<strong>Fanconi</strong> <strong>Anemia</strong>: Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management<br />

Dorsal: Being or located near, on, or toward the back or<br />

posterior part of the human body. 1<br />

Dual energy absorptiometry (DXA or DXA-scan):<br />

The primary test used to identify osteoporosis and low<br />

bone mass. It uses a low energy x-ray to evaluate bone<br />

density in the hip and/or spine and sometimes the wrist.<br />

Dyslipidemia: A disorder characterized by high blood<br />

cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. A lipid disorder<br />

increases the risk for atherosclerosis and heart<br />

disease. 5<br />

Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing. 5<br />

Dysplasia: A deleterious change in the microscopic<br />

appearance of cells. Can suggest early stages of progression<br />

to cancer.<br />

Ectopic: Occurring in an abnormal position, such as a<br />

pregnancy occurring in a Fallopian tube instead of in<br />

the uterus. 1<br />

Encopresis: The voluntary or involuntary passage of<br />

stools in a child over age four, which causes the soiling<br />

of clothes. 5<br />

Endoscope: A medical device consisting of a camera<br />

mounted on a flexible tube. Small instruments can be<br />

used to take samples of suspicious tissues through the<br />

endoscope. In gastrointestinal (digestive tract) endoscopy,<br />

this device is inserted through the mouth or anus. 5<br />

Enteral alimentation: Tube feeding whereby liquid<br />

food is given through a tube into the stomach or small<br />

bowel. 12<br />

Eosinophil (EOS): A type of white blood cell; a type of<br />

granulocyte. 2
