WISE COUNTY Festivals (continued) BRIDGEPORT Butterfield Stage Days The second weekend in May the city of Bridgeport celebrates the town’s reason for existence — the Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach. A bridge was built in order for this stagecoach to cross the Trinity River, thus initiating the establishment of the city of Bridgeport. Events include: • carnival rides and booths • vendors • a parade • a PRCA rodeo Coal Miner Heritage Festival In celebration of the city’s heritage, the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce and Bridgeport Historical Society co-sponsor the annual Coal Miner’s Days Festival in September. This one-day event includes: • live entertainment • a coal mining display • antique tools • a blacksmith • arts and crafts • food booths • downtown vendors CHICO Community Volunteer Fire Department Chili Supper and Annual Barbecue The chili supper is held the second Saturday in February, and the annual barbecue is held the second Saturday in June. These events serve as a fundraisers for the volunteer fire department. Events include: • food • live entertainment DECATUR Main Street Easter Event Decatur Main Street sponsors this Easter celebration the Saturday before Easter. The one-day event includes: • an egg hunt at the First United Methodist Church playground • a fun jump • face painting • a petting zoo • train rides • pictures with the Easter Bunny Chisholm Trail Days Reviving an event that started in the ‘70s at the square but moved to the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds before returning to the square five years ago, Chisholm Trail Days celebrate western heritage. This one-day event includes: • a petting zoo • a fun jump • train, pony, hay and stagecoach rides • kids games • craft vendors • cowboy poetry • a chuckwagon exhibit • gunfighters • homemade ice cream contest • kids stickhorse rodeo • fiddle competition • hamburger supper • live entertainment GREENWOOD Homecoming The first Sunday in June, the Greenwood community from near and far gathers for fellowship and food. The event includes: • meal after church • new officer election Greenwood Fall Festival The annual Greenwood Fall Festival is held the second Saturday in October with proceeds benefitting the Wise County Extension Agency and Greenwood 4-H. The one-day event includes: • a parade • children’s games • craft booths • game booths • food booths Community Thanksgiving Lunch The Friday before Thanksgiving Greenwood community members gather at the Greenwood Fire Hall for a lunch feast. NEWARK Cruisin’ Days The third Saturday in October the Ladies Auxiliary hosts the Newark Cruisin’ Days with proceeds benefiting the Newark Fire Department. This one-day event includes: • a kick-off parade • games • booths • concessions • Mr. and Ms. Cruisin’ Days pageant • a cake auction • a dance PARADISE Main Street Festival The Paradise Historical Society sponsors the festival the last Saturday in September to raise funds for the Veterans Memorial Park, located in Paradise’s downtown park. This one-day event includes: • vendors • food booths • an auction • a quilt show • live music RHOME Pioneer Days In either May or June of each year, the Rhome Volunteer Fire Department Support Brigade organizes the Rhome Pioneer Days at the fire station to benefit the fire department. This two-day event includes: • a parade featuring antique cars and firetrucks • craft and vendor booths • entertainment • bounce house and kids’ games • briskets sold by the fire department 64
