Editorial
Race Walking is yet again getting busier and busier. With more races being held, new
people trying the sport, performances improving all over and many new developments in
progress, the sport will soon be facing different challenges to the ones we have long worried
about. With the Olympics coming up and a constantly increasing profile in the media, we
can only become busier and more popular, and more people will be needed.
Many people give a lot of their time to the sport, appearing at events up and down the
country, facing endless administration tasks, promoting walking events, coaching young
athletes, timekeeping, judging, lap-counting, etc. And not forgetting the young athletes
themselves, some of whom are now doing two or three training sessions per day, often over
50 hours per week, trying hard to reach the levels we encourage them to achieve.
No, I don’t consider myself one of the twenty busiest people in race walking in this country! I
wouldn’t like to name all the individuals who put so much into the sport, as I’d undoubtedly
miss out many people who do incredible amounts of work but keep a low profile. It’s thanks
to the many, many hard working people that we have finally become a sport to be proud of
again. And we will need more people doing whatever they can to help out, so when you
aren’t walking, please consider what else you can do, and offer to help out at a race!
British Record for Johanna
Jo Jackson set a new record for 20k in the
IAAF Race Walking Challenge in La
Coruna, Spain on the 19th June. Johanna
broke her own record in a world class field,
finishing in 1:30:41 an improvement of 35
seconds on her pervious record of 1:31:16
set in Lugano a year ago.
Alex Wright - Star Race Walker
Alex was voted Athlete of the Month at
Leeds Met University for June 2010, after
making incredible breakthroughs as a senior
athlete at the age of just 19. He won the
Inter Counties 3km title in Bedford in time
11.38 (9th on the UK All Time List) and
three weeks later at Bedford he was 3rd in
the European Athletics Permit Meeting over
20km (1st Brit) in 85.46 - the fastest time by
a British Athlete since 2002, putting him
14th on the All Time list and the fastest ever
time by a British teenager. This was also
well inside the England qualifying time of
90.00 for the Commonwealth Games in
Delhi and he is now ranked 4th in the
Commonwealth in 2010. Finally, he took his
first National Senior Title over 5km in
Birmingham at the Aviva European Trial and
UK Championships in a PB of 20.11.
2012 Olympic Walks Venue
The venue for the London Olympic Walks
will almost certainly be The Mall, between
Buckingham Palace and Admiralty Arch.
The lap will be a flat 2km, and pass the
official residence of the Queen - who may
be watching.
The policy on where to hold major walking
events shifted last year, during the World
Athletics Championships held in Berlin. The
Berlin race walks were held through the
Brandenburg Gate, and gained huge public
interest.
Holding race walk events in high profile
places in front of the public is now seen
as better than in a park or around a
stadium. Although the walkers will not get
a stadium finish, fans will no longer have
to choose between watching only the
stadium finish or the bulk of the race
outside instead, and it is thought that the
increased exposure for the sport will
result in more people taking up the sport.
The official course map is on the back
cover of this magazine.
Eric Tysse Fails Dug Tests
The Norwegian Athletics Federation says
race walker Erik Tysse has tested
positive for doping and has been
suspended from all competitions. Tysse
tested positive for blood booster CERA at
a competition in Italy in May. An analysis
at a laboratory in Rome showed both the
"A'' and "B'' samples were positive for
CERA.
At a news conference in Oslo a tearful
Tysse denied having used illegal drugs
and questioned how the test had been
analyzed. He said he had "nothing to
hide" and would fight to clear his name.
Tysse was fifth in the 50-kilometer race
at the Beijing Olympics.
RWR Archives Born
Thanks to Doug Fotheringham
responding to an appeal for old
magazines, the electronic archives of this
magazine are now taking shape online,
so that future generations will have a
wealth of research material freely
available for ever.
The very first ten issues of Race Walking
Record ever published (1941-1942) are
now online. Rather than dated material,
the original magazines actually make
fascinating reading, and were very
professionally produced. While we are
now looking back as far as the 1940’s,
they in turn are looking back to the latter half
of the nineteenth century, showing that race
walking is a long established sport in this
country.
There were paper shortages during World
War 2, that meant RWR was quite thin in
some months, but there is substantial news
of racewalks including many in the UK, and
overseas in Palestine and the Delhi Sikhs
14 miles, along with annual walks that still
take place today that surprisingly had large
fields for a country deep at war. July 11th
1942 had 200 start the Southern 5 Miles.
A photo of the 1936 Olympic Games trials
held in Derby, and profiles of walkers of the
day make fascinating reading. Images of the
first ten issues can be seen on the back
cover of this magazine.
