Mak<strong>in</strong>g is Learn<strong>in</strong>g -<br />

practical media work <strong>in</strong> school sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>The</strong> accessibility of digital media production tools is a significant issue <strong>for</strong> schools,<br />

generat<strong>in</strong>g a tension between the democratic impulse and current retrogressive ideologies<br />

favour<strong>in</strong>g traditional content, skills and knowledge. Old dichotomies between the<br />

academic and the vocational are re-surfac<strong>in</strong>g, often result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the deployment of<br />

practical media work <strong>in</strong> educational sett<strong>in</strong>gs as a <strong>for</strong>m of vocational <strong>in</strong>dustry tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This and other <strong>in</strong>strumental policy shifts <strong>for</strong>eshorten the potential <strong>for</strong> personal cultural<br />

enrichment and universal exposure to relevant literacy practices <strong>in</strong> relation to digital<br />

media.<br />

This research explores a possible rapprochement between the academic, the arts, the<br />

technical and the economic imperative by <strong>in</strong>terrogat<strong>in</strong>g the pragmatic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of craft<br />

and the critical/creative af<strong>for</strong>dances of digital composition and edit<strong>in</strong>g. It is suggested<br />

that a cultural reconciliation between these contested discourses might be reached and<br />

argues the need <strong>for</strong> a reconfiguration of pedagogy and mean<strong>in</strong>g-mak<strong>in</strong>g practices <strong>in</strong><br />

schools - more <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal transmedia learn<strong>in</strong>g experiences outside school.<br />

<strong>The</strong> study argues <strong>for</strong> a shift <strong>in</strong> our conception of young learners as active, socio-culturally<br />

aware new literacy participants: as critical consumers and competent crafters of<br />

omni-textural materials, with an <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med grasp of the dynamic context with<strong>in</strong> which<br />

they and others are act<strong>in</strong>g, shar<strong>in</strong>g and contribut<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
