<strong>Fanconi</strong> <strong>Anemia</strong>: Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management<br />

deficiency of the sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone)<br />

and halts normal sexual maturation. 5<br />

Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD): A complication of<br />

bone marrow transplantation which occurs when donor<br />

T-cells attack the patient’s cells. GvHD is more likely<br />

to occur when there is HLA mismatching. GvHD is<br />

classified in stages from Grade I (minor) to Grade IV<br />

(extremely serious). 2<br />

Granulocyte: Type of white blood cell. It is also called<br />

neutrophil or polymorphonuclear leukocyte (poly),<br />

which is the infection-fighting cell.<br />

Gynecomastia: The development of large breasts in<br />

males. Gynecomastia during puberty is not uncommon<br />

and usually goes away over a period of months. 5<br />

H2-antagonists: Medicines that help decrease stomach<br />

acid. 5<br />

Hematocrit: Ratio of red blood cells to plasma in the<br />

blood; portion of the blood’s total volume that is made<br />

up of red blood cells. 2<br />

Hematopoiesis: The formation and development of<br />

blood cells. 2<br />

Hematopoietic growth factors: See Colony stimulating<br />

factors.<br />

Hemochromatosis (aka iron overload): Occurs when<br />

too much iron builds up in the liver. This leads to liver<br />

enlargement. In <strong>Fanconi</strong> anemia, this is usually caused<br />

from ineffective blood production, abnormal iron<br />

absorption, or receiving a large number of blood transfusions,<br />

which boost iron levels.<br />

Hemodynamic: Relating to or functioning in the<br />

mechanics of blood circulation. 1