Resources for Coaches
Access to the IAAF Race Walking video for
UK based walks coaches has been secured
by England Athletics. It is at the UKA
coaching website:
http://coaching.uka.org.uk/video/iaaf-racewalking-video1/
and will form the start of what will hopefully
be a growing centre for race walking
resources for coaches. Please spread the
word around the coaching fraternity if they
want a ready resource for use to promote
the event and also as a good coaching
reference.
Records Online
A new section has been added to the
website as a central information point for
walkers. It contains over 300 records,
including British, World, and Masters
records for various distances. More records
will be added over time including European,
Country, County, and Championships
Records.
The new records section has been
developed with Bob Care, and has so far
received positive feedback. It is still in its
early stage, so any missing records or
mistakes will quickly corrected when
identified.
RWR Parish Special 2010
For the second time, Race Walking
Record has produced a special souvenir
magazine for the Parish Walk. The 36
page magazine was designed to try and
encourage some of the 1,710 walkers to
have a go at other race walks. Due to
confusion last year, RWR subscribers
can request that a free copy be emailed
to them.
Brian Laver RIP
BRIAN LAVER has died in his mid-50s.
Brian was a Junior International at a time
when achieving such status was a tough
challenge. He raced in the early 70s for
Essex Beagles before switching to Ilford AC
in the mid-70s. He left race walking when
still in good form, but returned to race twice
2001. He resided in Hornchurch and his
Coach, Colin Young, said, "Brian was a
good strong lad who raced often and also
appeared in Lugano, Switzerland. He'll be
remembered as a talented and keen
competitor who graced the early/mid-70s
scene. DA
Harry Wheeler RIP
Former Yorkshire Race Walking Club
champion Harry Wheeler has died at the
age of 75 after a short illness.
He was fourth in the Bradford Walk in 1956
and third in 1957, when the walk attracted
the best long distance walkers in the land.
Serving in the army at the time, he was
regarded as one of the country’s best
walking prospects. After emigrating to New
Zealand in late 1957, Harry returned in 1963
and he and his brother Frank were
members of the successful Yorkshire
Walking Club teams in the late 60s. On his
70th birthday, Harry completed the London
Marathon.
NUTRITION:
Enzymes - keys to a healthy life - part
two: Proteolytic Enzymes
By Pat Reeves
Following on from last month's input
relative to enzymes, l will now focus on a
sub-group - namely proteolytic enzymes.
All athletes endure injuries from time to
time. These cause obvious set-backs in
training and likely cost us to pull out of
competing - or give us a poorer ranking
status.
Using proteolytic enzymes has been
scientifically shown to reduce
inflammation and thus speed healing of
such injuries and shorten time taken to
heal.
The benefits to the healing process are
via improving blood flow to the injured
area, reduced oedema and inflammation
and improved motility and flexibility.
The use of trypsin and chymotripsin,
papain and bromelain are very effective
for improving recovery rate of injuries,
both sport-related and otherwise.
Together with physical therapy,
application of ice, etc, proteolytic
enzymes absolutely have their place in
assisting a fast and complete recovery.
Oral enzyme products are well-tolerated,
which is an additional plus-point.
lf you are unfortunate enough to sustain
a sport-related injury - or any injury for
that matter - do consider a course of
these healing enzymes - either a trypsinchymotripsin
product, or a papainbromelain
product, or one that combines
all four. Utilise until the injury heals and
then use around three times each week
for maintenance. These enzymes need to
be taken on an empty stomach, obviously
employing a healthy eating plan and your
regular supplementation, which should
embrace bioflavonoids, curcumin, and
likely glucosamine with chondroitin
sulphate.
Chymotrypsin breaks down proteins into
usable components, it is also used to aid
the digestive processes. It reduces
inflammation and swelling. It is definitely
worth considering for osteo and traumatic
arthritis. It improves healing of sprains and
aids surgical recovery - though l personally
chose bromelain - this chymotrypsin is
animal derived, either bovine or porcine.
There are four main proteolytic enzymes
contained in our pancreatin of which
chymotrypsin and trypsin form two.
Trypsin is also effective for meningitis,
neuritis, hives, pleural infusion, peripheral
vascular disease and many related
conditions. Both chymotrypsin and trypsin
are best taken orally.
strains and sprains, etc. It is believed to
inhibit the body's production of
prostaglandins associated with
inflammation and pain, whilst promoting
the formation of those with an antiinflammatory
action. Bromelain can also
work well when taken in conjunction with
turmeric; it appears to aid the absorption
of curcumin, the active compound in
turmeric.
