Penta students host Patriot Day
ceremony to commemorate 9/11
Last Wednesday, students
and staff in the public
safety/criminal justice and
EMT/fire science programs
at Penta Career Center
marked the events of
September 11, 2001 with a
brief Patriot Day ceremony.
The ceremony took
place near the flag pole at
the career center’s main
entrance and featured a
color guard flag tribute, the
playing of Taps and
remarks by Wood County
Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.
Staff and students
throughout the building
viewed the ceremony via a
live broadcast to all classrooms
by students in the
digital video program.
Austin Fleck, a criminal
justice program senior,
opened the sixth annual
Patriot Day memorial service
Ḣe referred to the event
that occurred 12 years
ago as “arguably one
of America’s greatest
tragedies.”
Noting that 2,977
Americans lost their lives
that day, he added,
“September 11, 2001 was
the most devastating and
tragic attack on U.S. soil
since the bombing of Pearl
Harbor.”
The senior recognized
the law enforcement, firefighters
and paramedics
who responded to the airplane
crashes at the World
Trade Center in New York
City as well as a field in
Shanksville, Pennsylvania
and the Pentagon in
Washington, D.C.
In New York that day,
the fire department lost 343
firefighters; the police
department suffered the loss
of life to 23 officers, and 37
officers from the port
authority died.
“Due to the brave and
courageous acts of all these
unselfish heroes, surviving
Americans across our country
now remember, honor
and pay tribute to our fallen
heroes and innocent victims
of September 11,” said
Austin.
Following his comments,
members of the
color guard–Jared Earley of
Springfield Schools, Trent
Morelock of Rossford
Schools and John Altman
and Lena Gilbert of
Bowling Green Schools –
raised the American flag
and lowered it to half staff
in remembrance.
Trevor Harris of the fire
science program and Matt
Elwing-Tresman of digital
video production played
Taps with accompaniment
by Jacob Hazel and Nick
Katafias of the criminal justice
program.
Public safety students
stood solemnly at attention
while the flag was raised
and remained at attention
for the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Then at approximately
8:45 a.m., the time in which
the first plane hit the north
tower, the students held a
moment of silence.
The moment of silence
was followed by comments
from Sheriff Wasylyshyn
who recalled the events of
that fateful day.
Like so many other
Americans, the sheriff
remembers where he was
that morning when the
news broke about the first
tower.
An officer for the
Perrysburg Police Division,
the sheriff was home with
his 2-year-old twins.
Township trustees approve traffic study
By Jane Maiolo
An increase in the number
of accidents and concerns
from area residents
prompted the Perrysburg
Township trustees to
approve a joint traffic study
for the Roachton and Hull
Prairie roads intersection.
At the September 11
meeting, the trustees
approved the study which
will cost $5,668, but
requested to pay only 25
percent of the cost. Trustees
Bob Mack and Craig
LaHote approved the study,
and Gary Britten, who
works for the Wood County
engineer’s office, abstained
from voting.
The intersection with
stop signs on Hull Prairie
and bordered by three jurisdictions,
is 50 percent in the
township, 25 percent in the
City of Perrysburg and 25
percent in Middleton
Township. A Wood County
road, it is maintained by the
county engineer’s office.
Rob Black of West River
Road and a member of the
township planning commission,
asked the trustees to
move forward with the
study.
“There are many intersections
in our jurisdiction
that could be addressed.
This is one I’m concerned
about at this time,” he said,
adding that he has discussed
the issue with county engineer
Ray Huber.
Mr. Black noted that a
crash occurred recently and
believes the intersection
needs some type of signalization
as a “matter of public
safety.”
Township administrator
Walt Celley said the city has
agreed to pay 25 percent and
the county also has agreed to
contribute, but Middleton
Township will not since they
have other intersections in
their township that they are
more “worried about.”
Because one-half of the
intersection is in the township,
he and Mr. Black suggested
the township contribution
toward the study be
50 percent.
The City of Rossford will
conduct its annual fall residential
brush pick-up during
the week of September 23.
The city’s public works
department will perform the
brush collection from
September 23 to 27 based on
a daily schedule by street
where the work will be performed.
Brush and limb pick-up
will only be from the street.
There is no alley pick up.
Residents who need temporary
“no parking” signs can
call the public works department
at 419-666-0210, extension
Residents are reminded
that the public works department
will not collect household
items or building materials.
