Textbook: Ammon, Southall, Blair. (2010). Sport Facility Management: Organizing Events<br />

and Mitigating Risks. 2 nd Edition – MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 2 nd EDITION, 2010!<br />

Catalog Description: Designing, planning, and managing public and private sport and other<br />

public assembly facilities.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Objective: To provide students with theory and practical applications related to<br />

design, renovation, programming, managing, financing, and evaluation of sport and other<br />

public assembly facilities.<br />

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:<br />

1. Identify the concepts and principles of facility design, construction, and renovation.<br />

2. Write area and facilities specifications and interpret blueprints.<br />

3. Develop a building diagnosis form relative to purpose and use.<br />

4. Conduct facility and event feasibility studies.<br />

5. Identify and demonstrate area and facility management skills.<br />

6. Develop capital and operating budgets for sports and other public assembly facilities.<br />

7. Identify and apply labor standards and laws pertinent to sport facilities.<br />

8. Interpret equipment needs, purchases, and maintenance.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Requirements:<br />

MAJOR PROJECT : Each student will design or renovate a facility of their choice. In<br />

addition to a brief justification as to why the new construction or renovation is needed, the<br />

following must be included: 1. Develop a needs assessment for your facility, 2. Write a<br />

section of a personnel manual for your facility (what jobs need to be performed for your<br />

facility to function and what are the exact job descriptions for each), 3. Program and equip<br />

the facility., 4. A plan or layout of the facility, produced to scale. See attached sheet for<br />

further details.<br />

EXAMS: Three exams will be given in this class. The format for the exams may consist of<br />

multiple choice, matching, short answer, and/or fill-in type questions. Anything that we<br />

discuss in class could, and will, be on an exam.<br />

FACILITY PRESENTATION: In teams of 3 students will be assigned a facility to research<br />

and present to the class (no written paper required). The 6-8 minute presentations should<br />

incorporate a brief discussion of the facility (history, location) and may, depending on how<br />

you format the presentation, include information such as cost, time to build, seating capacity,<br />

events held, revenue streams, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Presentations will be graded on<br />

thoroughness, creativity, visual aides, etc. Groups are encouraged to practice the<br />

presentation four – six times before presenting to the class. Unorganized presentations will<br />

result in a lower grade.<br />

UNANNOUNCED IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: These assignments will consist of<br />

multiple-choice or essay questions from the assigned readings and in class exercises. In class<br />

assignments that are missed may not be made up. Additionally, often we will have in-class<br />

assignments that will incorporate group projects that will be turned in at the end of class.<br />

CLASS POLICIES:<br />

1. Class begins at 8:00AM and students are expected to be in the classroom at that time.<br />

Any student arriving after 8:00AM will lose 10 points on their in class assignments.<br />

2. A lecture/discussion format will be used throughout the semester. Where applicable,<br />

guest speakers, tours, and videos will also be used. Students are encouraged to ask<br />

questions and make comments during the class session. Frequently we will discuss<br />

current events and other issues related to facilities and sports in general. Keep in<br />

mind that anything discussed in class may/will be found on the exams. Students are<br />

advised to take note of all our discussions.<br />

3. All assignments that are turned in are due in typewritten or computer printed form.<br />

4. Grammar and spelling errors/mistakes within projects will result in a lower<br />

project/assignment grade. Make sure you proofread all your assignments!<br />

5. Each student is required to be present for all exams/assignments/projects. If a student is<br />

absent, only an official university excuse will allow the work to be made-up. All makeup<br />

assignments are due the following class session.<br />

6. Assignments turned in after the due date will receive a 25% reduction in grade for each<br />

day late. Assignments are considered late beginning immediately after they are<br />

collected during the class period they are due.<br />

7. During the semester assignments (due dates, changes in requirements, etc.) will change.<br />

Absence from class does not give the student an excuse for not knowing about any<br />

changes in class material, scheduling, assignments, exams, and other announcements or<br />

activities given in class.<br />

8. Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student found to be cheating in this class would be<br />

dealt with according to university policy.<br />

9. GRADING POLICY: Assignments that meet the requirements will earn a grade of<br />

approximately 75%. In order to earn an A on assignments/projects students are expected<br />

to perform above average.<br />

MAJOR PROJECT GUIDE<br />

Each student will design a facility or renovate an existing facility. The following information may be used as a<br />

guide to assist with this project. Keep in mind this project is worth a major portion of your final grade. THIS<br />

ASSIGNMENT SHOULD BE THOUGHT OF AS A MANUAL RATHER THAN A PAPER!<br />

Written description of facility (Ex. Area - Purpose - Activities - Furnishings, Equipment. (What will occur<br />

in each area) Think of this as a detailed written tour of your facility.<br />
