Middle School Update
September 2, 2011
Schedule for the first week of school: Please read carefully the information which follows.
There were some changes to the schedule for Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September
7. These have been highlighted in yellow. Please note the dismissal times for Wednesday,
September 7 and the practice schedule for Bantam football on Tuesday, September 6,
Wednesday, September 7, and Friday, September 9.
Tuesday, September 6 ~ Orientation Day: All Middle School students are required to attend
Orientation Day on September 6; however, the times vary according to the grade level and whether
or not the student is new to the school or a returning student. Read carefully to find out at what time
your son must arrive.
On Orientation Day, Tuesday, September 6, all Grade 7 and 8 students should:
a. Wear summer or full uniform
b. Bring the Jungle Sport consent form for the activity that Tuesday and Wednesday,
September 6&7 unless it has already been brought to the Front Office, emailed, faxed
(514) 931-6118, or mailed (to the attention of Ms. Marlita Manal) and received
already. A copy is attached to this email in case you have lost track of the original
email. It is also on the website.
c. Bring the off-site consent form (2-sided or 2 pages, both filled in) for the Orientation
Trip on Thursday and Friday, September 8&9. A copy is attached to this email in case
you have lost track of the original email. It is also on the website.
d. Bring physical education uniform (SHS shorts, SHS T-shirt, white socks and running
shoes) as they will need it for the Jungle Sport activity.
e. Bring the photo showing “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”(see item #3 under
News/Information)
f. Bring a pencil or a pen.
g. Bring his computer if he has not already brought it in during August to be reimaged
(see item #2 in News/Information in the August Middle School Update)
h. DO NOT bring school supplies on Tuesday. These should be brought in on
Wednesday, September 7.
Who comes at what time
9:00 a.m. - All Grade 7 and 8 students who are new to Selwyn House (students who did
not attend Selwyn House in Grade 6 or 7) should arrive for 9:00 a.m. in the Rossy Agora in the
Speirs Building. The students will meet with their English/history teachers until 10:00. These Grade 7
and 8 students will then join with the returning Grade 7 and 8 students in the Rossy Agora for an
orientation session.
10:00 a.m. - All Grade 7 and 8 students who are not new to Selwyn House (students who
attended Grade 6 and 7 at Selwyn House) will meet with the new students in the Rossy Agora at this
time. After this, all students will meet with Ms. Manning and their teachers for a variety of activities,
including Jungle Sport. Dismissal for Grade 8 will be at 12:30 except for those boys who are
writing supplemental exams in mathematics, those boys who are in Bantam Football, and those

oys who are in Bantam soccer. The boys who are staying for tests, football or soccer will have
lunch in Coristine Hall at 12:30. The boys in football will then get their football equipment, have a
practice at Forbes Field and will return to Selwyn at approximately 5:00 p.m. The boys in soccer can
have their lunch at 12:30 and then attend a soccer practice from 1:00-2:30 at Westmount Junior Field,
arriving back at SHS at 2:45. The students who are writing math exams will begin at 1:00 and should
finish by 2:30. This will enable those who have football practice to attend it, as the bus for Forbes
Field will depart at 2:45.
All Grade 7 students will stay for lunch, receive their locker numbers and combinations, change into
physical education clothing and then participate in Jungle Sport. They will change back into their
uniforms, and dismissal will be at 2:45.
Wednesday, September 7 is regular school hours (8:15 to 2:45) for Grade 8. Grade 7 will
have an extended day (8:15-4:00) because they will be engaged in Jungle Sport from 2:45 to 3:45
with dismissal at 4:00. On this day, students should:
a) Arrive around 8:00 so that they have time to go to their lockers before Period one,
which begins at 8:15.
b) Wear summer or full uniform.
c) Bring their physical education uniform if they took it home on Tuesday.
d) Bring their school supplies and put them in their locker before 8:15.
On this day, students will be hearing a motivational speaker and completing workshops on how
to be a successful student.
Grade 8 students in bantam football will have a practice from 3:00 to 5:00 at WAG
(Westmount Athletic Grounds).
On Thursday, September 8 to Friday, September 9, there will be a Middle School overnight
outing. A letter regarding the trip and an off-site consent form are attached to this email. Please
ensure that your son’s off-site consent form is returned by Orientation Day, Tuesday, September
6.
On Friday, September 9 the students in bantam football will have a practice upon their return from
Camp Papillon from 3:00 to 5:00pm at WAG (Westmount Athletic Grounds).
Please make sure that every item of your son’s uniform has been labeled with his name.
Items that are labeled are returned to your son. Unlabelled items languish in the Lost and Found
and can disappear without a trace. It is also a good idea to label major school supply items,
calculators in particular. As the boys all have the same coloured binders for each subject, it is a
good idea if his name is prominently displayed to avoid taking the wrong binder.
Your son will be given a house shirt on Wednesday, September 7. Please make sure that he
wears it on Thursday. We expect all the boys to be wearing their house shirts for our activities on
Thursday. This will count as one of the two T-shirts he was requested to have for the trip. He can
wear this one and bring a second one in case it is too wet or dirty to wear.
Please have your son bring a re-useable water bottle on the trip on Thursday and Friday.
This was not on the original list, but it is a good idea so that your son will remain well hydrated.

His name should be on it as he is more than likely to leave it somewhere and forget where he left
it. If his name is on it, we can return it.
Regular academic classes will begin Monday, September 12 on a Week 2 schedule. The
week of September 6-9 is a series of activities and workshops designed to get the student
prepared for a good start to the year.
Have a wonderful Labour Day weekend!
