I’m a retired deputy U.S. Marshall and my
passion since I was a kid has been martial arts.
Both of my ACLs were torn and I had a lot of
pain in my knees. In fact, I couldn’t do most of
the martial arts moves without literally falling
down. Dr. Hobbs, my orthopaedic surgeon, was
phenomenal. The surgery, nursing care and
rehab at Trinity Mother Frances were terrific.
I was back on the mats in just four months. I have
my life back. I’m able to do what I love again.
Marshall Mavericks
A playoff team the last two seasons, the Marshall
Mavericks survived 13-4A in 2008. It will be a tough
test to do so again in 2009. The Mavericks lost 12
starters, but do return several experienced seniors.
Mount Pleasant Tigers
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that last season’s 3-7
record was a disappointment for the Mount Pleasant
Tigers. In fact, Head Coach Jimmy Thompson would
most likely agree.
“We have to find ways to win games,” said Thompson,
“I think we found ways to lose games last year.”
A different mindset might be the key to improving upon
last season. Coach Thompson wants his team to focus
not only on the physical game, but also the mental.
“We let a couple of games get away from us. We
have to be the team that finds a way to win, and that’ll
come through with mental and physical toughness,”
explained Thompson.
It looks to be another tough season for the Tigers. They
have only four players on offense and four players on
defense returning to the starting lineup, and there is a
question on who will start at quarterback.
Right now, it’s a battle between Coach Thompson’s
son Cash and Stephen Julian. Both players started
at linebacker last season, but Thompson is currently
leaning toward playing his son at QB.
“I think he’ll bring the mental toughness to the field, as
well as confidence amongst the team,” said Thompson.
Coach Thompson also said that this team will have a
different style of play compared to previous seasons.
“We’re going to be a different type of team this
season,” said Thompson, “We’ll run at you and gain 3
or 4 yards, and then run at you again.”
Although the Tigers will be tested this next season,
Coach Thompson is confident in his players rising to
the occasion. “You know we’ll have some hard-nosed
players.”
