DECATUR
Petrified (continued)
ty in order to attract customers. He
athered petrified wood from Alvord
nd Bridgeport and applied it to the
xterior of the station and the cabins.
e also expanded the Lunchroom and
aced it with petrified wood.
“In the old days, every station had it’s
wn personality,” Jim said. “Presumbly,
that’s why they put the petrified
ood around it. The most unique
lace got the most business.”
Bonnie and Clyde were rumored to
ave stayed in the Texas Tourist Court
ust a few months before they were
illed in May 1934.
In the 1950s, the building was
rapped in bright neon lights, further
nticing people to visit the cabins and
afe, along with filling their tank with
as.
“It must have been quite a sight coming
in from Fort Worth,” Nancy said.
The station survived the rationing
of gasoline during World War II
in part because Nolan recapped tires
at the station. Rubber was a valuable
resource during the war, and the
Petrified Wood Station was one of the
only locations in Decatur to have tires
recapped.
With Nolan’s retirement came the
closing of the store, which Jim and
Nancy remodeled as a personal office.
The cabins are used for commercial
space. The cafe closed for a couple of
years but is now open as Whistle Stop
Cafe.
“There’s not a day that goes by that
people don’t stop and take pictures,”
Jim said. “This may be the most photographed
place in Wise County.”
