FOUNDATION PURPOSE 

The Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. was established in 1972 with 

the specific mandate to serve as custodian of contributions from the private 

sector, alumni, friends, industries and foundations; to receive, invest and 

administer funds; to act as trustee; and to exercise the powers of a 

not-for-profit organization under the laws of the State of Georgia. 

The corporation’s purposes are:

To encourage, solicit, receive and administer 

gifts; bequests of property and funds for 

scientific, educational and charitable purposes, 

for the advancement of Fort Valley State 

University and its objectives and purposes. 

To reserve either absolutely, or in trust, for 

FVSU’s objectives and purposes, funds and 

property of all kinds, subject only to any 

limitations or conditions imposed by law or 

the instrument under which received; to sell, 

lease, convey and dispose of any such property 

and to invest and reinvest any proceeds and 

other funds. To deal and expend the principal 

and income for any authorized purposes. To 

act as trustee; and, in general, to exercise any, 

all, and every power, including trust powers, 

which a corporation not for profit organized 

under the laws of Georgia for the foregoing 

purposes can be authorized to exercise.

To promote and support 

education by providing: 

(a) funds which are not provided from public 

sources for use in furthering the education 

and welfare of Fort Valley State University, its 

faculty and students; 

(b) funds to be used in attracting experienced 

and outstanding instructors, educators, and 

scientists to such university; 

(c) educational facilities, including dormitories; 

(d) scholarships, and other activities subject 

to amendment.

To perform acts and expend funds in 

any manner which the board of directors 

determines is beneficial to education and 

the university.

Upon specific approval of the board 

of directors or executive committee, to 

borrow such sums, on the terms and with 

such security, if any, as may be prescribed 

in the approval, but no trust assets may be 

pledged or committed in a manner that 

violates the trust upon which held.

All of the assets and income of the 

Foundation shall be used only for the 

purposes stated above, including the payment 

of incidental expenses. No part of its assets, 

income, funds or property shall inure to the 

benefit of its members, directors, or officers, 

and no part of its activities shall be for the 

carrying on of propaganda or otherwise 

attempting to influence legislation. The 

Foundation shall not participate in, or intervene 

in (including the publishing or distributing of 

statements) any political campaign on behalf 

of any candidate for public office.

In the event of dissolution or other 

termination of the Foundation, title 

to all assets shall vest in Fort Valley State 

University or its successor, to be used 

exclusively for the purpose herein above set 

out, it being intended that no distribution or 

payment shall be made which will impair or 

destroy the tax-exempt status of donations, 

contributions, legacies, bequests or dues 

received by this Foundation, to the extent 

that such tax-exempt status shall be allowed 

under any applicable laws or regulations.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 

Dear Alums and Wildcat Supporters, 

There’s a surge of new energy in Wildcat Country today! Thanks to our hard 

working leadership team, faculty, staff and students, Fort Valley State University 

is poised for a successful and unforgettable academic year. Our campus is 

overflowing with close to 4,000 students and new academic programs. 

We began the 2011 school year in high gear and as the months progress, the 

rapid pace shows no sign of letting up. It’s an exciting time to be a Wildcat! 

Celebrate several milestones with us: FVSU was ranked #9 among the top 

regional public colleges in the south on the 2012 Best Colleges list published 

by U.S. News and World Report. What an accomplishment! 

I am pleased to announce that Fort Valley State University’s sponsored programs 

totaled $17 million in annual funding and $37 million in multi-year awards for 

federal, state and local contracts. Economic growth is the key to our success. A 

study initiated by the Georgia Board of Regents to illustrate the impact of state 

universities in local communities confirmed what we already knew. FVSU is 

the engine that drives economic growth in Peach County. FVSU provided 1,535 

jobs and contributed more than $85 million to the local economy in 2009, 

according to the study. 

Besides the hum created by enrollment growth, there’s a buzz of construction 

and renovation projects on campus. Huntington, Miller and Ohio halls will be 

completed and ready for occupancy in December. Construction costs for their 

renovation total more than $15 million. Academically-strong students deserve 

the best facilities. 

