Integrated Journalism Education <strong>in</strong> Spanish Universities:<br />

how is media convergence taught<br />

<strong>Media</strong> are constantly evolv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractive <strong>for</strong>ms. <strong>The</strong> university should also <strong>in</strong>novate to<br />

match this context. Four ma<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es of action will engage learners, teachers and companies<br />

to focus on what’s required to achieve and foster excellence <strong>in</strong> the world of media<br />

convergence. <strong>The</strong>se key axes are:<br />

(1) <strong>Media</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration: the cooperation between press, radio, TV and Internet. (2) Simulation<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (3) Bonds between media companies and University (4) Internationalization:<br />

Intercultural exchange and opportunities to improve language skills.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ERASMUS LLP “Integrated journalism <strong>in</strong> Europe” project is develop<strong>in</strong>g a new learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

methodology based on these key axes. <strong>The</strong> first results of this project, based on a content<br />

Analysis of the Curricula of all 36 spanish Journalism Universities, have mapped the development<br />

of media convergence <strong>in</strong> Spanish universities. Based on a complete journalism<br />

studies database patterns have emerged. We have established different models to classify<br />

schools and universities accord<strong>in</strong>g to the different ways of teach<strong>in</strong>g practical <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

journalism. <strong>The</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e, it provides an expanded actual view of media convergence <strong>in</strong> spanish<br />

education and how journalism studies are organized.<br />

Irene Da Rocha is project manager of IJIE Integrated Journalism <strong>in</strong> Europe. She<br />

teaches at Pompeu Fabra University “Integrated Journalism Workshop”. In 2011 she was<br />

awarded the UPF’s Prize of the Social Council <strong>for</strong> the quality of bachelor teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
