All types of vehicles and motorcycles are welcome to attend. Vehicle owners are admitted free of charge as long as they bring items to donate to Perrysburg Township’s annual Operation Bread Basket ZOO O BREW drive. Casino Gaming Series The Finer Points of Blackjack The library will host a series of programs focusing on strategies to increase the odds at casino games. Owens students to host homecoming dress sale Owens Community College’s Raising Awareness Club is helping to ensure area high school girls are able to receive a special homecoming experience by hosting a homecoming dress sale. Front St., Perrysburg Applebutter Fest volunteers sought The Historical Society of Grand Rapids, which sponsors the village’s annual Applebutter Festival, is seeking volunteers to help prepare apple butter for this year’s Fest, set for October 13. The Big Stir will be held Saturday, September 28, from 8 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., at the Kryder Farm, 4-862 County Road P, north of McClure. The day will be filled with cooking, stirring, and canning four kettles of apple butter. Participants should bring a dish for a potluck luncheon which will be held at noon. All are invited to volunteer Prime Rib, Crab Fest set The Wood County Special Olympics’ 16th annual Prime Rib and Crab Fest will be held on Saturday, November 2. The festival name is the French translation meaning “Rock of Beef” or “Buffalo Rock,” which commemorates the rock which is still present in the Maumee River area of Waterville. Toledo Museum of Art announces program highlights The Toledo Museum of Art announces the following program highlights for October. Admission is free. Exhibition Openings Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints–October 4, through January 1, Canaday Gallery. During the 1930s, the Toledo Museum of Art helped introduce modern Japanese prints to American audiences with two landmark exhibitions. These seminal shows, one in 1930 and one in 1936, featured the works of 15 contemporary Japanese artists who had revived the traditional art of the woodblock print for a new era. Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints reassembles and reinterprets the 1930 show. The museum owns all but five of the 343 prints displayed in the exhibition, most of them donated by local business leader H.D. Bennett in 1939. Fresh Impressions stresses the importance of the early 20th-century resurgence of woodblock printmaking in Japan—known as the shin hanga (“new prints”) movement that combined traditional technique with Western inspiration, and showcases the museum’s role in popularizing the genre in the United States. Also shown will be Japanese kimono and kabuki costumes, swords and armor. Ebb & Flow: Cross-Cultural Prints–October 11 through January 5, Works on Paper Gallery. The exhibition explores the global influence of Japanese printmaking in the 20th century. Highlighting the exchange of ideas between Eastern and Western cultures, the exhibition consists of approximately 60 works from the TMA collection and loans from other institutions. Continuing Exhibition Perry’s Victory: The Battle of Lake Erie, through November 10, Galleries 28 and 29. Perry’s Victory: The Battle of Lake Erie commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, one of the largest naval battles of the War of 1812. The exhibition features paintings, prints, sculptures, artifacts, letters and music, on loan and from the museum’s collection, that recount the historic battle. One of the prominent works on view will be the heroically scaled painting Perry’s Victory on Lake Erie by marine painter Thomas Birch. This work depicts a critical moment just before the surrender of Great Britain’s Royal Navy. The naval engagement, led by Commander Oliver Hazard Perry in September 1813, was a watershed moment in which the Americans reclaimed the lake and Perry became a national hero. Community Gallery The Art of Japanese Fashion, through December 27. Garments created by community artists who were challenged to create style informed by the Japanese aesthetic are displayed in this exhibition, which culminates with a TMA Japanese fashion runway show on December 27. Eastern Inspiration, through January 4. Emulating the rich yet subtle colors of Japanese prints and bold patterns of kimono, works of art created by community participants emphasize that it doesn’t matter what life challenges one faces, as making art connects cultures and inspires beauty. Obituaries •EDWARD COWDEN Edward Dean Cowden, 55, of Perrysburg, died Friday, September 13, 2013. He was born in Toledo, on March 26, 1958, to Marvin and Dorothy (Wholder) Cowden. He graduated from Anthony Wayne High School, and on May 25, 1985, was married to Lori (Kaszap). Mr. Cowden worked as a shipping supervisor at Pro- Pak Industries and was a member of Robinson Locke Lodge 659. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Lori and would cruise as often as possible. He is survived by his wife, Lori; son, Joshua; daughter, Shadow (David) Ellis; grandchildren, William, Jack and Elliot Ellis; sisters, Debbie (Gary) Perry, Nancy (Fred) Wagner, Vickie (Paul) Davis; brothers, Phil (Chris), Marvin and Robert (Amber) Cowden, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held today, September 19, at 11 a.m., in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Fort Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg. Cincala Jr., 86, of Rossford, died Friday September 13, 2013. He was born on July 12, 1927, in Rossford, to Mary and Joseph Cincala, Sr. He attended Walnut Street grade school and graduated from Rossford High School in May of 1945, where he participated on both the basketball and football teams. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class from 1945 to 1946 and after discharge was a member of the American Legion. After his naval discharge, Mr. Cincala attended a twoyear technical school, earning a degree in electronics. He was employed by Libbey-Owens-Ford as an electrician for more than 35 years. He married Helen Hendrzak at St. Mary Magdeline Church on November 17, 1951. They were parishioners of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church. Mr. Cincala was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed a long life of hunting and fishing especially with his trusted canine companion, Amos. He greatly enjoyed sporting events, especially watching his two granddaughters from Perrysburg play basketball and tennis and traveling north to Michigan to watch his four youngest granddaughters perform in multiple dance recitals. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen; children, Carleen Cincala, Nadine Hoffmann, Timothy Cincala, and Tina Marie (Kevin) Gray; granddaughters, Kirsten (Joshua) Babcock, Kate (Michael Frederick) Hoffmann, Ashley (Chris) Leone, Lauren Gray, Chelsea Gray, and Haley Gray; sisters, Margaret Rysz and Mary Biskupski, and many nieces and nephews. Honoring Mr. Cinala’s final wishes, all visitation and funeral services were private. He was buried at Fort Meigs Cemetery in Perrysburg, on September 16, 2013.
