Not Your Mother’s
Library
By Fern Teleglow
We all know the
stereotype of the public
library as a quiet place where
there is a plain middle-aged woman
with sensible shoes and her hair in a
bun telling people to be quiet. Well if you
haven’t been to the library for a while you
may be surprised to learn that things have
changed!
The Okanagan Regional Library provides
a wide range of services to our users,
whether you come in to borrow books,
DVDs and CDs, or you prefer to stay
home and download eBooks, magazines
and music to your device or computer.
Find us online at www.orl.bc.ca.
Be sure to explore ORL eBooks, our own
collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks
chosen by ORL staff.
For the magazine aficionados, we offer
Zinio for Libraries, which is a service
that provides digital magazines
that you can download to your
computer or other device. Check
out these the current issues of popular
titles like Us Weekly, Maclean’s, and
National Geographic.
The entire Sony music catalogue is
available through freegal Music. ORL
customers can download 3 songs a week
– no charge, and it’s not a loan – they’re
yours to keep. No matter what genre of
music you prefer, you’ll find something
you like. The name, by the way, is a
combination of ‘free’ and ‘legal’.
You can find the links to ORL eBooks,
Zinio for Libraries and freegal Music
all from the ORL home page. You
can also click on the View All Digital
Resources button from the home page
to check out the many other online
services that the ORL offers to its
customers, such as:
Powerspeak Languages. This is a
great resource for all of you worldtravellers
and life-long
learners. It is an online
self-directed language
learning program which
includes lessons in
French, Spanish, Italian,
German, Mandarin,
Japanese, as well as
English as a Second
Language for Spanish
speakers.
OneClickdigital, which
is the ORL’s newest
online service. This
collection features over
4,000 eAudiobooks
that ORL customers can check-out and
download. Quite a lot of the titles in
the collection are always available, so
“
whether you come in to
borrow books, DVDs and
CDs, or you prefer to
stay home and download
”
you won’t have to wait to borrow your
eAudiobook.
Staff at larger branches,
particularly Kelowna and
Vernon, will help you with
your eReader or tablet.
Plus of course, we still
provide all the services
you expect when you
come into your local
branch. Please come in
and check us out!
Starting the
most difficult
conversation
by Benita Baerg
Dying. Let’s be honest, it’s a topic most
of us would rather not think about until
we absolutely have to. But keep reading:
spending a few minutes now thinking about
the end of your life could save you and
your loved ones significant stress, uncertainty,
and pain.
Almost all of us hope – in fact, many of us are
banking – that our lives will culminate with a
‘falling asleep and never waking up’ kind of
end: gentle, quiet, painless, and completely
unexpected. Given that only about 1 in
10 deaths actually happens quickly and
unexpectedly, the odds are stacked pretty
heavily that you – like 9 out of 10 people –
will require end-of-life care and support.
If a health care crisis happens to you, are
you prepared Does your family know
how you’d like to be cared for Have you
designated someone to make health care
decisions on your behalf if you ever are
unable to speak for yourself Making your
end-of-life medical and support wishes
known now, hopefully long before you near
the actual end of your life, will help ensure
your preferences are achieved and your
voice is heard if you ever are unable to
speak for yourself.
You are not alone: free end-of-life
support is just a phone call away.
Desert Valley Hospice strives to make the
journey a little easier and a little better
for anyone with a life limiting illness in
the Oliver and Osoyoos area. Highly
trained DVHS volunteers are available
to offer practical and emotional support
and companionship to individuals nearing
end of life at home, in the hospital or in a
residential care facility. Volunteers may
read to the client, listen to their concerns,
share mutual interests, or run small
errands. Volunteers are also available
for respite support, end of life vigil, and
bereavement support
The Spirit of Summerland…
by Jo Ann Reynolds
Nestled in the beautiful community of
Summerland you’ll find a treasured piece
of the province’s railway history. One of
BC’s few operational steam railways – the
Kettle Valley Steam Railway - operates on
the only preserved section of the historic
Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) built during
1910-1915.
The star attraction at the railway is the
century old steam locomotive – the “3716”
also named Spirit of Summerland. This
gleaming piece of steel pulls the train on
a 90 minute journey through the beauty
of Prairie Valley with its lush orchards,
beckoning vineyards and fields of green.
A trip onto the Trout Creek Bridge (circa
1913) offers breathtaking views of
Okanagan Lake and the canyon below.
Live music, historical commentary and
observation games for kids make regular
tours a memorable experience for the
entire family.