Residents are encouraged
to contact private haulers to
arrange pick up of such items.
Mr. LaHote questioned
whether a roundabout would
be considered as part of the
study, noting that a roundabout
is being planned at
State Route 199 and
Roachton.
Mr. Black said he doesn’t
know if it would be part of
the study.
Mr. Mack added that it is
usually the Ohio
Department of Transportation
that seeks roundabouts
at state roads, noting
that this is a county/local
road and therefore not
impacted by ODOT.
Mr. Black recommended
moving forward with the
study. “I have a long history
of working with public
health and safety,” he said
referring to his 20 years
with the zoning commission.
“I’d suggest we support
it.”
He admitted that $5,800
is not “an insignificant
amount of money, but safety
is an important issue.”
Mr. Mack said he supports
the study and Mr.
Council discusses intersection safety
By Beth Church
Concerns about the safety
of the State Route 795 and
Crossroads Parkway intersection
were raised at the
September 9 Rossford City
Council meeting.
Councilman Jerry Staczek
said the public safety committee,
which he chairs,
recently discussed the issue.
Police Chief Glenn Goss
and Fire Chief Jim Verbosky
agreed that there have been a
high number of traffic crashes
there.
“A green arrow lets you
turn left, or south, on
Crossroads, and then the light
goes to green, but people
under the light are still
going,” he explained.
The crashes occur with
drivers turning left in front of
traffic coming eastbound on
Route 795.
The speed of traffic coming
down the hill on 795 is
deceptive to drivers waiting
to turn, the chief noted.
Councilman Chuck
Duricek agreed, “It’s hard to
judge how fast they’re coming.”
Chief Goss would like to
see a designated stand-alone
turn light installed for westbound
Route 795 traffic.
City officials will meet
with the Ohio Department of
Transportation to determine if
changes can be made.
Public Safety Issues
Councilman Staczek said
the public safety committee
also explored several other
issues:
•The fire department is
scheduled to purchase a new
rescue squad next year and is
unsure of which squad to
keep in service.
“The ‘red’ squad continues
to require excessive
maintenance,” the councilman
said, adding that the
engine should be replaced at a
cost of about $25,000.
“We’ve chewed through
our whole maintenance budget
on that one rig alone,”
Chief Verbosky told council.
“I have every invoice for that
It’s the time of year
when the Rossford High
School marching band
takes to the field and their
crystal clear cadence can
be heard echoing across
town through the crisp
autumn air.
Just days after the safety of the
Crossroads Parkway/Route 795 intersection
was discussed by city council, another
traffic crash took place there, sending a
Northwood man to the hospital.
At 11:48 a.m. Saturday, September 14, a
four-car accident occurred.
Gregory Fritz, driving a Cadillac eastbound
on Route 795, was approaching the
intersection on a green light when Alfred
Maciag of Walbridge, driving a Dodge pickup
truck, turned left from Route 795 to the
parkway, in front of Mr. Fritz.
According to a Rossford police report,
this caused Mr. Fritz’s vehicle to strike the
right rear of the truck, then it continued on
truck, which is a pretty thick
stack.”
Law Director Kevin
Heban explained that the
city–along with many other
cities–is part of a class action
lawsuit concerning the squad.
Chief Verbosky said the
squad with a Ford chassis was
purchased in 2007 when the
federal government was
changing the fuel emissions
standards.
“The motor is engineered
horribly,” he explained,
adding that it frequently is out
of service for several weeks
at a time.
Councilman Duricek, an
automotive technician, said
he has seen many vehicles of
that era with similar problems.
“They were selling things
that just didn’t work,” he
added.
The department’s “white”
squad, although older, is in
better overall mechanical
condition.
The public safety committee
voted to recommend that
the white squad be kept in
service, functioning as the
number two unit upon arrival
of the new squad in 2014.
A new squad will cost
and struck the side of a Chevy Equinox driven
by Dianna Romas of Wayne, Michigan,
who was stopped at the red light on the
parkway.
Mr. Maciag’s truck spun into a Ford minivan
driven by Cheryl Perlaky of Oregon
waiting at the red light on the parkway in the
right lane.
Mr. Fritz’s vehicle continued on across
the parkway and stopped in the grass along
the road. The Cadillac suffered severe damage
and was towed from the scene.
Above, Rossford Fire Captain Dave St.