As a historian, I am extremely pleased about a new program in the Department 

of History, Geography, Political Science and Criminal Justice. A new master’s 

degree in history was approved by the Georgia Board of Regents and is now 

accepting registrants. 

I must also acknowledge the latest news from Wildcat Athletics. For the first 

time in the school’s history, four FVSU players were signed as free agents to 

the NFL. Another proud moment for all of us was when Women’s basketball 

coach, Lonnie Bartley, was named to the National Black College Alumni 

Hall of Fame. He is listed with 250 distinguished alumni from historically 

Black colleges and universities. 

Your support drives us to provide the best education, facilities and 

environment for students. We’ve made tremendous strides with enrollment 

growth, sponsored programs, new course offerings and prestigious awards. 

Even so, we are challenged when it comes to providing financial assistance to 

deserving students. We urge you to invest in our new generation of leaders

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN 

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of 

the Fort Valley State University, 

As another glorious winter descends upon Peach County and our academic 

year is underway at FVSU, I am truly humbled while walking the campus 

because I see firsthand the great accomplishments that you, our donors, 

have helped to make possible at our beloved institution. 

As you peruse this year’s annual report, I know you will be pleased to see just 

how your gifts are put to use. The foundation’s primary objective to support 

FVSU’s academic mission is accomplished through ongoing programs, new 

funding initiatives, and of course, student scholarships. 

President Larry E. Rivers must receive applause. In his five-year tenure, the face 

of FVSU has changed. A new housing village, football stadium, a student 

amenities center and SMART classrooms were constructed in that time period 

and Huntington Hall, Miller and Stallworth buildings were preserved and 

restored. Rivers’ vision and leadership abilities coupled with a hardworking, 

dedicated staff combined to increase external funding revenue, double the 

university’s enrollment and produce a #25 ranking among the best historically 

black colleges and universities by U.S. Media Group in the 2010 edition of 

“America’s Best Colleges.” With continued support and contributions, FVSU’s 

achievements will only increase.

We have audited the accompanying 

consolidated statements of financial position 

of Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. 

and Subsidiaries (the Foundation) as of June 

30, 2011 and 2010 and the related consolidated 

statements of activities and cash flows for the 

years then ended. These consolidated financial 

statements are the responsibility of the 

Foundation’s management. Our responsibility 

is to express an opinion on these consolidated 

financial statements based on our audits. 

We conducted our audits in accordance with 

auditing standards generally accepted in the 

United States of America and the standards 

applicable to the financial audits contained in 

Government Auditing Standards, issued by 

the Comptroller General of the United States. 

Those standards require that we plan and perform 

the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about 

whether the consolidated financial statements 

are free of material misstatement. An audit 

includes consideration of internal control over 

financial reporting as a basis for designing 

audit procedures that are appropriate in the 

circumstances, but not for the purpose of 

expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of 

the Foundation’s internal control over financial 

reporting. Accordingly, we express no such 

opinion. An audit also includes examining, on 

a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts 

and disclosures in the consolidated financial 

statements, assessing the accounting principles 

used and significant estimates made by 

management, as well as evaluating the overall 

financial statement presentation. We believe 

that our audits provide a reasonable basis 

for our opinion. 

In our opinion, the consolidated financial 

statements referred to above present fairly, in all 

material respects, the financial position of Fort 

Valley State University Foundation, Inc. and 

Subsidiaries as of June 30, 2011 and 2010 and 

the changes in net assets and cash flows for the 

years then ended in conformity with accounting 

principles generally accepted in the United 

States of America. 

In accordance with Government Auditing 

Standards, we have also issued a report dated 

September 16, 2011 on our consideration 

of Fort Valley State University Foundation, 

Inc.’s internal control over financial reporting 

and our tests of its compliance with certain 

provisions of laws, regulations, contracts, grant 

agreements and other matters. The purpose 

of that report is to describe the scope of our 

testing of internal control over financial 

reporting and compliance and the results of 

that testing, and not to provide an opinion on 

the internal control over financial reporting 

or on compliance. That report is an integral

WAYS TO GIVE to the fvsu foundation, inc. 