For a railway adventure with the flavour
of the “old west” try the Kettle Valley
Steam Railway’s Great Train Robbery &
BBQ Event – held about every two weeks
during summer and fall. On board you’ll
be entertained with live music, dance hall
girls and “the sheriff”, there to protect you
from the rest of the Garnett Valley Gang
as they ride out of the hills to board the
train and ask you to hand over your spare
change. After the thrill of the robbery you
head back to the station for a delicious
BBQ dinner.
Other special event trains include Easter,
Mother’s Day and the Summerland
Christmas Express. All special event
trains are reservation only. It is also
recommended that you book ahead for
regular tours as well. Experience the
romance of trains and the preservation of
an era at the Kettle Valley Steam Railway
this year! For information on schedule
commonly believed that stroke is an
affliction affecting people who are in their
70’s or older, our clients have varied in
age from 28 years of age and up.
The goal of our education-based stroke
support program is to provide resources
and tools to individuals so that they may
live their lives to their fullest potential.
The small group setting also provides an
opportunity for survivors and caregivers to
share their experiences with others. In this
group environment stroke survivors learn
valuable information about their stroke and
new strategies to improve the quality of
their life.
The stroke support program runs for 9
weeks consecutively (15 hours) covering
issues commonly experienced by stroke
survivors and their caregivers. These
issues include general health and lifestyle
improvements to lower the risk of having
a second stroke, developing a better
understanding of memory and problem
solving, aphasia and other communication
challenges and, ways for caregivers to
take time to care for themselves and avoid
potential ‘burnout’. Topics covered include
‘What is a Stroke’, ‘Transient Ischemic
Attack (TIA)’, ‘Emotional Issues and the
name a few.
Anyone who has had a stroke and still
the Okanagan!
At precisely 2:15pm on Tuesday May 19th,
1914, a giant splash greeted the launch
of the Okanagan’s latest steam-driven
paddle wheeler, the SS Sicamous. A
journalist for The Vernon News reported
“To the tooting of whistles and cheering
of the large crowd...the splendid new
steamer Sicamous slid gracefully into the
water...” This graceful ship represented
a long line of transport vessels that ran
up and down Okanagan Lake since
the 1890s, and for the next 23 years it
connected small communities on the
water to the commercial hubs of Vernon,
Kelowna and Penticton.
Just over a year later on May 31st 1915,
KVR Locomotive #4 and three passenger
cars arrived at Penticton Lakeshore
Station to officially open the newly
completed Kettle Valley Railway. More than
1,500 people were on hand to greet the
start of the age of steam rail travel in the
area, and the connecting of the Okanagan
to the outside world.
Fast forward to 2014 and the age of
steam is being recognised again through
the launch of Steamfest! For 18 months
starting in May 2014, the museums of the
South Okanagan will be hosting a huge
celebration to recognise the impact steam
technology and travel had 100 years
go with the launch of the SS Sicamous
Sternwheeler and the arrival of the Kettle
Valley Railway in 1915.
Steamfest will feature a combination of
fun events, amazing exhibits, musical
performances, awesome machine
demonstrations and sumptuous culinary
celebrations during which time the
character and history of the South
Okanagan is recognised and remembered.
The festival is coordinated through different
heritage groups including the SS Sicamous
Restoration Society, Kettle Valley Steam
Railway, the Penticton Museum & Archives,
the Okanagan Historical Society and the
Summerland Museum.
We want you to get steamed up over
Steamfest! If ever there was moment to get
involved in local history and culture, either
as a volunteer or as a participant, then
2014 and 2015 is the time
The Surprising Benefits of
Learning a Musical Instrument
Diabetic
Healthy
People of all ages and nationalities are
drawn toward the international language of
music. The benefits of learning a musical
instrument (such as the piano, the mother
instrument) are many, and these benefits
extend well into our senior years.
Improve Hearing
A common complaint of older adults
is difficulty hearing speech in noise.
Studies have shown that learning music,
even late in life, can improve the ability
to communicate in complex, noisy
environments, supporting the idea that
the brain can be trained to overcome
some age-related hearing loss. Walter
Hall, 81 years old of Kelowna, stated that
since taking piano lessons he can hear
conversations better while dining at a
restaurant. “You trained my brain to zero
in on what I need to hear!”
Protect Against Memory Loss
Music is like a gym class for the mind,
ody, and emotions
no matter what your
age. Consider your
brain a muscle and
find opportunities
to flex it, such as
starting a new hobby.
