SAM WOODY’S CABIN<br />
For a century and a half, Sam Woody’s cabin s<strong>to</strong>od guard<br />
along Deep Creek, representing one of the first structures<br />
<strong>to</strong> be built in <strong>Wise</strong> <strong>County</strong>. In Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2006, it was relocated<br />
and dedicated at its new home on the <strong>Wise</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
Heritage Museum lawn.<br />
Woody, a native of Tennessee, built the home in 1854<br />
with the help of friends and family. The construction materials<br />
consisted of wood from trees located in the immediate<br />
area, and the cabin was finished in one day.<br />
The cabin was frequented by frontier travelers passing<br />
through the area and was a meeting place for trade with<br />
Native Americans. Woody guarded pioneer settlements as<br />
part of a Ranger unit and served in the Confederate Army<br />
during the Civil War.<br />
The cabin became a recorded Texas His<strong>to</strong>ric Landmark in<br />
1970.<br />
Sam Woody’s cabin is located in front of the <strong>Wise</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
Heritage Museum, 1602 S. Trinity St., in Decatur.<br />