Making a financial gift to the Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. ensures that the institution can fulfill its mission. Your gifts provide 

opportunities for students to pursue their career goals, then after matriculation contribute to the global community. A contribution to the 

foundation also provides a special benefit to donors: tax benefits such as deductions for charitable contributions on income tax returns and 

capital gains tax savings when tax time approaches. Future estate tax savings may also result from the gift. 

Donors determine how gifts are administered. When a contribution is not accompanied with specific instructions, it is classified as an 

unrestricted gift and used in the areas of greatest need at Fort Valley State University as determined by the board of directors, the officers 

of the foundation and the university president. To establish special funds, such as a scholarship in the name of a loved one, the foundation 

recommends that a meeting is scheduled between the donor and a foundation representative to determine how the fund will be administered 

and disbursed. Signed documentation that outlines the donor’s wishes is strictly adhered to by the foundation.

a cash contribution. Make a donation 

designated for the university’s area of greatest 

current need. Contribute a large gift for a 

specific purpose, for scholarships, to enhance 

facilities, or support a special activity. Ask us

Matching Gifts 

You or your spouse may work at a company 

that matches its employees’ donations to 

higher education institutions. This program 

offers a great opportunity to double or even 

triple your gift to the university. Each year, 

FVSU benefits from corporate contributions 

initiated by company employees or retirees. 

Memorial Gifts 

Remember a loved one, living or deceased, 

by donating a gift in their name. Often, 

scholarships are established “in memory of” 

an individual to honor them. 

Stocks, Bonds and Other Assets 

Stocks, or other investments, owned for at 

least one year that have increased in value 

become a substantial gift and can be 

donated at a low net cost to you. Appreciated 

assets can be ideal funding sources for 

charitable gifts that provide you (or someone 

you want to support) regular income for life. 

Take a Capital Loss Yourself 

If you own securities worth less now than 

when originally purchased, sell them and 

contribute the proceeds to the FVSU 

Foundation, Inc. Deduct the capital loss on 

your tax return. A tax break is not available 

to the foundation if the securities are 

donated directly to us. 

Life Insurance 

A contribution to the Fort Valley State 

University Foundation from a life insurance 

policy can be made either by delivering an 

assigned ownership of the policy to the 

foundation, or by naming the foundation 

as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of 

the policy. The policy provides a definite, 

large, future gift at a small annual expense, 

and premiums are tax deductible. Another 

way to give is to change the beneficiary of an 

existing policy, if the present beneficiary no 

longer needs protection. The foundation 

can be named as the new beneficiary or 

co-beneficiary. 

Personal Property 

In most cases, a gift of tangible personal 

property, such as a painting, antiques, books, 

artifacts or jewelry is considered a charitable 

deduction. The potential capital tax on the 

property’s appreciation can be avoided. 

Appreciated Property 

It is often advantageous to contribute 

appreciated property rather than cash. 

Securities, homes, land and other assets make 

ideal gifts. By donating gifts of appreciated 

property, you eliminate capital gains tax and 

receive a charitable deduction based on the 

full market value of the gift. 

Outright Bequest 

Name the FVSU Foundation, Inc. as a 

beneficiary in your will and make a gift of cash, 

investments or property from your estate. 

Residual Bequest 

A residual bequest provides that after specific 

bequests are made to named individuals, Fort 

Valley State University receives the “residue” 

or the amount remaining in the estate. 

Codicil 

If you already have a valid, up-to-date will, you 

can have an attorney prepare a codicil to the will 

naming the university as a beneficiary without 

rewriting the entire document. 

WHAT ARE MATCHING 

GIFT COMPANIES 

Thousands of companies and corporate 

foundations in the United States currently 

match their employees’ gifts to nonprofit 

organizations such as universities. 

