hypopharynx, and larynx.<br />

Maintain good oral hygiene.<br />

Avoid all alcohol, including mouthwashes<br />

that contain alcohol, and avoid<br />

tobacco use, including second-hand<br />

smoke.<br />

Consider an HPV vaccination, beginning<br />

at age nine for both boys and girls, to<br />

possibly prevent squamous cell carcinoma<br />

associated with the HPV virus (see<br />

Chapter 13).<br />

• Treatment and surveillance:<br />

Suspicious lesions should be biopsied<br />

immediately. If a premalignant lesion is<br />

found, examinations should increase to<br />

every two to three months, at the physician’s<br />

discretion. Malignant lesions must<br />

be treated immediately.<br />

Aggressive monitoring by the surgeon<br />

is an absolute must for those already<br />

▫▫<br />

Dental Care<br />

treated for head and neck cancer.<br />

Those already treated for head and neck<br />

cancer should obtain an annual chest<br />

• Regular dental examinations: All FA patients<br />

should have regular dental examinations by a<br />

dental practitioner versed in FA cancer risks.<br />

The examination should include a thorough<br />

screening for possible oral cancer.<br />

• Post-transplant: Because of the risk of bacteremia,<br />

patients should not have dental cleaning,<br />

extraction or other invasive procedures
