Nasojejunal tube: A soft feeding tube inserted through<br />

the nasal passages into the small bowel. It is placed by<br />

using an x-ray monitor to guide the tube.<br />

Nasopharynx: The upper part of the pharynx continuous<br />

with the nasal passages. 1<br />

Neck dissection: Surgery to remove lymph nodes and<br />

other tissues in the neck. 8<br />

Neoplasia: Abnormal cell growth resulting in formation<br />

of either benign, precancerous or cancerous tumors.<br />

Neuroblastoma: Cancer that arises in immature nerve<br />

cells and affects mostly infants and children. 4<br />

Neutropenia: Low neutrophil (poly) count. 2<br />

Neutrophil: Type of white blood cell; also called a<br />

poly; granulocyte; the body’s primary defense against<br />

harmful bacteria. 2<br />

Nevi: A congenital or acquired usually highly pigmented<br />

area on the skin that is either flat or raised, such<br />

as a mole. 1<br />

Non-alcoholic steato hepatitis (NASH): A common,<br />

often silent, liver disease. It resembles alcoholic liver<br />

disease, but occurs in people who drink little or no<br />

alcohol. The major feature is fat in the liver, along with<br />

inflammation and damage. NASH can be severe and<br />

can lead to cirrhosis, in which the liver is permanently<br />

damaged, scarred, and no longer able to work properly. 7<br />

Odynophagia: Pain produced by swallowing. 1<br />

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): An OGTT is a<br />

series of blood glucose tests. Blood samples for fasting<br />

glucose and insulin are collected; then the patient drinks<br />

a standard amount of a glucose solution to challenge his
