As the name suggests, this luxurious hotel is perched on
a cliff overlooking the sea, so the views are the real
talking point. And everything else is just as impressive
– so much so, in fact, TripAdvisor singled it out for its
2009 Travellers’ Choice Award.
Location • If there was an Oscar for best location,
Cliff Bay would be preparing its acceptance speech. Set
on a corner of rocky headland on the edge of Funchal
harbour, it offers up grandstand views of the cruise ships
coming and going. Plus it’s just a five-minute walk to the
Lido’s shops, restaurants and cafés. The hotel runs a
courtesy bus to Funchal centre, too.
Rooms • Dressed in sophisticated neutrals, the
rooms here come with satellite TVs, DVD players and tea
and coffee-making equipment as standard. Plus each
one has a marble bathroom and a private balcony or
garden terrace. If you’d like to make the most of the
stellar setting, book a sea-view room.
Dining • Eating in is the new eating out at the Cliff
Bay. Every night there’s something new at the Rose
Garden Restaurant’s themed buffet. At Il Gallo d’Oro
it’s à la carte all the way, with a first-class fusion of Italian
and Mediterranean. The restaurant is the proud owner
of the first Michelin star to be awarded on the island,
so remember to dress for the occasion, which means a
jacket and tie for the gents. During the summer, the
hotel might close the Rose garden and set up the Blue
Lagoon Restaurant instead – it means you can enjoy
your dinner al fresco. As for drinks, the Cliff Bar & Bistro
does a mean line in shaken and stirred cocktails.

Relaxation • The hotel’s grounds step down the
hillside, so the little extras are tucked-away. Firstly, there’s
a heated indoor-come-outdoor pool set on the top tier
of the sun terrace. From here, you can take the lift right
down to a salt-water lagoon pool at the bottom. There’s
a scuba centre there, too. But the real talking point is
the famous Cliff Bay Spa. Designed by British architect,
James Ward, it combines treatment rooms, garden
gazebos and ESPA products to raise the bar on
relaxation.
