Photoshoot Tips 

• Choose a photographer 

experienced in shooting 

hair and understands 

how to properly light hair 

color. 

• Connect with 

photographer on 

inspiration. 

• Have a strong foundation 

of the image, feel and 

inspiration of shoot set. 




• Pre-lighten whenever 

possible and deposit 

shades that you want to 

preview so that they can 

be seen on camera. 

• Make sure they are true to 

swatch as opposed to 

dealing with lifting natural 

hair color and only getting 

minimal lift. 

• Go stronger with your 

formula choices as color is 

a reflection of light and 

may be muted on camera. 




• When pre-lightening, 

always lift with a 10 volume 

and then deposit with demi. 

• Hair needs to look healthy 

on camera. 

• Donʼt use high volumes 

and try to lift with lighteners 

too fast. All you will see is 

damage on camera. 




• When doing darker shades, 

try to place or surround 

them with lighter shades for 

camera. 

• If you put them too close to 

darker shades, you will lose 

them. 

• Placing them next to lighter 

shades will make them pop 

and stand out. 




• Place most of your colors 

around the face and top. 

• Make sure to use more 

than one shade so that 

when you comb the hair in 

different directions the 

color can take on a whole 

new feeling. 

• Shoot from many different 

angles, so you get the 

maximum out of your color. 




• Unless you are shooting the 

back of the hair for a specific 

reason, donʼt bother coloring the 

back with multiple shades. 

• Focus your detailed attention to 

the top and sides. Focus on 

areas that will be seen by the 

camera eye. 

• Remember in photographic 

events, you are shooting in 3 

dimension. 



Closing Photoshoot Tips 

• Model Call: Ask models to come in prior to the event so 

that you can test porosity and see canvas you are 

working with. 

• Pre- treatments may be necessary for the best featured 

look on camera. 

• Remember the “Camera sees everything!” 

• Make sure to remind models to have clean hair when 

they arrive at the shoot.