Johns assists at the accident. Mr. Fritz was
transported with incapacitating injuries to
St. Charles Hospital, police said.
about $140,000, the chief
said.
Councilman Robert Ruse
suggested that funds from the
casino grant to the city be
used to help with the cost.
and placement of accessory
structures.
The planning commission
voted last month to recommend
that council approve
all the changes.
Council’s next meeting
will be at 7 p.m., Monday,
September 23, at the municipal
building, 133 Osborn
Street. The meeting is open
to the public.
VA keeps an open line of
communication with our veterans
and that they are aware
of what resources are available
to them,” Congressman
Latta said.
“Our veterans have honored
their commitments to
this nation, and it must
remain a top priority that we
ensure veterans receive the
benefits they were promised
and have rightfully earned.”
The forum provided guidance
and assistance for veterans
who need support for
their claims applications and
completing necessary documents.
It also offered information
on resources available to
help them and their families,
including recent initiatives of
the VA to improve the delivery
of benefits to veterans.
Mr. Latta held a similar
forum in Defiance earlier
that day.
Twp. zoning
commission
approves
two requests
At the September 9 meeting,
the Perrysburg Township
zoning commission approved
two zoning requests.
George Oravecz, consulting
engineer for Redwood
Acquisition LLC, requested a
minor modification to Barrington
Place Two.
The commission had
approved the original plan at
its October 9 meeting, but the
applicant returned to request
an increase in the size of a
proposed accessory building.
The structure originally
was proposed as a maintenance
garage, but Redwood
Acquisition also sought to add
a sales office to the building.
The zoning commission
approved the construction of a
24- by 24-foot building.
Sigma Technologies, Ltd.
also came before the board
with a landscape plan as part
of its site plan review. The site
plan had been approved by the
commission in August, and
they approved the landscape
plan at Monday’s meeting.
Commissioners
announce levy
reduction
The Wood County Commissioners,
James Carter,
Doris Herringshaw and Joel
Kuhlman, working with Jobs
and Family Services Director
Dave Wigent, have requested
the Wood County Budget
Commission to reduce collections
of the Adult and Protective
Services Levy by 50 percent
during 2014.
This reduction will save
county taxpayers approximately
$1.86 million.
The JFS staff has been
extremely responsible with
expenditures relating to this
levy, which is what has
enabled the reduced collection
for one year.
This is the third time that
the Commissioners and JFS,
in cooperation with the Budget
Commission, have been
able to voluntarily reduce
levy collection since 2000.
that as a result of contract
negotiations, employees
will see a 2.5 percent
salary increase.
As part of the agreement,
employees also
agreed to pay more for
health insurance.
Although the health
insurance premiums
increased by 7 percent, the
overall effective change in
is -7 percent, she said,
adding that there also was
cost reduction due to a
change in co-pays and
deductibles.
In addition, the district
is experiencing a cost savings
with new staff, who
replaced retiring personnel.
The treasurer concluded,
“Overall, we’re in
good shape. We’re right on
track with where we
expected to be.”
Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Very soon we will be
asked to support a school
bond issue for brand new
elementary schools in the
Rossford School District.
In the last two years,
many members of our community
have worked very
hard to gather information
about our schools and the
future of our district. They
presented that information
through various public
meetings and mailings to
all of us.
Several times they even
asked every resident in the
district their thoughts and
opinions on how to accomplish
this goal. A great
number of you shared your
thoughts and preferences,
and these were all used by
the volunteer committees to
make a final recommendation
to the school board.
The result is a direct reflection
of your input.
Our schools are in dire
need of replacement. It is
remarkable that our dedicated
teachers and our
determined children
achieved Excellence with
Distinction despite facilities
that distract and impair
the learning environment.
Recently I sat in 95-degree
heat and wondered what
the temperature was inside
our elementary schools.
100 degrees
The goal of this issue is
to provide our children
with modern facilities and
with modern technology so
that they are best prepared
for an extremely competitive
world. It is time to rise
to our responsibilities and
give them the support they
have earned and deserve.
This is about our children.
This is about our
responsibility to them. Our
teachers have done their
job extremely well. Our
children have demonstrated
their desire to learn and
achieve. Now we must do
our part to provide them
with an environment that
gives them the best opportunity
to succeed in whatever
they wish to do.
This is about our community,
our kids, our
future.