A second common
complaint of older
adults is loss of
memory. Senior Alice
Mumm of Peachland
(volunteer) stated
after two months
of taking piano
she can now write
two to three phrases at a time versus
two or three words at a time when she
goes to workshops. “I can listen to what
the speaker is saying and write down my
notes at the same time. I could not do this
before!”
It is believed that the processes involved in
playing a musical instrument may provide
the cognitive exercise the brain needs to
protect itself against memory loss. This has
implications in preventing Alzheimer’s and
dementia as well.
Anti-aging effects
University of Miami findings revealed that
the test group who took group keyboard
lessons showed significantly higher levels
of HgH than the control group of people
who did not make music. Human growth
hormone is a chemical important for overall
good health. It is important in slowing
aging factors such
as osteoporosis,
wrinkles, and
general aches and
pain.
Beat the blues
Music has been
shown not only to
reduce tension and
anxiety but also
to help reduce the
feeling of isolation
and solitude.
Studies show that
having quality
relationships with other people has a direct
effect on the amount of loneliness we
feel. Trying new things can provide a new
common ground on which to meet other
people.
Many More benefits
Reduce stress, express yourself creatively,
be able to play Happy Birthday or carols at
family gatherings, develop confidence, gain
pride, and enjoy a sense of achievement.
If you want to have fun, exercise your
brain, and meet people with similar
interests, why not play the piano for
your brain. It is a lot more fun than
Sudoku!
Play Golf – Live Longer
By: Gayle Moss
Beginner: Includes
lessons, mentoring, tee
times at women-friendly
courses and seminars
Social: For recreational
players who play for fun and
friendship
Did you know that there is a 5-year increase
in life expectancy for golfers as compared
to other people of the same sex, age and
socioeconomic status It’s true! According
to the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine 1 ,
golf is not only a game for life; it is a life saver.
So, what should women over 50 do Get
Out and Live Fully – i.e. GOLF!
In Canada, only 30% of golfers are female,
and while that statistic is disappointing, it has
not discouraged Diane Fru, of Golf Fore Gals
(GFG), who is determined to grow women’s
golf in BC, especially for women over the
age of 50.
Golf Fore Gals is a multi-course golf
club which offers women of all ages and
skill levels a fun, safe and welcoming
environment to:
• Enjoy the fresh outdoors and discover the
joys of golf
• Build lifelong friendships
• Get more exercise and have more fun
• Improve their game
GFG offers 3 levels of membership:
Handicap/Golf Canada:
Tailored for more serious
golf gals who maintain
a Golf Canada Handicap
Today over 70% of GFG members are over
50. They enjoy the camaraderie of playing
together at more than 60 of BC’s best golf
courses, including 15 from the Okanagan
such as: Two Eagles, The Pinnacle at
Gallagher’s Canyon, Shannon Lake and
Penticton Golf & Country Club, to name just
a few.
Women who join Golf Fore Gals have
reciprocal membership privileges in ALL
chapters, including Maui in the fall.
“Through GFG I have met the best friends
a woman could wish for. We are there for
each other through family births and deaths;
marriages and divorces; cancer and illness;
injuries and surgeries; job loss; bucket list
adventures; world travel. These women are
my support system, my sisters in joy and
sorrow. I am forever grateful to Golf Fore
Gals for what it has brought to my life.”
Johanna, 8 year GFG member
Reading Program Volunteers
Help Struggling Students Close the Gap
Struggling readers in the South
Okanagan and Similkameen are
getting help from One To One,
a children’s literacy program
with a proven record in making a
difference. The program is currently
seeking volunteer tutors to assist
students in schools throughout the
area.
“We have an amazing team of
dedicated volunteer tutors,” says
the Literacy Now South Okanagan-
Similkameen program’s district
coordinator, Joan Chambers. “We
have retired teachers and education
specialists, empty nesters who
simply love reading, stay-home
parents, and seasonal employees.”
Tutors commit to coming once a week for 90
minutes, for a period of 12 weeks. Each tutor
reads one-to-one for half an hour each, with
three different students.
We provide a free three-hour training
session, and any other support the tutors
need to help them make a difference.
“Over the twelve weeks, there is usually
significant improvement in the child’s
reading,” says Chambers. “Our goal is to get
them caught up with their peers as soon as
possible, so they won’t fall behind in their
learning. The tutors often tell us the time
spent with the kids is one of the most
gratifying things they do. ”
“Some kids grow up in homes where they
don’t see someone reading a book just for
pleasure. Others have been frustrated or
embarrassed at some point, so they avoid
reading instead of practicing and improving,
which means they fall further behind.” The
extra practice with the volunteers helps
close that gap
The twelve week sessions begin in most area
schools in October and February. If you can help
please contact Joan at 250-462-0636 or email
literacynowsos@gmail.com for more information.
