The Bridgeport Main Street
program has enjoyed many highs
over the last few years. In 2007,
Bridgeport was named a Texas
Main Street City and in October
the city was one of 59 Texas cities
added to the National Main Street
City list.
“Main Street fosters the idea that
the preservation of our historic
buildings is important, but that
has to go hand in hand with viable,
successful retail,” said Angie
Tyson, Bridgeport Main Street
manager. “You can buy a toaster,
you can get your boots fixed, you
can get your hair cut and you can
get glass etching downtown.”
Downtown Bridgeport storefronts
feature florists displays, clothing
stores, cafes and gift shops. Two
gyms are also located in downtown.
“There’s more here than people
know,” Tyson said. “The merchants
have to provide the goods and services
that the community needs.
I’ve seen downtown merchants trying
to do that.”
Along with the shopping available,
downtown Bridgeport is the
stage for various events throughout
the year. Events include:
• Oct. 3 – Coal Miners Heritage
Festival
• Oct. 31 – Trick or Treat and costume
parade on Halsell
• November — Art Walk
• Dec. 12 – Home for the Holidays:
Pictures with Santa, merchant
open houses, lighted Christmas
parade
• Feb. 14 – Hearts and Flowers
on Halsell Valentines dinner
• Monthly Bridgeport Box Office
movies in downtown – during the
cold months movies are shown
at the Bridgeport Stage and on
Halsell Street during the warm
months.
