<strong>The</strong> Success and Failure of <strong>Media</strong> Education<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g a period of cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g expansion, media education has<br />
recently found itself on the defensive. While there is a cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />
need to assert the importance and value of what we all do, there<br />
are also some awkward questions that need to be addressed<br />
here. Given the long history of media teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> schools and<br />
universities, why are we still hav<strong>in</strong>g to argue <strong>for</strong> basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
What is it that we are actually defend<strong>in</strong>g when we defend media<br />
education And is media education always worth defend<strong>in</strong>g In<br />
this presentation, David will look back on his own experience over<br />
several decades as a media educator, and draw on work about<br />
the history and politics of curriculum change. In do<strong>in</strong>g so, he will<br />
explore some of the contradictions and tensions that cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
to characterize the field. <strong>The</strong>se <strong>in</strong>clude: the divide between ‘academic’<br />
and ‘vocational’ courses <strong>in</strong> higher education; the tensions<br />
between English (or literacy) and media education <strong>in</strong> schools;<br />
and the refusal of both cultural and educational policy makers to<br />
support a broad and coherent def<strong>in</strong>ition of ‘media literacy’. David<br />
will argue that the development of media education has been<br />
particularly hampered by the failure to create effective dialogue<br />
across and between different educational sectors.<br />
David is Professor of Communication and <strong>Media</strong> Studies at<br />
Loughborough University. He has previously worked at the<br />
Institute of Education, University of London where he founded the<br />
<strong>Centre</strong> <strong>for</strong> the Study of Children, Youth and <strong>Media</strong>. David is one of<br />
the world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g researchers on media education media literacy<br />
and children and young people’s <strong>in</strong>teractions with media. He<br />
has written many of the key texts <strong>in</strong> these fields, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Youth,<br />
Identity and Digital <strong>Media</strong> and Beyond Technology: Children’s<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Age of Digital Culture.<br />

David has addressed conferences <strong>in</strong> more than 30 countries<br />
around the world, and has been a visit<strong>in</strong>g professor at universities<br />
<strong>in</strong> Norway, Italy, the US, Hong Kong, Australia and South Africa.<br />
He still manages to f<strong>in</strong>d the time to make regular appearances<br />
<strong>in</strong> broadcast media and journalism, where he is consulted as an<br />
expert <strong>in</strong> media literacy.<br />
