This hotel has bagged itself Funchal’s front-row seat. It’s
right in the middle of the old town and looks out across
the yacht-filled port. The rooms come with kitchenettes
and verandas, and facilities include a health club, a

Location • As the only hotel right on the
promenade of Funchal’s old town, this place has hit the
location jackpot. There are plenty of shops and
restaurants nearby, and the town’s trademark
17th-century architecture is on tap. What’s more, the
hotel sits right on the water’s edge, so it comes with a
side-order of harbour views. Pebbly Sao Tiago beach and
the Sao Tiago Fortress are on the doorstep, too. Plus
the cable car that runs up to the picturesque village
of Monte is nearby.
Rooms • Not only are all the rooms here modern
and stylish, but they come with the added extra of a
kitchenette so you can rustle up your own meals. On top
of that, they all have balconies. For a view of the Atlantic,
plump for a Sea View Studio. Alternatively, wake up to
the smell of sub-tropical blooms in a Garden View
Studio. If you want to go all out, book a Junior Suite
– they come complete with double beds, and some have
separate living areas. In-room safes are also available
for a little extra.
Dining • The hotel offers up huge buffets in the
Arsenal Restaurant, with themed à la carte menus on
hand if you really want to indulge. After-dinner drinks

lapping waves, meanwhile, pull up a pew at the
Promenade Bar.
Relaxation • Landscaped gardens, sun terraces
and a large lagoon pool – the Porto Santa Maria has got
the lot. Add an indoor heated pool and a whirlpool bath
– plus a sauna that’s payable locally – and you’ve got
everything you need for a relaxing break, too. If you like
to unwind with a round of golf, there are two courses on
the island.
