in from Fort Worth,” Nancy said.
The station survived the rationing
of gasoline during World War II
in part because Nolan recapped tires
at the station. Rubber was a valuable
resource during the war, and the
Petrified Wood Station was one of the
only locations in Decatur to have tires
recapped.
With Nolan’s retirement came the
closing of the store, which Jim and
Nancy remodeled as a personal office.
The cabins are used for commercial
space. The cafe closed for a couple of
years but is now open as Whistle Stop
Cafe.
“There’s not a day that goes by that
people don’t stop and take pictures,”
Jim said. “This may be the most photographed
place in Wise County.”
