Seniors need to be aware of weight
and its relationship to fitness. As the
body ages, it becomes more difficult
for seniors to maintain an ideal weight
without a fitness program, regular
workouts and exercise. If you can
BOOST YOUR METABOLISM, your
body will be able to burn more calories
per day. The good news for senior
fitness is that exercise naturally boosts
your metabolism. Your fitness level
will get a real boost if you add weight
Senior health is a popular topic these
days as aging baby boomers try to figure
out the best ways to keep enjoying their
goldenyears… which happily are lasting
longer and longer in the 21st Century.
Senior fitness is also an important issue
as technology and labor-saving devices
have created a landscape where ‘hard
work’ is diminished… but so are the
long-term health benefits that come
from leading an active life. And senior
health is also a key to a healthy mind.
Numerous studies point to a strong
connection between regular exercise
and emotional stability, providing
strong evidence that many seniors
can literally exercise away their
depression.
For optimum senior health, the ABC’s
of older fitness are actually ESC –
Endurance, Strength and Cardio. These
three forms of exercise target different
senior health needs and should all be
integrated into your workout program.
Endurance exercise increases blood
flow and may protect older people
from cardiac injury during a heart
attack, according to a new University
of Florida study. Strength exercises
increase muscle mass and improve
metabolism which aids in maintaining
a healthy weight…a key challenge in
senior health. Workouts that target the
cardiovascular system promote heart
health. Add stretching and balance
exercises for a complete approach to
16 | E x p e r i e n c e A b b o t s f o r d | 17

training or progressive resistance
exercise that builds muscle to your
workout. Muscle burns more calories
than fat, and the more muscle you have,
the more calories you burn, even when
you’re resting.
Senior Exercise Prevents
Embarrassing Senior
Conditions
One of the ‘secret’ benefits seniors
enjoy from exercise is freedom from
worry. Exercise strengthens muscles
that hold the body’s organs in place
to prevent many of the conditions that
keep seniors from enjoying their lives
fully. The positive effect on the muscles
that hold the bladder is the reason many
older fitness enthusiasts have found
that keeping to a
regular workout
helps them put
off some of the
most common
(and potentially
embarrassing)
signs of aging
including urinary
tract problems.
Simple pelvic
exercises
performed for
a few minutes
a day several
times a week can improve senior health
exponentially.
The Secret of Success
There’s no ‘magic bullet’ that guarantees
senior health and fitness. There’s not even
a ‘magic’ workout or exercise. If there’s
any ‘magic’ in senior fitness, it’s a magic
word. That word is COMMITMENT. For
any exercise program or fitness regimen
to work, you need to follow it regularly…
for life. A great way to stay motivated is
to KEEP A DAILY EXERCISE JOURNAL.
Record the kind of exercise you did that
day, your heart rate, and anything else
that’s meaningful to you. You’ll feel great
when you review the progress you’ve
made in creating a lifetime of good health
for yourself ■
cont. from p14
families need. This
extra is known as
social capital, the
amount that you
can return to your
community. Some of
us are fortunate to
identify these funds
during our lifetimes.
For others, this
discretionary capital
only becomes
available in their
estate.
A recent Ipsos-Reid
survey indicates
that 8% of British
Columbian’s give
approximately
$8,000 to charity in
their wills.
If this is an amount you think you could
afford, it’s easy to do. Let me show
you how Gifting falls into two general
categories: gifting during lifetime, and
gifting at death.
Gifting during lifetime
During lifetime, we make annual
contributions to door-to-door
canvassers, our church, the United
Way. We may also make an occasional
larger gift to a specific
charity, such as
Semiahmoo House
Society, to assist with
a capital campaign
to raise funds for a
building or equipment
for example.
Gifting at death.
The other category
is estate gifting,
sometimes known
as deferred or
planned giving. An
estate gift must be
in writing, either in
your will or directly
designated in the
RRSP/RRIF contract,
or insurance policy.
Both the amount and
the charity must be
identifiable.
Identify the amount.
Some choose a dollar
amount, others a percentage of their
estate. Because the value of our assets
is constantly changing, a percentage is
perhaps safer in that it won’t get out of
balance with the amount going to heirs.
Identify the charity. Consider the charity
as another child and create one extra
share to be distributed on your death.
Or simply designate 10% of the residue
of your estate to charity. How does that
work Let’s say you have four children.
Would each of them miss 2½ % of
their inheritance Likely not, especially
knowing that over 40% of the gift could
have been lost to taxes anyway.
Endow your annual gifts. If you already
give $10,000 annually to your church,
your estate plan should consider leaving
$250,000 to the church when you die
so that your annual legacy can continue
Reduce your estate taxes.
year after year. The church could invest
this bequest at 4% to generate $10,000
every year thereafter. If you don’t have
the cash in your estate, buy it Use life
insurance to fund your estate gift. That
way, the only cost to you is the annual
premium. Better yet, use the tax credit
from your annual giving to pay the
premiums on life insurance to create the
estate gift.
An estate gift is also an effective way to eliminate taxes on your estate. By
planning the size, type and timing of the gift, your estate will be able to apply the
charitable tax credit to tax due on your terminal tax return and the year prior.
Have you been touched by a kindness Good fortune Good health Did you
receive a scholarship Would your life have been different if you had Have you
been helped by a stranger
People give because they can. If you want to be one of those people, go ahead!
You are. Extend a kindness. It feels great ■
Remember
Me
Who knows your life story better than
you
No one! Your life is a collection of
experiences and memories that make
you unique.Planning your memorial in
advance gives you time to ponder your
most significant milestones, activities and
achievements. Time to think about what
brought the most joy and meaning to your
life. And time to think about how you want to
be remembered.