Ohio’s popular whitetailed
deer archery hunting
season starts Saturday, September
28, and is open
through February 2, according
to the Ohio Department
of Natural Resources
(ODNR).
Approximately 205,000
bowhunters will participate
in one of the longest deer
hunting seasons in the nation.
This number represents more
than half of the Ohioans that
will hunt deer this season.
Ohio is introducing an
antlerless deer muzzleloader
hunting season October 12-
13. It is legal to bowhunt
during this weekend, but no
bucks may be killed, regardless
of hunting implement.
Deer hunting hours are 30
minutes before sunrise to 30
minutes after sunset for all
deer seasons. Archery season
is also open during the week
of deer-gun season, December
2-8.
The statewide limit is
nine deer (excluding ODNR
Division of Wildlife authorized
controlled hunts), but
hunters cannot exceed a
county bag limit. Only one
buck may be killed regardless
of county or hunting
method. Only one antlerless
permit may be used per
county, and antlerless permits
are not valid after Sunday,
December 1.
Archers hunting during
the statewide gun, youth gun
and muzzleloader seasons
must meet the hunter orange
requirement by visibly wearing
a vest, coat, jacket or
coveralls that are either solid
hunter orange or camouflage
hunter orange. This requirement
applies statewide on
both public and private land.
A new tagging procedure
administered by the ODNR
Division of Wildlife requires
hunters to make their own
game tag to attach to a deer.
Game tags can be made of
any material (cardboard,
plastic, paper, etc.) as long as
it contains the hunter’s name,
date, time and county of the
kill. For more information on
changes to the game check
process, go to the Deer Hunting
Resources page at
wildohio.com.
All hunters must report
their deer harvest using the
automated game-check system.
Hunters have three
options to complete the game
check:
•Online at ohiogame
check.com;
•Call 877-TAG-ITOH
(824-4864);
The ODNR Division of
Wildlife remains committed
to properly managing Ohio’s
deer populations through a
combination of regulatory
and programmatic changes.
Progress toward reducing
locally abundant herds can
be expected as strides have
already been made in reducing
deer herds in many counties
closer to target levels.
Ohio hunters are encouraged
to harvest more does
this season to help the needy
in their area. The ODNR
Division of Wildlife is working
with Farmers and
Hunters Feeding the Hungry
(FHFH) to help pay for the
processing of donated venison.
Hunters who donate
their deer to a food bank are
not required to pay the processing
cost as long as funding
for the effort lasts. More
Toledo Museum of Art
announces program highlights
The Toledo Museum of
Art announces the following
program highlights for October.
Admission is free.
Exhibition Openings
Fresh Impressions: Early
Modern Japanese
Prints–October 4, through
January 1, Canaday Gallery.
During the 1930s, the Toledo
Museum of Art helped introduce
modern Japanese prints
to American audiences with
two landmark exhibitions.
These seminal shows, one in
1930 and one in 1936, featured
the works of 15 contemporary
Japanese artists who had revived
the traditional art of the
woodblock print for a new era.
Fresh Impressions: Early
Modern Japanese Prints reassembles
and reinterprets the
1930 show. The museum owns
all but five of the 343 prints
displayed in the exhibition,
most of them donated by local
business leader H.D. Bennett
in 1939. Fresh Impressions
stresses the importance of the
early 20th-century resurgence
of woodblock printmaking in
Japan—known as the shin
hanga (“new prints”) movement
that combined traditional
technique with Western inspiration,
and showcases the museum’s
role in popularizing the
genre in the United States.
Also shown will be Japanese
kimono and kabuki costumes,
swords and armor.
Ebb & Flow: Cross-Cultural
Prints–October 11
through January 5, Works on
Paper Gallery. The exhibition
explores the global influence
of Japanese printmaking in the
20th century. Highlighting the
exchange of ideas between
Eastern and Western cultures,
the exhibition consists of approximately
60 works from
the TMA collection and loans
from other institutions.
Continuing Exhibition
Perry’s Victory: The Battle
of Lake Erie, through November
10, Galleries 28 and
29. Perry’s Victory: The Battle
of Lake Erie commemorates
the 200th anniversary of
the Battle of Lake Erie, one of
the largest naval battles of the
War of 1812. The exhibition
features paintings, prints,
sculptures, artifacts, letters
and music, on loan and from
the museum’s collection, that
recount the historic battle.