Under a corporate matching gift program, 

donations made by a company’s eligible 

employee or spouse are matched with 

corporate foundation funds. 

STEP 1 

To initiate a matching gift, a donor fills 

out the company’s matching gift form 

(available through the benefits office) 

and sends it, along with his or her donation, 

to the FVSU Foundation, Inc. 

STEP 2 

The university’s foundation completes 

the form and returns it to the company. 

STEP 3 

The company then sends a check 

to FVSU Foundation, Inc.

Black History Month Scholarship Luncheon 

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is among the most revered and 

quoted leaders in history. The oldest son of the slain civil 

rights leader, Martin Luther King, III drew a record crowd 

during the 24th annual Black History Month Scholarship 

Luncheon in the Health and Physical Education Complex. 

Honored at the event were scholarship recipients LaChrisha 

Baker, an early childhood/special education student with a 

3.9 GPA; D’Aryl Evans, an electronic engineering technology 

student with a 3.8 GPA; and Lakiesha Hampton, a Cooperative 

Developmental Energy Program student, majoring in 

mathematics with a 3.9 GPA. 

BHMSL committee chairs Rufus Green and Charlia Williams 

said they were pleased with the overwhelming support from 

the university and community. 

Ten-year- old Markayla Owens stunned the audience with a 

recitation of the most quoted “I Have A Dream” speech.

Homecoming 2010 

Fort Valley State University donors gave 

Wildcat fans another reason to cheer during 

the 2010 Homecoming game. During the 

halftime show, several checks were presented 

to the FVSU Foundation, Inc.: $10,000 from 

BB&T; $20,000 from the Columbus Alumni 

Association; $20,500 from the 21 st Century 

Agricultural Alumni and $101,000 pledged 

from the Class of 1970. All donations provide 

scholarships for future Wildcats.

Spring Commencement 

More than 250 Wildcats bid farewell to college life during the 70th 

annual Spring Commencement on May 1, 2011. The stands of the 

Health and Physical Education Complex were packed with parents, 

family members and supporters of graduates, waving “Congratulations” 

banners and cheering. 

Students listened to the advice of keynote speaker Gary Black, Georgia 

Commissioner of Agriculture, before FVSU President Larry E. Rivers 

conferred degrees. 

The president also recognized several special groups for their generous 

financial contributions to the institution. FVSU’s Class of 1961 donated 

$25,000 to start a scholarship endowment—the largest donation given 

by a 50th Anniversary Class. “We did a mass mailing to all members 

that graduated in the 1961 class,” said Oscar Jessie, co-chair of the 1961 

FVSC Class Reunion. 

The Kitchens family, represented by Janice and Phyllis Kitchens, also 

gave FVSU’s College of Education an $11,000 donation to start a 

scholarship endowment in memory of Dr. Justine Kitchens, class of 1968.

Transformation of 

the Blue Machine 

Marching Band 

President Larry E. Rivers asked a committee to 

assist with the mission of retooling and rebuilding 

the university’s Blue Machine Marching Band. The 

FVSU student body answered the call with a plan 

of action and a contribution. The Pre-Alumni 

Association donated $1,600 and the FVSU 

Student Government Association contributed 

another $60,000 from their budget. 

Wildcat alumnus Leon Moss pushed for an adopta-band 

member project. Last year, the National 

Alumni Association, Inc. approved the idea and 

formed a committee. During the spring 2010 

commencement, the NAA donated $5,000 towards 

the effort. 

“Our chapter donated five mellophone horns, 

and I donated 14 instruments, 12 trumpets and 

six saxophones valued at $7,000. I saw the need 

and encouraged the chapter to get involved,” says 

Oscar Jessie, Greater Miami Alumni chapter vice 

president and an FVSU 1961 graduate.

Tom Joyner 

School of the Month 

Popular syndicated radio host Tom Joyner shined the 

national spotlight on Fort Valley State University in 

fall 2010. His nonprofit organization, the Tom Joyner 

Foundation, selected FVSU as its October “School of 

the Month”. 

