IRON THE REPAIR OF WROUGHT AND CAST IRONWORK<br />

Bear in mind that a foundry usually will not install the<br />

ironwork that it produces – a separate blacksmith is<br />

generally required to do this work. A foundry will <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

subcontract this work. Equally, many blacksmiths will<br />

source castings on behalf <strong>of</strong> the client.<br />

GENERAL CONTRACTORS AND<br />

SUBCONTRACTING<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are many firms that specialise in the<br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> metalwork, particularly high-status or<br />

large-scale items. Before placing a contract, it is<br />

important to establish whether a firm has the<br />

appropriate in-house skills or can subcontract suitablyexperienced<br />

craftspeople such as blacksmiths where<br />

required. Examples <strong>of</strong> previous projects should be<br />

sought <strong>and</strong> the projects visited in person if possible. In<br />

the case <strong>of</strong> ironwork, it is not sufficient to rely on<br />

photographs when assessing the quality <strong>of</strong> previous<br />

work. Detailing such as joints, fixings <strong>and</strong> how well the<br />

paint has been applied need to be assessed on site.<br />

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES<br />

For larger projects, such as the repair <strong>of</strong> fountains <strong>and</strong><br />

b<strong>and</strong>st<strong>and</strong>s, or where the repair to ironwork will<br />

coincide with repairs to other parts <strong>of</strong> a building, the<br />

services <strong>of</strong> an appropriately-qualified <strong>and</strong> experienced<br />

architect or similar pr<strong>of</strong>essional are recommended to<br />

co-ordinate <strong>and</strong> oversee work. Where works are to<br />

structural elements such as beams, trusses, or columns,<br />

the advice <strong>of</strong> a suitably-qualified structural engineer<br />

should be sought.<br />

Surrounding materials such as stone, brick or timber<br />

should also be considered at this stage so that<br />

measures can be put in place for their protection, <strong>and</strong><br />

any necessary repair work can be programmed. If<br />

sections <strong>of</strong> stone need to be replaced or indented,<br />

time may need to be built into the repair programme<br />

to allow for the ordering <strong>and</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> the new<br />

stone. Colour-coded or annotated drawings <strong>and</strong><br />

photographs are a useful <strong>and</strong> clear way <strong>of</strong> showing<br />

where <strong>and</strong> what type <strong>of</strong> repair work is proposed. A<br />

record <strong>of</strong> the condition, position, <strong>and</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong><br />

ironwork prior to intervention or dismantling is<br />

invaluable <strong>and</strong> should be considered essential for<br />

large-scale or ornate ironwork. Where ironwork is to be<br />

dismantled, every element should be numbered using<br />

brass or aluminium tags that correspond to a<br />

numbered drawing <strong>of</strong> the ironwork so that every<br />

element can be accurately reinstated in its original<br />

location.<br />

For domestic-scaled ironwork such as railings, the<br />

contractor should be able to produce a simple<br />

measured drawing <strong>and</strong> photographic survey. <strong>The</strong><br />

recording <strong>and</strong> assessment <strong>of</strong> larger or more complex<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> ironwork will require the services <strong>of</strong> a<br />

suitably qualified <strong>and</strong> experienced architect, surveyor<br />

or engineer as appropriate, particularly if the ironwork<br />

is performing a structural function.<br />

Assessing <strong>and</strong> recording the<br />

condition <strong>of</strong> ironwork<br />

Before embarking on repairs, the contractor should<br />

assess the ironwork’s condition as this will determine<br />

the degree <strong>of</strong> intervention <strong>and</strong> type <strong>of</strong> repairs<br />

required. <strong>The</strong> ironwork should be photographed to<br />

record its appearance <strong>and</strong> condition before any works<br />

start, <strong>and</strong> should also be measured. An accurate,<br />

measured drawing <strong>of</strong> the ironwork is particularly<br />

important where ironwork is to be removed <strong>of</strong>f-site for<br />

repairs so that it can be accurately reinstated.<br />

Attaching metal tags to ironwork as it is dismantled<br />

(numbered to correspond with a measured survey<br />

drawing) is essential for tracking repairs <strong>and</strong> for<br />

correct reinstatement<br />