Your memorial speaks best when you guide
the choices for wording and design, creating
your own message for future generations.
your family will appreciate your guidance
in the creation of your memorial.
Later, when you are gone, your family
will have enough to cope with without
worrying about what memorial would be
right and what should be put on it. They
will appreciate your invitation to join with
you in recalling and celebrating the things
that meant the most to you and deciding
how best to capture those things, forever
etched in stone.
Purchasing ahead gives
a person, or family,
the advantage
of purchasing
a suitable
monument at
the current
price
rather
than waiting
until the future
with the uncertainty
of tomorrow’s inflation ■
Planning Ahead
Dave Reeson
( President of Remco Memorials Ltd.)
“Affordable & Convenient”
Abbotsford’s ONLY crematorium and Independently owned
& operated Funeral Service Providers
The idea of memorialization is not new, in
fact, it’s been around for centuries. Now a
new concept in memorialization is gaining
favor and with good reason.
More and more people are adopting the
attitude that a memorial or monument is
just like many other things that they can
plan for during their lifetime, such as estate
planning, life insurance, a retirement fund
or funeral arrangements.
Planning your own memorial has many
advantages.
It’s an opportunity to work with your loved
ones to tell your story, and to choose
from a wide variety of memorialization
options available today. Planning ahead
can save you family the stress of making
decisions during an already difficult time.
And there are also financial considerations
– by planning ahead you can purchase
your memorial at current prices and take
advantage of financial options.
You may be surprised to learn that the first thing
most people say, when they pre-plan their funeral
arrangements through us, is something like this:
“I’m so relieved! I kept putting this off. It’s one
of the easiest things I’ve ever done.”
Be kind to your
eyes!
WE CARE
FOR YOUR
EYES
50% Off
Any Frame
Turn on the lights. Seeing better can
sometimes be as easy as changing a
light bulb! Putting 100 or 150-watt bulbs
in your lamps can reduce eye strain
(but make sure your fixture is designed
for that wattage!). Brighter lighting in
stairways can help prevent falls.
Don’t smoke. Studies show that
tobacco smoking is an important risk
factor in the early onset of an eye
disease called age-related macular
degeneration (AMD). This disease
causes serious and permanent loss of
central vision.
Reduce glare. There are many
ways of reducing glare, including good
lampshades, glare shields on computer
monitors, and sunglasses. Wear
sunglasses that provide 99 to 100% UV-A
and UV-B protection when you go outside
during the day. They will protect you from
UV rays that can harm your eyes even on
a cloudy day.
Here are some ways to prevent damage
to your eyes:
- put a grease shield over frying foods
- make sure that spray cans and bottle
nozzles are pointed away from you
- wear safety glasses in the workshop
and when opening and using chemical
products like ammonia
- when using bungee cords, be careful
of recoil
Eat your carrots. Studies show that
a daily dose of the vitamins and minerals
found in melons, citrus, carrots, spinach
and kale may help slow the progress of
age-related eye diseases such as macular
degeneration, glaucoma or cataracts.
Get an eye examination. Many
changes to vision happen so slowly that
you may not realize you have a problem.
If you are over 45 years of age, the most
important thing you can do to protect
your vision is to have an eye exam
on a regular basis. Finding problems
early may make the difference between
maintaining good vision and vision loss ■
Safety Tips for the Older Driver
In 2002, one in every eight Canadians
was over the age of 65. Maintaining a
driver’s license is an important issue
of independence for older Canadians,
especially to those who have driven for
most of their life.
On a per-person basis, mature drivers
have less than the average number of
collisions. But on a per-kilometre basis,
the over-70 age group is involved in
a disproportionately high number of
collisions.
The aging process brings changes that
can affect the older driver’s ability to
drive safely. These include: reduced
vision, particularly at night; a decrease
in depth perception; and movementlimiting
disabilities such as arthritis
and rheumatism which slow down
response. The rate of aging varies for
each individual, but it is important to
recognize age-related changes and
learn how to compensate for them.
Vision, Hearing and Medication
■ Have regular vision and hearing
examinations.
■ When traveling, always wear your
eyeglasses or hearing aid.
■ Give yourself time to adjust to new
eyeglasses and have your glasses
checked periodically.
■ Use medication correctly, know how
it could affect your driving and ensure
you are free from harmful effects
before driving. With some medicines,
you may not be able to drive at all.
Driving Tips
■ Always wear your seat-belt.
■ Keep your eyes moving and watch
the entire traffic environment.
■ Look for vehicles entering the
road from curbs, driveways and
businesses.
■ Be alert for parked cars, pedestrians
and cyclists.
■ Use rearview and outside mirrors
often.
■ Check to the side several times
before turning or merging.
■ Never assume you can take the right
of way, even if you know it should be
yours.
■ When unsure whether you should
pass or change lanes, stay in your
lane.
■ Maintain a minimum three second
following distance. Start your count
when the car ahead passes a fixed
road mark.
■ When driving in the rain or in winter,
reduce speed and increase following
distance.
■ Maintain space cushions to the sides
and behind your car ■
You may not need a legal
degree for Murphy’s Law but
you may need us
The older we get, the fewer chances we may take… but that doesn’t always shield us from financial
“surprises.” Do you have a plan to quickly deal with unexpected costs like home or auto repairs,
appliance malfunctions or even medical expenses
We can help before misfortune takes a toll on your personal fortune.
We’ll show you strategies to overcome “surprise” expenses faster and can offer better ways to
manage your daily finances. We work with innovative companies like Manulife Bank of Canada who
have created new alternatives to building your wealth and keeping more of it.