Bromelain: This proteolytic enzyme has a
wide pH range and can, therefore, be a
good plant derived substitute for both trypsin
and pepsin. I have used this effectively with
patients suffering from cellulitis,
inflammation, diabetic ulcers, acute and
long-standing trauma - and was my
supplement of choice, alongside
serrapeptase, to hasten recovery from my
recent shoulder surgeries. l have also used
bromelain against my genetically-fuelled
osteocarcoma - now thankfully eradicated -
as it is known to activate tumour necrosis
factor. It works brilliantly with all
cardiovascular conditions, thromboses,
ulcers - and for all you fit race-walkers - will
speed healing from any traumas you may
encounter on the track or road. Definitely
one to keep in your kit bag! It is best taken
orally and via topical application.
Obviously a brilliant digestive-aid especially
assisting in protein and fat digestion, recent
research has turned many experts' attention
to its use for helping sports people with
Fresh raw pineapple is a good food
source as is also the rather woody stem,
though higher amounts are required
therapeutically - typically around 1500
mg each day during acute trauma.
Unless one is eating raw and living
foodstuffs on a daily basis,
supplementing various enzymes is likely
the only method of ensuring a sufficient
supply. High-stress lifestyles, processed
foods, air and water pollution ramps up
our requirements.
Following the completion of this race, to
Bernie Hercock collapsed with a cardiac
arrest. The worst was feared, but
fortunately medically qualified people
were on hand and thanks to their efforts,
he was breathing again by the time the
paramedics arrived. He was transferred
to North Middlesex Hospital by which
time he was sufficiently recovered to
speak and he underwent tests in the
Heart Unit. He was later sitting up,
talking, and was in good spirits. Bernie
underwent a quadruple heart bypass
down the corridor within three days. He is
now well on his way to recover, and we look
This race marked the eleventh
consecutive day that race walking events
were held somewhere in the country.
There would have been an incredible 25
consecutive days racing in May from the
1st to the 25th had events also been held
on the 4th and 19th. Still, 23 days racing out
of 25 is a remarkably busy calendar for any
sport.
Jo Jackson led the women’s race all the
way, but the men’s race had Wright,
Bosworth, Finch and Boyce – in varying
orders – fighting it out all the way until
Wright opened out with 350m to go and
spread the group. Lots of PB's at the
business end. It is worth remarking on
the youth of the first six men and five of
the first seven women – one in the eye
for the moaning minnies of the sport!
Sir Roger Bannister Stadium, Oxford
The Oxford County Championships were
held a little later than normal and at the Sir
Roger Bannister Track to celebrate the
actual date of the historic mile race in 1954.
Visitors were welcome at this evening event.
The first three competitors were closely
matched and all around fifteen and a half
minutes. Steve Uttley recalled racing on the
Iffley Road track in a Universities
championship in the late '70s and most
memories opined that no race walking had
taken place on the track in the interim. The
Oxfordshire championships had been
shunted off the main championship
weekend but found a soft landing as an
extra event in the historic "Town versus
Gown" match with a prominent mid-evening
slot. Graham Chapman's efforts ensured
that a field of 11 lined up on a perfect
evening - 6 in the county event and 5
guests. Star of the show was 78 year old
Alan Flavell who returned to compete at
Iffley Road some 56 years and 27 days after
representing the AAA at 440 yards in the
same match and on the very evening when
Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute barrier
for one mile for the first time. -Steve Allen
Phil Lockwood had secured two easy
wins in the previous two races in the
absence of the Le Noury brothers, but
showed them the way home on their
return. Lockwood had the company early
on of Jason Le Noury as he forced the
pace from the start in the hot and
windless conditions. Stuart was in third
spot, well ahead of Rob Elliott. By mid
race Lockwood was clear and opened up
a winning gap of thirty six seconds as he
crossed the line in 25.21. Stuart Le Noury
had closed the gap on his brother in the
latter stages of the eight lap course, but
Jason held on by two seconds to take
second place.
Phil Lockwood claimed his third win in
the series, with a convincing victory over
second placed walker Stuart Le Noury.
Lockwood crossed the line in 1.24.27,
over two and a half minutes quicker than
his previous best. Le Noury`s time was
also a new best for him, improving by
almost two minutes. Phil Lockwood now
leads the Championship, but with two
races to be discarded in the ten race
series, either of the Le Noury boys could
get the better of him by the end of the
season. Jayne Le Noury walked well to
finish in 1.54.29, a week after walking the
Priory Park, Bedford / Bedford
International Stadium
This much anticipated EAA event lived
up to expectations as the UK walking
event of the year. It was last chance for
English athletes to attempt qualification
for the Commonwealth Games, being
held in October. Conditions at the earlier
Trials in Victoria Park in April had proved
a little too windy for fast times, so this
sheltered course had been chosen and a
top quality international field had been
invited to give our young walkers all the
encouragement that they needed.
