velopment of electronic braking systems
for trailers. As the leading global manufacturer
of EBS for trailers, WABCO
has to date delivered more than 600,000
Trailer EBS systems as of 10/2007.
WABCO Trailer EBS has become the
industry standard for trailer manufacturers.
Comparison between the Trailer EBS C and D Generation
With the launch of the new Trailer EBS
D Gen eration in 2002, installation costs
were further reduced, and the installation
procedure became easier, leading to com -
ponent and cable cost savings due to:
■ Reduction of system com ponents

function and hardware into the
modulator

valves to be fitted

the tractive unit/trailer interface
Active safety circuit
■ ABS and ALB remain functional and
the vehicle stable during braking,
when the power supply to the stop
light is given during a malfunction
on the ISO 7638 plug connection.
■ An external telematics box can be
con nected to acquire stored position
tracking and operating data. This
feature provides operations with the
opportunity to upgrade fleet management
■ 2S/2M for semitrailers with steering
axles (an inexpensive system with
select low valve).
Brake pad wear indicator
Pad wear indicators for disc brakes have
been used in commercial vehicles for a
number of years. WABCO’s Trailer EBS
D Genera tion is equipped with a brake
wear recorder, which re cords historical
data in the electronic control unit. The last

five brake pads changes are recorded
along with the according mileage and
operating hours of the worn pad. When
the wear limit of a brake pad is reached,
the system warns the driver via an
indicator in the cab – a standard feature
in cars. The WABCO brake pad wear
indicator is compliant with ADR/GGVS.

Roll Stability Support (RSS)
WABCO’s original RSS system for preventing
roll-overs has been well received
by drivers. Comments such as “It's
impressive how the RSS system guarantees
stability in difficult driving situations”
are fequent. Vehicles with 2S/2M systems
and any number of lifting axles can be
equipped with Trailer EBS D Generation.
RSS supports all configurations from
2S/2M through to 4S/3M. It goes without
saying that the vehicles can also be
equipped with steering axles. This ad -
vanced RSS logic control unit adapts to
the actual height of the center of gravity
after a few test braking procedures, and
to the individual right/left thresholds
if the truck has a one-sided load. In
December 2004, RSS will also be available
for drawbar trailers.

Park Release Emergency
Valve (PREV)
This brake valve combines the functions
of a double release valve with those of
a conventional trailer brake valve. The
emergency braking function of the service
braking system remains intact while ABS
and RSS are functioning.
With PREV, the driver does not have to
manually operate the parking brake in the
trailer, it is braked automatically as long
as the air supply pressure is sufficient.
Spring brake-equipped trailers will be
prevented from rolling away if parked,
even in the event of total air lossing the
reservoir.

record the operating data of a trailer.
These data can be used later to analyse