Funds from this initiative helped provide scholarships 

to the following students: Kenny Regis, Terrance 

Tucker, Miles DeWitt, Glorie Chiza, Laith Shannon, 

Dewayne Davis, Jessika Kendrick, Glen Whidy, Bryant 

Collier, Timothy Harvey, Elzery Houston, Bonita 

Hubbard, Gary Walker, Martinique Pinder, Aytena 

Grant, Cornesha Woodard, Randy Jackson, Rico

EXTERNAL FUNDING 

Fueling the Future 

Thanks to Dr. Bharat Singh, Fort Valley State University recently 

received nearly $1 million from the USDA’s National Institute of Food 

and Agriculture agency to research energy crops for the next five years. 

“This is the first time an FVSU researcher has secured a large AFRI 

grant,” said Dr. Govind Kannan, dean of the College of Agriculture, 

Family Sciences and Technology. “There is usually intense competition 

among the major land-grant institutions for AFRI grants, and this 

award to FVSU demonstrates the caliber of our research programs.” 

SAFE Center Grant 

The Macon Kennel Club, an American Kennel Club affiliate, presented 

a check for $4,937.90 to Dr. Oreta Samples, veterinary technologist 

and Dr. Seyedmehdi Mobini, professor and interim head of the 

Department of Veterinary Science for the SAFE Center at its June 

6 meeting on behalf of the AKC Companion Animal Relief Canine

Student Support Services 

$1.9 million in funding through the U.S. Department of Educations’ 

Trio Programs, was awarded to the university to provide opportunities 

for academic development, assist students with basic college 

requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful 

completion of their postsecondary education. Student Support 

Services (SSS) projects also grant aid to current SSS participants who 

are receiving Federal Pell Grants. The grant will fund FVSU’s Student 

Support Services and will be distributed over a five-year period. 

FVSU and Toyota Team Up 

for Diversity Project 

One of America’s leading automakers is helping prepare future 

educators at Fort Valley State University. 

Toyota Motor Company is funding a $500,000, five-year grant 

through yearly subcontracts to FVSU and three high schools, through 

its “Enhancing Diversity in Agricultural Education” program. The 

initiative is designed to recruit and retain minority agricultural 

educators who typically pursue careers in other industries. The grant, 

awarded last year, covers scholarships and travel expenses to 

the annual Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention.

SUCCESS WILDCAT STYLE 

Enormous Growth in 5 Years 

FVSU’s chief executive officer, Dr. Larry Rivers, is a man with 

boundless energy who understood the challenges of the job when he 

became the university’s eighth president five years ago. A budget deficit, 

sagging student enrollment and an insufficient endowment are a few 

of the issues he faced. 

In five short years, many changes have occurred. Before Dr. Rivers’ arrival, 

construction projects only totaled $30 million between 1976 and 2006. Now, 

they have increased to $160 million. New construction projects include 

FVSU’s housing facilities—the Wildcat Commons, the $16.8 million science 

research building, the $9 million Wildcat Stadium and a modern $6 

million student center. Additionally, older buildings such as the Stallworth 

Agricultural Research Building, Ohio, Miller and Huntington halls are 

now under renovation. 

The university has also expanded academic programs to include several 

master’s degrees. The degrees are in the following areas: biotechnology 

and school counselor education. New undergraduate courses are 

in family and consumer science, middle grades and early childhood/ 

special education. 

FVSU also earned the #25 spot among the best historically black colleges 

and universities listed in the 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by 

U.S. News Media Group.

Dorothy Moss Installed as 

New NAA President 

The leader of FVSU’s National Alumni 

Association, Inc. is a 1978 graduate who 

majored in horticulture. Moss is the new 

president of the organization that unites 

alumni chapters from 40 cities across 

the nation. The owner of Accessories and 

Funwear located in Conyers, Ga. was 

officially installed at the 21st Biennial 

National Conference on July 22-25 

in Thomasville, Ga. 