The 20km race took place first, in the
park opposite the stadium. An accurate
course, a straight 1k out-and-back lap
had been set up. However, there were a
few problems, as it was requested at the
last minute that the turning point be
moved to allow a wider turning circle for
the large number of competitors. Wires
got crossed and it was somehow
overlooked until the officials realised after
the first couple of laps that either a new
World Record was in progress, or the
course had been shortened. With the
race in progress, officials from several
countries measured and remeasured the
lap until all were satisfied and agreed the
exact length. All competitors were then
notified that an extra 2 laps plus a small
loop had been added without altering the
course, and must be completed to reach
20k. On the one hand such a mistake
could be criticised, but on the other hand,
cynics who often query the accuracy of a
course whenever remarkable performances
or records are set can now be reassured
that this was a 100% accurately measured
and verified 20k, confirmed by international
officials - so English athletes are now
without doubt back at the high professional
levels enjoyed by previous generations of
race walkers - no argument!
Judging standards were high and many
cards issued, but only two athletes were
DQ'd. Spectators who came to watch the
event were rewarded with a tightly packed
highly impressive field. After the 20k,
officials and spectators crossed the road for
the 10k in the stadium, where even more
impressive walking was on show, thanks to
the Irish visitors boosting the entries and
providing high quality competition.
Five English Walkers gained the
Commonwealth Games qualification
times in the EAA Permit Meeting held in
conjunction with the England Athletics
Under 23 and 20 Championships on the
roads of Priory Park opposite the
stadium. Alex Wright removed 5 minutes
from his PB 85.46, the fastest time by a
British Athlete since 2002.
In only his 3rd attempt at the distance
Alex Wright overcame the conditions and
pressure to move to top of the Natioal
Rankings and to 14th on the UK All Time
list and the 3rd fastest ever time by an
Under 23. Wright who is based at the
UKA National Race Walking Centre at
Carnegie, Leeds Met took 3rd in the race
behind German Carsten Schmidt (84.15)
and Hungarian Mate Helbrand (84.48) to
become Britain's fastest ever teenager and
hopefully earn selection for the
Commonwealth Games.
Behind him fellow Leeds Met student
Brendan Boyce reduced his PB to 86.35 in
taking the Irish Senior 20km title which was
held in conjunction with the event. The third
Leeds Met student Tom Bosworth put in a
magnificent performance in the closing laps
to record 88.24 well inside the qualifying
time for Delhi. Having won the trial this
should secure his place in the England
Team alongside the already selected Jo
Jackson in the Women's 20km. Two other
English athletes went below the
Commonwealth Games Standard of 89.00;
Luke Finch in 87.43, and Ben Wears who
was the 4th English walker inside the
standard clocking 89.00.
The Women’s race was won by Hungarian
Katalin Varro (95.25) from Lithuanian
Neringa Aidietyte (96.27). Behind them triple
Commonwealth medallist Lisa Kelher
moved to 2nd on the National Rankings with
1.40.46 inside the standard of 1.42.00 and
Niobe Mendez moved to 3rd with 1.45.08. In
the Small Nations Match that included the
Junior 10km held on the track in conjunction
with the Under 20/23 Championships,
England came out on top
On the track in the Under 20
Championships, Mark O'Kane took the
10km title in a new PB of 47.04. In the
Women's race Lauren Whelan took 4
minutes of her PB to clock 52.54 and finish
first English athlete.
British Masters 5k Championships
20th June 2010
Horwich, Lancashire
Despite some local problems, due mainly
to the local carnival moving away from
the race day, the event was again both
successful and enjoyable. Unlike recent
years, the weather was kind and
conditions very good. There were 22
entries, 20 starters and 20 finishers. One
of the non starters was Mark Williams
who had won all 3 previous races: his
absence due to illness.