One of the prominent works
on view will be the heroically
scaled painting Perry’s Victory
on Lake Erie by marine
painter Thomas Birch. This
work depicts a critical moment
just before the surrender
of Great Britain’s Royal Navy.
The naval engagement, led by
Commander Oliver Hazard
Perry in September 1813, was
a watershed moment in which
the Americans reclaimed the
lake and Perry became a national
hero.
Community Gallery
The Art of Japanese
Fashion, through December
27. Garments created by community
artists who were challenged
to create style
informed by the Japanese aesthetic
are displayed in this exhibition,
which culminates
with a TMA Japanese fashion
runway show on December
27.
Eastern Inspiration,
through January 4. Emulating
the rich yet subtle colors of
Japanese prints and bold patterns
of kimono, works of art
created by community participants
emphasize that it doesn’t
matter what life challenges
one faces, as making art connects
cultures and inspires
beauty.
Springfield Devils run past Bulldogs, 38-6
By Michael Krieger
The Springfield Blue Devils
controlled the line of
scrimmage and powered their
way past the Rossford Bulldogs,
38-6 last Friday night at
Jackson-Ferguson Stadium.
It was the Bulldogs’ first
loss of the season and
dropped their record to 2-1.
The bigger Springfield
team, led by running back
Elijah Todd, amassed 360
yards rushing to Rossford’s
37.
The Bulldogs found no
running room and had difficulty
getting their up-tempo
offense to move the ball, especially
in the first half.
“We knew that Springfield
was a talented team,” said
Coach Todd Drusback after
the loss. “They have speed to
stretch you out and good personnel
up front, which makes
them very tough to defend.”
The Blue Devils opened
the scoring early in the first
quarter on a six-play drive
that covered 80 yards and was
capped off with a 20-yard
“I could never have done it on my own
without Hospice of Northwest Ohio.”
“I wasn’t familiar with watching somebody you love pass away.
I felt a weight had been lifted off my shoulders when Hospice of
Northwest Ohio got involved because I had no idea what I was
doing, and they explained everything to me.”
– April, daughter of a Hospice of Northwest Ohio patient

scamper by Todd.
Springfield then added to
the margin on their very next
possession with a 28- yard
pass to Navada Parker from
Sean Seymour tipping the
score 14-0 in favor of the visitors.
The hometown Bulldogs
penetrated to the Springfield
26-yard line at the start of the
second quarter, but on fourth
and nine, sophomore quarterback
Kyle Sherman was intercepted.
The Springfield drive that
followed ended with a sevenyard
scoring pass from Seymour
to Tevin Stuart.
After sacking Sherman to
stop another potential Rossford
threat, the Blue Devils
regained possession and
added a 27-yard field goal to
lead 24-0 at the intermission.
Rossford opened the second
half by recovering a
Springfield fumble on its own
23 yard line.
On the next play, running
back Eric Davis broke free
and streaked down the sidelines
81 yards for an apparent
Bulldog touchdown. But the
score was waived off after a
penalty, which brought the
ball back to the Blue Devil
49-yard line.
A Springfield pass interference
call kept the Bulldog
drive moving, and Sherman
ran for a first down inside the
10-yard line.
On the next play he connected
on a 10-yard pass to
Noah Asmus for the only
Rossford score of the
evening.
Springfield intercepted the
two-point conversion attempt
and led 24-6 at the end of the
third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter
Springfield erupted again for
two quick touchdowns, one
an 11-yard run by Todd and a
67-yard dash by Aren Harris
to build the lead to 38-6.
Rossford’s only other
threat came in the middle of
the fourth when senior linebacker
Ryan Reed picked off
a Seymour pass and ran it
back 27 yards to the Springfield
41-yard line.
The Bulldogs then drove
to the Blue Devil 19 on a broken
play where Sherman
picked up the ball and ran for
the first down. But this drive
soon stalled, and Springfield
took over on downs. From
that point on, the Blue Devils
ran out the clock and earned
their second win of the season.
In spite of the loss, Coach
Drusback continues to look
for positives in his young
team’s effort.
He was proud of their resilience,
especially in the
third quarter because they
kept fighting.
“We hung in there for the
most part,” said Drusback,
“but we squandered some opportunities.
We just need to
learn from this and continue
to get better so we can get
ready for Genoa.”
The Bulldogs will face
Genoa, Friday, September 20,
at home at 7 p.m. as they look
to get back on the winning
track.
