Warp’d Filmmak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Barry Ryan is Head of Production <strong>for</strong> Warp Films.<br />
Low budget <strong>in</strong>dependent films. Four words that def<strong>in</strong>e most of<br />
the films made <strong>in</strong> the world every year. But time and aga<strong>in</strong> we<br />
focus on the first two words rather than the last two words. <strong>The</strong><br />
driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ce beh<strong>in</strong>d a successful film is never how much money<br />
you have to spend but the idea beh<strong>in</strong>d the film and how you go<br />
about execut<strong>in</strong>g it. Warp Films have redef<strong>in</strong>ed how films and TV<br />
<strong>in</strong> the UK are produced by throw<strong>in</strong>g out the rulebook the same<br />
way Warp Records redef<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>dependent music.<br />

Barry l<strong>in</strong>e produced Warp’s first short film, My Wrongs 8245-<br />
8249 &117, which was written and directed by Chris Morris.<br />
<strong>The</strong> film won a BAFTA <strong>in</strong> 2003. He then l<strong>in</strong>e produced Warp’s<br />
first feature, Dead Man’s Shoes, which was nom<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>for</strong><br />
Best British Film at the 2005 BAFTAs. <strong>The</strong> film went on to w<strong>in</strong><br />
the Hitchcock D’Or at the D<strong>in</strong>ard Film Festival. Barry has also<br />
produced the comedy Grow Your Own, written by Frank Cottrell<br />
Boyce and Carl Hunter and directed by Richard Laxton.<br />
Prior to work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Warp, Barry ran Cargo Films which made<br />
a number of successful shorts (Puffer Fish, Sound Effects of<br />
Death & Disaster, You Are My Favourite Chair) and the ultra low<br />
budget feature, Jelly Dolly, which won the best film award <strong>in</strong><br />
2004 at the Britspott<strong>in</strong>g Festival <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>.<br />