Literacy is the Velcro skill that
makes other learning stick.
When we don’t use our literacy skills,
we lose them.
Read, do word and math puzzles,
sing, play a game or a musical
instrument, talk and socialize.
We need volunteers to read with children at local
elementary schools. Do you have 90 minutes a week
to inspire a child to develop a love of reading
Please call us.
Is a Custom
Knee Brace
for me
Two of the main kinds of custom knee
braces are:
1. Functional knee braces. These give
support to knees that have already been
injured or compromised. Ligamentous injury
from a fall, accident or sport. OsteoArthritic
bracing due to medial or lateral OseteoArthritis
of the knee. Often used to prevent or postpone
knee replacement surgery.
2. Prophylactic knee braces. These are
designed to protect knees from injuries
during sports like football, hockey, skiing or
motocross racing.
In general, functional and prophylactic knee
braces are the most effective. Braces help
some people more than others. Some people
are afraid that using a knee brace will make
their knee weaker. This is NOT the case, in
our experience patients wearing a custom
made knee brace generally find the brace
offers them enough support and pain reduction
in their knee they are able to become more
active again, effectively strengthening the
knee with the added exercise. Think of a knee
brace more as “body armour” for the knee and
not as a “crutch” for it to rely on.
Most doctors, therapists and Orthotists would
agree that it is always worth trying a more
conservative, non-invasive pain management
option prior to considering surgical repair.
It is often found that proper use of a knee
brace will slow the rate of Osteo Arthrtic
change in a knee, and is also likely to postpone
or eliminate the need of a total knee
replacement.
Most extended medical plans, Ministry of
Social Development and Disability, NIHB,
WCB, ICBC, and Veterans Affairs will help
cover the costs of these braces.
A Certified Orthotist is a medical professional
who has been trained to assess the
body mechanics as a whole and take the
information gained from that assessment
and implement it in their Orthotic designs to
best suit each patients individual needs. A
Certified Orthotist specialises in Orthopedic
bracing from head to toe
Pickleball
Is Here To Play
Jack Byron still
remembers the
first time he played
pickleball at the
Penticton Community
Centre, “I couldn’t
believe how much fun I
had with a racquet and
plastic ball.” And at
the end of the session
he was surprised how
much of a workout it
was, too.
But when Jack, a
retired school teacher,
started playing eight years ago few knew
about the game. “We had only 6-8 players.
When I told people I played pickleball they
had no idea what I was talking about.”
• Full gym facility including group fitness classes and pool
• We can create the program that will compliment and improve your lifestyle
The Penticton Community Centre now has
over 200 regular players and daily drop-in
sessions thanks to encouraging, supportive
and enthusiastic players like Jack.
Jack is quick to add that pickleball is easy
for anyone to learn. “The first time you
come to pickleball we’ll show you how to
rally the ball over the net. After ten minutes
of that you’re ready to play.”
Pickleball is played on a court similar in
size to a doubles badminton court with a
tennis-like-net but hung two inches lower.
Players use a hard paddle and wiffle ball.
It looks a lot like tennis but there are
important differences. A wiffle ball travels
more slowly than a tennis ball so with the
smaller court it is an easier game to play.
And because pickleball can be played in
gymnasiums, it is played year round.
“What I like most with our group,” says
Jack, “Is that they really get along.
We have some players who are really
exceptional athletes and some that have
Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease. We
accommodate all levels of play.”
Pickleballs are provided and the Penticton
Community Centre offers some starter
paddles on loan at no cost for beginners.
The 2014 Subaru Forester is
the only small SUV to receive
the top rating (“G/Good”) in
every safety test issued by the
IIHS, granting it the TSP+ (Top
Safety Pick Plus) designation.
These tests include the most
severe frontal collision tests
performed on vehicles. But we
believe the best way to
protect yourself in a collision
is to avoid one altogether;
that’s why every Forester is
equipped with symmetrical
full-time All-Wheel Drive for
added traction and control,
and the option of our
EyeSight Advanced Driving
Assist System. So thanks to us,
a few lucky crash test
dummies have a very long life
ahead of them. subaru.ca
2014
Ratings of “Good” are the highest rating awarded for performance in five safety tests (moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, rollover and rear) conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety (IIHS) (www.iihs.org). To earn a 2013 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must receive a “Good” rating in at least four of the five tests and a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the fifth test.
The officer then asks, “really