Charles Robinson Recognized as 

an Outstanding Nonprofit Leader 

Charles Robinson, Jr., president and chief 

executive officer of the Sadie G. Mays Health 

& Rehabilitation Center received the 2011 

Revolutions Award for Outstanding Nonprofit 

Leader. Hired by the nursing home as executive 

director in 1977, Robinson transformed the 

center into what it is today, a nationally 

recognized and award winning facility.

Championship Teams 

Football Last season, the Wildcats finished with an 8-3 mark, 

closed the season with a Pioneer Bowl appearance, ranked sixth in the 

NCAA South Region and won national honors as the NCAA Division 

II top defensive team in the nation. Additionally, four FVSU athletes 

were signed as free agents in the NFL. 

Women’s Basketball The Lady Wildcats won the 

2010-11 SIAC Championship title. Under the leadership of charismatic 

and winning coach (the most wins in the history of Division II women’s 

basketball) Lonnie Bartley, FVSU has won 10 SIAC Championships 

with 11 appearances in championship games. The 2010-11 team also 

advanced to the NCAA South Region Tournament. 

Women’s Tennis In 2011, the Lady Wildcats Tennis Team 

grabbed the SIAC Eastern Division title and finished second in the 

conference tournament. The success on the court was met with 

increased fan support during tennis matches and lays the groundwork 

for a solid, competitive program in the years to come. 

Softball After a second place finish in 2010, the Lady Wildcats 

claimed this year’s SIAC Softball Title for the second time in school 

history. With the 2011 championship comes an automatic invitation 

to participate in the NCAA South Regional Championship. The 

NCAA Tournament appearance is the first for FVSU in softball. 

Track & Field This season, 13 student athletes qualified 

for the NCAA Track & Field Nationals for the second year in a row. 

The team includes two-time NCAA Division II Defending Triple Jump 

champion Antoinette Oglesby. The Lady Wildcats Track & Field Team 

finished fifth in the nation last year. 

Project 250/50 

This year, the FVSU Foundation, Inc. has 

teamed with the athletic department for 

Wildcat Project 250/50 that was established 

to help increase the number of scholarships 

for athletes and traditional FVSU students.

10 th Anniversary of the 

John W. Davison Lecture Series 

Ten years ago, Fort Valley State University established a lecture series to honor John 

Wesley Davison, the first principal of the Fort Valley High and Industrial School. 

The objective of the project was to emphasize to students and community residents 

that education extends well beyond the classroom. Over the years, the series featured 

notable speakers such as Ludacris, Tasha Smith, Terri Vaughn, Dr. Lewis Baldwin, 

Spike Lee, Richard Roundtree, Dr. Cornel West, Tim and Daphne Reid, Mae Jemison, 

Fredricka Whitfield, Dr. Ian Smith and Nikki Giovanni. The JWDLS provides an 

opportunity for students to meet and question guest speakers who are successful in 

their career fields. Students are shown how their experiences as undergraduates can 

lead to an abundance of opportunities outside the ivory towers of FVSU. 

FVSU Gives Back 

The FVSU family counted its blessings on 

Thanksgiving and gave back to the community 

by remembering families impacted by the economy’s 

downturn. FVSU’s faculty and staff provided 

more than 40 baskets filled with enough food to 

feed a family of four. FVSU and the Warner Robins 

Boy Scouts of America, Pack 422 delivered 

the goods with Dr. and Mrs. Rivers.

Retired Georgia Agriculture Commissioner 

Tommy Irvin is a long-time friend and 

supporter of Fort Valley State University. 

The longest-serving Georgia official 

and the longest-serving agriculture 

commissioner in the United States 

marked his retirement from office with a 

major gift to the university’s scholarship 

fund from a campaign account. 

“I have felt a special connection to Fort 

Valley State since I first ran for agriculture 

commissioner back in 1970,” Irvin 

explained. “I wanted to do good with 

the remaining funds in my campaign 

account, so I transferred $50,000 in 

stock to aid students. The law allows me 

to do this, and I am glad that I could.”