Overall winner was Adrian Edwards who
set a new CBP for M45. Relatively new to
race walking he has made very rapid
progress and looks a great prospect for
the longer distances. Peter Boszko set a
new British M60 CBP just one second
short of the all comers CBP held by
regular visitor Sean McMullin from Eire,
The ladies field - depleted this year by
clashes of events and injuries, saw Fiona
Bishop pull away in the latter stages for a
clean win. The outstanding performance
was a new CBP and British all time best
road 5km for M85 by Edwin Grocock. He
took 45 seconds off the previous best set
by George Mitchell in 2002. At the
combined walks and runs presentations
he received a tremendous ovation for a
brilliant effort by a true gentleman of the
road! -Eric Horwill

Hewitt Cup - Round 3
Tuesday, 22nd June 2010
The conclusion of this year's Hewitt Cup
2km. race walking series turned out to be
the most exciting yet in both boy's and girl's
categories. In the boys race, Maks Orzal
completed a hat trick of wins with Joe Smith
just managing to hold off Matthew Kibble.
However in their league where the individual
standings are based on a handicapping
system which encourages all competitors to
improve, or get close to their best times over
the 3 race series there was a tie for overall
top slot. Benjamin Allen and Josh Bramley
finished on 12 points apiece with teammates
Max Flanagan and Jake Smith only 1
and 2 points further back respectively. In the
girl's event Rachael Woolley led home
Jasmine Nicholls and Emma Achurch for the
second straight race. Achurch had a
comfortable lead in the girl's league going
into this final race but was nearly caught by
Sophie Higgins, Woolley and Isobel Keanan
who all improved on their personal bests on
the night. This was Emma's third Hewitt Cup
success (she had won in 2006 and 2007)
and she was presented with her trophy
by sister Laura who was last year's
champion. -George Smolinski
Challenge/European Trials
Alexander Stadium, Birmingham
27th Jun 2010
Conditions were very hot and the athletes
suffered in this track race in front of large
stadium crowds, being filmed by the
BBC. Lisa tripped over and tumbled to
the floor as Johanna passed her on the
outside - no contact. Lisa instantly picked
herself up and blasted off. The fall
ensured that the walking event was later
shown on TV with two minutes of good
video highlights, gaining us valuable
publicity. With a generally young field, 6
PB's and a Stadium Record, it was an
excellent race.
The event coincided with the big England
football match in the World Cup, which
took the whole country's attention. The
football was shown in the stadium during
the athletics, which could have been
distracting to the athletes. (Perhaps why
Lisa fell) The England football team
performed extremely poorly despite
gigantic budgets and the BBC athletics
presenter Steve Cram announced on
television that the football was so bad
that he "decided to watch the racewalk
instead," indicating his feelings for our
sport. In the following days many
suggestions were made about the
England football team manager. I would
suggest Andi Drake to FIFA, but we need
him in race walking!
Fresh from her bronze medal success at the
Fiona McGorum added the Keswick trophy
to her burgeoning collection of awards when
she won as leading Leicestershire Over 15.
Rachael Woolley and Jasmine Nicholls took
the other podium placings. In the male
equivalent, Maks Orzal also smashed the 10
minute barrier with another fine walk. In the
Peter Cup race for Under 15 Boys, Joe
Smith retained his title. Emma Achurch won
the Flers Trophy (awarded to the leading
Under 15 girl) ahead of Sophie Higgins
and Laura Achurch. The handsome
Livingstone House cup for top Leics
school team has been competed over for
more than fifty years and the Stokes
squad equalled the great record set by
New Parks School in the early 1960s of
Ilford Open 5 / 500th Essex League Race
Saturday, 3rd July
Redbridge Cycle Circuit, Hainault
Ilford AC staged the 500th meeting of the
Essex Walking League, which began in
1967, on a hot Saturday afternoon. On offer
was a 5 Kilometres road walk over 4-andhalf
circuits of the lower (flat) course. Many
former greats came to support this occasion
and some even got out racing pumps for
another go. Among them was John Webb
(Basildon AC) who now resides in Bristol.
This sprightly 73 year old won that first
League race 43 years ago, before becoming
an Olympian a year later in 1968 when
racing over 20km in Mexico. Among
spectators was another septuagenarian in
Paul Nihill MBE who had walked in 4
Olympics (64/68/72/76) and had won silver
in the 64 Tokyo Games over 50k. "Mr
Starter" was Ilford President Les Hislop who
after setting a 51 strong field into action,
joined in to race himself.
