This paper presents Keith’s on-go<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong>to the relationship between<br />

youth media practices and <strong>for</strong>mal media study. It is an ethnographic<br />

action research study based on the preparation of one A-Level media<br />

studies class <strong>for</strong> their exam<strong>in</strong>ation over the course of a year. Research<br />

data has been gathered <strong>in</strong> various <strong>for</strong>ms: video record<strong>in</strong>gs of all lessons,<br />

focus groups, teacher blog, and students’ written and practical work. In<br />

addition digital data that crosses the boundaries between home/school<br />

and work/leisure has been collected: SMS texts, e-mails and Internet<br />

search history. It has been necessary to conv<strong>in</strong>ce a str<strong>in</strong>gent research<br />

ethics board of the vital need <strong>for</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d of data whilst protect<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

students, the school and the researcher <strong>in</strong> devis<strong>in</strong>g effective child protection<br />

systems that primarily safeguard the young people tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong> the<br />

research.<br />

Through a supposedly simple be<strong>for</strong>e/after series of action research cycles<br />

on teach<strong>in</strong>g film, journalism and new media, the research has questioned<br />

notions of digital natives, agency and literacy - immersed <strong>in</strong> wider debates<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated by the <strong>Media</strong> Studies 2.0 critique.<br />

<strong>The</strong> paper also wants to reassert the ‘political’ nature of both youth media<br />

practices and <strong>in</strong>stitutionalised media learn<strong>in</strong>g offer<strong>in</strong>g a nuanced approach<br />

to the study<strong>in</strong>g of media texts <strong>in</strong> the digital age.<br />
