Palestine Wildcats
The Wildcats dropped to 3-7 last season, their first
season under longtime defensive coordinator turned
head coach Booker T. Bowie.
Palestine has five starters back on offense, including
quarterback Olin Terry. Terry’s a three-year starter for
the Wildcats, and picked as the preseason offensive
Most Valuable Player of the year.
“Being a senior,” Bowie said of his quarterback, “he’s
familiar with the offense and the personnel. We like the
way the kids follow him. We’ll also have three of our
four wide receivers back for him for throw to.”
Terry will also have a returning weapon lining up
behind him, with junior Terrance Simon at tailback.
“He was the newcomer of the year as a sophomore,”
Bowie said. “He’s really grown during the offseason in
his size and speed.”
The Wildcats also bring back four defensive starters,
“He’s come a long way,” Bowie said of his six-two, two
hundred and eighteen pound senior. “He’s worked
hard in the offseason and in the weight room.”
“I’ve always felt like your linebackers should be the
leaders of your defense, and Sam’s that kind of player
for us.”
Wren will be joined by defensive lineman Michael
Walker. At six feet and three hundred and ten pounds,
Bowie said Walker will play all over the line.
The smell of the grass. The roar of the crowd.
The weight of the cold December air. That’s
high school football in Texas. And while we
Westwood Panthers
It was another benchmark season for the Panthers,
as Westwood followed their first playoff win in 2007
with their first ever back-to-back playoff appearances
in 2008.
“The kids understand what we’re trying to do,”
Westwood head coach Kevin Anderson said. “With
this district championship, the expectations are really
getting there for us to be in the playoffs every year.
We’re getting more kids out every year that want to
be a part of it.”
Westwood went 6-5 last season, and return four
starters on offense. Junior Tevin Watson will be back
at quarterback, after a sophomore season that saw
him throw for more than a thousand yards and win the
district’s offensive Newcomer of the Year award.
“Last year, I didn’t want to have too high of expectations
for him as a sophomore,” Anderson said, “but he came
through with flying colors. We can really open up the
offense now that he’s got a year under his belt.”
Watson will have a pair of all-district seniors returning
at wide receiver in Cameron Shead and Domanick
Turner.
“Turner’s a kid that’s not big,” Anderson said, “but he’s
big on the field. He plays big.”
Anderson said one of the two seniors also might see
some time at running back. Junior Dustin Campbell
also returns on the line.
Defensively, the Panthers bring back five starters,
including junior defensive end Aaron Stanhope.
“He’s just getting bigger and better,” Anderson said.
“His father was an offensive lineman at Texas Tech, so
he’s got the genes.”
Senior Shaun Anderson will return at tackle and
Rodney Watson will move from defensive tackle to
defensive end for his senior season. The secondary
is set with Bruce Lyman and Nick Morrow returning.
However, the Panthers have some major holes to fill
at linebacker.
“I graduated a three-year starter, and two two-year
starters at linebacker, “ Anderson said. “We’ll need
someone to step up.”