Among starters was long-serving Essex
County AAA Walking Secretary Ray
Pearce, who in his heyday was an Essex
County senior individual champion. Early
on saw Ilford's in-form Francisco Reis
dictating the pace while leading for 2-
and-half circuits before being overtaken
by the talented King twins from
Colchester Harriers. Daniel and Dominic
King, both Commonwealth Games
representatives, pulled ahead to deadheat
in 23 minutes and 38 seconds which
was remarkable as they'd done an 18km
training session just 2 hours earlier. Reis
trailed them with determination to come a
close 3rd. Post race saw a buffet and
social/reunion. The organisers for an
excellent day were Ilford stalwart Tony
Perkins and his wife Christine -Dave
Ainsworth
14th Gran Premio Cantones de La
Coruña
19th June 2010
IAAF Race Walking Grand Prix
La Coruna, SPAIN
Johanna Jackson broke her own British
20km Record competing in the IAAF Race
Walking Challenge Meeting in La Coruna,
Spain. In a truly world class field, she
finished a fine seventh in 1:30:41 improving
on her previous best of 1:31:16 set in
Lugano in 2009. Just behind Jo was
Australian Jess Rothwell who has been
based at the UKA National Race Walking
Centre at Leeds Met for the past month and
was 9th in 1.30.53. Jo set herself up
perfectly for the coming European
Championships in Barcelona, where the
UKA A standard was 1:31:15 - one second
faster than her previous National Record.
Jackson walked a very even race with 5k
segments of 22:22, 22:35 (reaching
halfway in 44:57) , 22:48 and 22:56 and
this was despite being on two cards for
the last 10km of her race.
China’s Yafei Zhu and Spain’s Beatriz
Pascual clinched their respective 20Km
victories to highlight the “Gran Premio
Cantones de Marcha” – the Spanish leg
of the 2010 IAAF Race Walking
Challenge on a cloudy and ideal day for
Race Walking. While the 21-year-old
Chinese retained his title from last year
with a 1:21:11 clocking, the Spaniard
Pascual managed her first ever victory at
an IAAF World Challenge permit meeting
thanks to a 1:28:05 performance. Coming
slightly over one month ahead of the
European championships the 28-year-old
Barcelona-born walker propels herself
into the medal picture.
The men’s race was an unforgettable
three-horse sprint finish. Over the 1kmlong
flat circuit, the men’s contest opened
quite conservatively as the large lead
pack cruised the 5000m point in 20:34
headed by the Chinese pair of Zhu and
newly-minted World Cup winner Hao
Wang while the rest of favourites walked
tucked behind, the Australian duo of
reigning Olympic bronze medallist Jared
Tallent and Luke Adams plus Mexico’s
Eder Sánchez among others.They all
reached the halfway point in 40:54 and
there were not major changes until the
closing 5k when Zhu and the current
World silver medallist Hao broke away
from the rest with only Colombia’s Luis
Fernando López, who was a creditable
fifth at last month’s World Cup in
Chihuahua, for company. Entering the
closing 1000, it seemed unavoidable a
thrilling sprint for the victory and it was
finally the case. To balance even more
their winning chances, the strongest man
on paper Hao had already received two
warnings while Zhu and Lopez had only
been warned once. For the delight of the
knowledgeable La Coruña crowd the
three top walkers fought fiercely through
the finish line and it was Zhu who proved
to be fastest in 1:21:11 and a one-second
advantage on runner-up Lopez, himself
another second clear of Hao.
Sanchez, the 2009 World Cup bronze
medallist and arguably holder of the best
technique in the field, had to be satisfied
with fourth place not too far away from the
podium places as he was timed at 1:21:16.
Zhu – a gifted prodigy who clocked 1:18:44
for the distance at the age of 17 – declared,
“Today was a fantastic and tough win. I’m
just competing at several events across
Europe but my primary goal for this year are
the Asian Games to be held in November in
Guangzhou (China). Before that, I’ll also
take part at the IAAF World Challenge final
in Beijing next 19 September. My
compatriots and I are already accustomed
to Europe customs, food, etcetera, as we
have spent a lot of time this year here.” After
his win in Krakow on 29 May, where he
clocked a 38:40 PB over 10 Km, Zhu and
his colleagues travelled to Italy for a training
stint with former World and Olympic
champion, Maurizio Damilano.
In contrast to men’s event, the women’s
race opened at a brisk pace with a 5000m
split of 22:14 for a quintet comprising the
Portuguese triumvirate of Vera Santos, Ines
Henriques and Ana Cabecinha, Ireland’s
reigning World silver medallist Olive
Loughnane and Spain’s Beatriz Pascual.
