Dr Ian McLeod joins the team of
senior wordsmiths at Litteris
Brussels, October 2011 – The constant quest for excellence in written communication at
Litteris now results in a new language scholar joining the group: Dr Ian McLeod, a
distinguished Australian literature scholar, currently teaching English at Institut Libre
Marie Haps.
Because of the vast diversity of communication needs in Litteris’ client base, the agency is
perpetually on the lookout for exceptional writing skills. Networking activities combined with
their share of luck made the agency meet yet another wordsmith.
An impressive record of achievements
After studies of French and German language and literature at the University of Queensland, Ian
McLeod went to Oxford as the Queensland Rhodes Scholar for 1973, where he completed the
Oxford doctorate in comparative literature with a dissertation which was the definitive study of
the plays of Brecht and Sartre. While at Oxford, he founded the pioneering and prestigious
journal of literary theory, the Oxford Literary Review, together with Robert J.C. Young and Ann
Wordsworth.
Dr McLeod also held the following positions:
Senior Tutor in Linguistics at the Karl Marx University, Leipzig, Germany.
Lecturer in German at the School of European Studies at the University of Limerick in
the Republic of Ireland.
Lecturer at the Faculty of Education at the Queensland University of Technology
Training Manager at a large computer firm in central Queensland
Lecturer in German at the Institute of Technology in Tralee, Ireland
Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of Languages at the National College of Ireland
in Dublin.
In 2008 he was made Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques de la République française in
recognition for outstanding services to the study of French language, literature and culture.
Dr McLeod is a published poet and a previous winner of the Australian Commonwealth Literary
Award for Poetry. His latest book, published in November 2010 by Leuven University Press, is

the authoritative scholarly translation of Jean-François Lyotard's central work of philosophical
aesthetics, Les TRANS/formateurs Duchamp. He has published many scholarly translations, most
notably from the works of Jacques Derrida, including the well-received and much-quoted English
version of La Vérité en peinture.
