ATV Park
The city of Bridgeport is taking steps to make Northwest Park a retreat for locals, as well
as a destination for people from the surrounding areas.
The park is expected to attract visitors from other counties throughout the Dallas/Fort
Worth Metroplex and provide what Bridgeport officials call “a huge economic boom” for
the city, said Ryan Nolting, director of parks and recreation.
The park, located at 2962 S. Highway 101, includes an
ATV and hiking park and a youth athletic complex for softball,
baseball, soccer and football fields is planned. New
Wave Paddle Sports is working with the Bridgeport Economic
Development Corporation to purchase a portion of
the park and construct a rafting, kayaking and canoeing
park.
Currently, the city is hosting trail days to build trails
throughout the 300-acre ATV park and hiking trail and has
hosted several events. The city plans to construct a gatehouse
by the end of the year.
“The off-road vehicle portion of the park (for ATV’s and
jeeps) is a sure thing that will be available to people,”
Nolting said, adding that trails are currently under construction.
City officials also want to include a place for
overnight camping.
City officials first began discussing the idea for such a
park four years ago. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
provided the city with a grant to help fund the park.
“More hotels will have to come to Bridgeport once the
park is built here and that’s because there will be sports
tournaments at the complex. Meanwhile, more people
will also be eating at our restaurants,” Nolting said.
People throughout Wise County and surrounding areas
have a lot of enthusiasm for the park, Nolting said.
“We’ve had trail work days where volunteer groups have
come out from as far away as Sherman and Wichita Falls
to help us build our trails. More than 90 people came one
weekend to help us. I think it’s safe to say that there are a
lot of North Texans wanting these trails,” Nolting said.