The Spaniard, who was a disappointing 11th
in Chihuahua in 1:36:08, proved to be
determined to take revenge on that belowpar
performance and by the halfway point
she walked alone at the forefront in 44:09,
with a seven-second margin on this year’s
World Cup leader Santos. By then,
Loughnane travelled in fourth some 37
seconds in arrears. Throughout the second
half Pascual maintained her dominance
while a fading Santos was comfortably
overtaken by Loughnane with six kilometres
to go. At the finish line, Pascual clocked her
second fastest time of 1:28:05 only bettered
by the 1:27:44 which led her to the 6th place
at the Beijing Olympics. The Irish star came
second 31 seconds behind but 20 seconds
clear of Santos. “My 2010 season was
going too well and so this win is a huge
moral booster thinking of next month’s
Europeans in my hometown of
Barcelona, I suffered a knee injury last
November and could only resume full
training in March. My two-week training
camp in Font Romeu just ahead of
today’s event has proved to be positive
so I plan now to return there for another
two weeks.”
Hi John,
Below you’ll find what I did on the day of
the National 20kms champs. (Heaton
"Parkrun" Event, 5k, Manchester) As a
walker I was pleased to finish 146th out
of a field of 217. I’m hoping that by doing
these events we might get a few people
interested in race walking.
I like your recent introduction of age
grading of results on Racewalk UK. It's
confirmed what I've long thought: John
Payn (M75) is consistently the most
outstanding walker in Lancashire WC.
Best wishes,
A response to Doug Corkhill’s letter from a
previous issue of RWR:
If Doug Corkill is going to quote numbers he
should get them right, there were 1.5 pages
of Sheffield Schools results not 2.5! There
were around 400 finishers in 28 races I don't
apologise for sending in the top 6 in each
race. Incidentally in issue 798 of RWR an
Isle of Man result takes over 1.5 pages to
list all the walkers inside 3 hours for 10
miles!
Brian Adams
Editor: I have significantly increased the
number of pages in this magazine so that all
results can be shown, and am happy to
focus on selected areas from time to time
for various reasons. Of course people in one
area may not care about what is occurring in
another, but it is important to our sport to
encourage and promote. Everyone is free to
discard any items from this magazine that
do not interest them and still be left with a
good read, but I will continue to print
anything that is going on that I think
interests a proportion of readers.
I have just received my copy of Masters
Athletics 2010 (Summer No 92) and once
again Brian Owen has not found room or
chosen not to publish the Masters Road and
Indoor Walk Rankings so I do hope that you
can find time and space to include them in a
forthcoming edition of Race Walking
Record. I don't want all the hard work of
compiling the rankings to go to waste and I
am sure that they would be of interest to
fellow Masters Walkers.
Kind Regards
Bob Care
Editor: Of course. Masters athletics would
be so much poorer without walking. They
usually give us a lot of credit. Historical
performances will be added to
RacewalkUK.
Great work on the archives. As they
come on stream, they convey a sense of
social history in general as well the
unfolding story of the sport itself. The
archive is excellent and much
appreciated. I lost over 20 years of
Records in a flooded cellar in the mid-
80's. If you manage the job, in a few
years I'll be able to have a go at
producing All-Time Lists for the
Lancashire Walking Club. I don't know
whether you noticed but the 1976
Records you've scanned reveal a little
talked about moment in the history of
walking in Lancashire. In frustration with
what we saw as the backward views of
the old guard back then, a number of us
including Ron Wallwork, Julian Hopkins,
Fred Pearce [!] and myself resigned and
joined Blackburn Harriers. It came to
nothing and it has now been swept under
the carpet, but one day I'll write up the
story.
Sadly I've been unable to race walk for a
couple of years now due to severe pain
in my right hip. I keep fit by cycling in the
Cretan mountains. Hope to get to the
Lancashire AGM in October/November.
Best Wishes, Tony Taylor, Crete
------------
Over the past decade, and perhaps even
longer, there has been a mood of doom
and gloom about the state of race
walking in the UK. In part it was justified:
it seemed a sport destined to oblivion
with small fields made up almost entirely
of ageing veterans. That is now
changing. My reading of the rankings and
results tells me that we have some
talented walkers eager to make their
mark at International level. There are
races, somewhere in the UK, weekly
throughout the year. Participation is
increasing. Our top veterans are world
class. We have enthusiastic and
dedicated coaches working with the best of
the younger generation.
So why the continuing negativity Of
course, the big fields and the huge depth of
talent that existed in the 50's, 60's and 70's
has faded away, and is reflected throughout
athletics. Times have changed and the long
lunch hour has evaporated. Now there are
work and domestic pressures that were
unknown 40 or 50 years ago. Against that
kind of background few are able to commit
themselves to the demands of athletics at a
high level, and to think of a return to that
earlier era is mistaken. I suspect that when
compared to the number of race walking
events in other European countries, and the
numbers taking part, the sport in the UK is
in a remarkably healthy condition.
