WHAT IF YOU
COULD TASTE
VICTORY JUST
ONE MORE TIME
The last second comeback. The onside
kick. The Hail Mary that took us to state.
That’s high school football in Texas. And
while we can’t go back and replay the
games, we can do what Lone Star football
fans have been doing for 60 years –
we can head to DQ ® for a hot, juicy
Hungr-Buster ® , or a cool, creamy soft
serve cone. It’s family. It’s tradition. It’s the
one place where anytime, in any town, just
for a moment, it’s Friday night in Texas.
And, it’s time for kickoff.
“We have a good core, no doubt about that, but we
have critical spots on the field that we do not know
what we are going to do with, or who is going to play
them, and that right now is our biggest problem.”
Harmony Eagles
The Eagles may just be the team to beat, at least head
coach Shane Wilson thinks they can be.
“We have improved every year since I have been here.
We broke through last year and now our kids and our
coaches want more.”
To get more, the Eagles won’t have much catching up
to do; Harmony returns the most starters on offense (9)
and defense (10) in the district.
“This is the most we have had coming back since I have
been here, and we don’t have to re-teach a whole lot
to the kids.”
Anchoring the Eagles season will be one of the most
dominant players in the district, linebacker Kolby
Hogan. “Kolby is the best we have, and with him and
Colton (Bunn) and Jonathan (Hanson) we have a heck
of a nucleus on defense.”
Hogan stole the show for Harmony last season. The
D-1 prospect was a star, leading the district in tackles,
with a whopping 142 take-downs. But he is not alone.
“We have a bunch of guys who can just flat play, both on
offense and defense and I have no reason to think that
New Diana Eagles
The Eagles got a glimpse, and now they want more.
In year one under Roger Adams, New Diana was a
dismal 1-5 going into the final stretch of the season.
Then something clicked.
“We finished 3-1 and got a good taste of how to win,
but not making the playoffs after playing well to end
the year, it puts a bad taste in everyone’s mouth,” said
Adams.
That taste may be easily washed away, when Adams
looks out on the field, he will see a lot of familiar faces,
seven on offense and eight on defense return for the
Eagles.
Two of the standouts will be in the backfield as Kyle Ray
Hendricks and Beau Brewer return to the backfield.
“We can run the ball,” said Adams, “that is what we want
to do, and we are going to do it with those guys.”
The Eagles old-school approach with the wing-t offense
allows them to take advantage of their speed up front.
“We are not the biggest team, but with the way we run
our offense, we do not ask players to go one on one, so
we use the system we have to offset our lack of size.”
we will be much better than last year.”
The Eagles will have plenty of fire power back on
the offensive side as well, with Bunn stepping in a
quarterback and Luke Laminack back to carry the
running back load.
And don’t mess with the linemen alongside Hanson will
step in three returning big men to the Harmony front
lines.
“This is my first year that we have brought back linemen.
In the first years we always had senior heavy lines, and
now we bring back 4 of 5; we should be dominant up
front.”
The Eagles won’t be lacking on defense, as Beau
Brewer is back to lead the charge. The leading tackler
from last year will be joined by other starters Hunter
Covin and Jacob Witt. “Beau is one of the good ones,
but as a safety, when he leads the team in tackles, then
something might be wrong, so we have to get the other
guys to step up.”
They may be small, but they are certainly strong.
“We have four offensive linemen that are over 300
pounds on the bench press and we have several guys
who are over 250. With our offense and our system, we
should be able to do some damage this year.”
