fire chief’s vehicle is nearing
the end of its life cycle and
has about 181,000 miles. The
committee directed him to
investigate what vehicles are
available.
•The chief informed the
committee that he applied for
a Bureau of Workers’ Compensation
grant to obtain an
automatic patient life/load
device for both squads.
If the grant is approved,
the city’s match would be
$29,000.
Councilman Staczek
questioned how many workers’
compensation claims
were filed within the past
five years relating to back
injuries from lifting patients,
and was told “possibly one
or none.”
“The committee considered
this a low priority item,”
the councilman said.
If the grant money is
awarded, the committee can
decide whether or not to
accept the funds.
Other Business
In other business, council:
•Approved the annual
request from the Rossford
High School DECA program
to hold the Halloween parade
on Sunday, October 27 at 2
p.m. The theme will be “The
Jungle.”
•Heard the second reading
of five ordinances amending
the zoning code concerning
maximum building heights,
driveway regulations, size
and placement of accessory
structures.
The planning commission
voted last month to recommend
that council approve
all the changes.
Council’s next meeting
will be at 7 p.m., Monday,
September 23, at the municipal
building, 133 Osborn
Street. The meeting is open
to the public.
VA keeps an open line of
communication with our veterans
and that they are aware
of what resources are available
to them,” Congressman
Latta said.
“Our veterans have honored
their commitments to
this nation, and it must
remain a top priority that we
ensure veterans receive the
benefits they were promised
and have rightfully earned.”
The forum provided guidance
and assistance for veterans
who need support for
their claims applications and
completing necessary documents.
It also offered information
on resources available to
help them and their families,
including recent initiatives of
the VA to improve the delivery
of benefits to veterans.
Mr. Latta held a similar
forum in Defiance earlier
that day.
Twp. zoning
commission
approves
two requests
At the September 9 meeting,
the Perrysburg Township
zoning commission approved
two zoning requests.
George Oravecz, consulting
engineer for Redwood
Acquisition LLC, requested a
minor modification to Barrington
Place Two.
The commission had
approved the original plan at
its October 9 meeting, but the
applicant returned to request
an increase in the size of a
proposed accessory building.
The structure originally
was proposed as a maintenance
garage, but Redwood
Acquisition also sought to add
a sales office to the building.
The zoning commission
approved the construction of a
24- by 24-foot building.
Sigma Technologies, Ltd.
also came before the board
with a landscape plan as part
of its site plan review. The site
plan had been approved by the
commission in August, and
they approved the landscape
plan at Monday’s meeting.
Commissioners
announce levy
reduction
The Wood County Commissioners,
James Carter,
Doris Herringshaw and Joel
Kuhlman, working with Jobs
and Family Services Director
Dave Wigent, have requested
the Wood County Budget
Commission to reduce collections
of the Adult and Protective
Services Levy by 50 percent
during 2014.
This reduction will save
county taxpayers approximately
$1.86 million.
The JFS staff has been
extremely responsible with
expenditures relating to this
levy, which is what has
enabled the reduced collection
for one year.
This is the third time that
the Commissioners and JFS,
in cooperation with the Budget
Commission, have been
able to voluntarily reduce
levy collection since 2000.
by $1.6 million from last
year.
Revenues for the year
are projected to be $26.13
million.
Treasurer Carrie Herringshaw
said the district
is seeing a decline in real
property tax revenues due
to reappraisals in 2012 in
Lucas and Ottawa counties.
However, state foundation
funds are estimated to
increase by 6.25 percent or
$14.04 million, she said,
adding, “While the numbers
used in the funding
formula have not been
finalized by the Ohio
Department of Education,
we feel this is a realistic
estimate at this time.”
Ms. Herringshaw noted
that as a result of contract
negotiations, employees
will see a 2.5 percent
salary increase.
As part of the agreement,
employees also
agreed to pay more for
health insurance.
Although the health
insurance premiums
increased by 7 percent, the
overall effective change in
insurance cost to the district
is -7 percent, she said,
adding that there also was
cost reduction due to a
change in co-pays and
deductibles.
In addition, the district
is experiencing a cost savings
with new staff, who
replaced retiring personnel.
The treasurer concluded,
“Overall, we’re in
good shape. We’re right on
track with where we
expected to be.”