That is not to suggest complacency. There
is still a need to integrate race-walking into
mainstream athletics. In Poland, where I
live, clubs do not have race-walking
sections; they have race-walkers just as
they have sprinters, high jumpers, shot
putters, and marathon runners. Here racewalking
is a young persons sport, and if 10
walkers turn out for a Veterans National
Championship we say that we have a big
field! In Pila, not far from my home, there
are at least three schools with brand new
200m outdoor tartan tracks plus facilities for
field events. How does a relatively poor
European country do this I don't know the
answer, but the Department of Sport and
Tourism seems to be remarkably well
funded. We have excellent athletic
stadiums, generously funded sports clubs,
but no motorways! A carry over, no doubt,
from when the East Europeans were a
fearsome force in world athletics. The media
and commercial companies are not averse
to funding athletic events of all kinds: our
New Year Fun Run has a prize list that is
truly phenomenal. There is a down side. I
usually have to travel long distances to
compete, and nearly all require an overnight
stay. But that is what people do. At the
Gdansk International Festival of Race-
Walking the competitors from Latvia
endured a bus ride of more than 24 hours,
raced, and then began the long haul
home again.
To return to the situation in the UK. I am
optimistic. Things are not so desperate
as they sometimes seem if you look at
the things in your favour. You can train
and race all year. Our winters are often
plagued by snow and ice, and, apart from
a few indoor events, November - March
is the closed season. These, however,
are just practical matters. I continue to be
optimistic that the UK will not be short of
senior category walkers who excel, but
due to the changes in the culture of work,
family, and leisure, I am slightly
apprehensive that, in an ironic twist of
fortune, there will be few to replace the
veterans of an earlier era who provide
the base from which race-walking is
developing so vigorously today. Good
luck!
------------
In 2009 I was diagnosed with arthritis in
my right hip and told that if I didn't stop
road running then I would need a hip
replacement in 2-5 years. Not a pleasant
prospect and it frightened me to say the
least as I am only 50! I was also
extremely upset, as I had been running
for 12 years and didn't want to give it up.
Anyway, after struggling with feelings of
envy, I have gotten over it now and have
compromised by taking up speed walking
combined with some running. I am really
enjoying the speed/race walking and
believe it to be really challenging. I am
looking to get together with other people
who race/speed walk but am
disappointed to find only one club in
Norfolk (West Norfolk AC) and that's in
Kings Lynn (I live in Norwich).
Can you help me please by putting me in
touch with people who live in and around
Norwich
Thanks and best wishes,
Lyn Hazleton
I wish to enquire if there is such a pursuit as
racewalking events for amputees, anywhere
in the UKI had my right leg amputated on
May 2008, then my left leg amputated 12
weeks later in August 2008, both below the
knee. I then received a kidney transplant in
May 2009. I then commenced racewalk
training on 2nd December 2009. Since then,
and to date I have competed in several 5k
running events, against able bodied
athletes. My personal best to date for a 5k
racewalk event as a double amputee is
49:30. Before my kidney failure and loss of
limbs, I was a regular club runner with my
local Dundee Hawkhill Harriers AC. I
participated in numerous cross country, fell
running, track, 10k, half marathon, and full
marathon events over many years. I am due
to compete in the British Transplant Games
5k racewalk, at the lovely city of Bath on
Sunday 22nd August 2010, albeit against
other transplant recipients. I have been
informed that I will be the only double
amputee racewalker in the event.
Editor: Race walking as a sport was
invented by people to challenge and test
their physical abilities, and has many
inspiring stories of athletes pushing
themselves beyond other peoples
expectations. Ronnie is a true hero, and I’m
very moved by his story.
Island Games - Isle of Wight 2011
The Island Games is a competition for small
islands along the lines of a mini
Olympics/Commonwealth Games. It was
first held in 1985 in the Isle of Man but since
the second games in Guernsey 1987,
despite still being in the list of events
(men 10k, women's 3k,) race walking has
not been included due to lack of support.
The minimum requirement is 6 athletes
from 4 different member islands.
Already there are expressions of interest
from some Guernsey men, athletes of
both sexes from the Isle of Man would
like to compete (apparently there is a
maximum 2 athletes per team) and some
from the Isle of Wight. If anyone knows of
any athletes from the islands listed below
or thinks they may be eligible to compete
for one of the association, please get in
touch. The consideration times will be
expected to be 53 minutes for men and
17 minutes for women.
I've been waiting over 30 years for my
GB track suit from when I was team
manager for about 3 years. I did get a
track suit but had to give it to a youth
who’s track suit didn't turn up. I am the
dog’s body of race walking.
