“Medical Care, Education, Empower Women and<br />

Develop Skilled Manpower”<br />

Kumudini is a Bengali name meaning ‘sacred lotus’, symbolizing the dream of the founder, Rai<br />

Bahadur Ranada Prasad Shaha, to care for the community in education, health and environment<br />

sector. Kumudini was officially inaugurated in 1944 with its Hospital and later Bharateswari Homes.<br />

Kumudini’s objectives are to provide free medical care for the rural people, spread education<br />

among the mass, empower rural women, develop skilled manpower and create a harmonious<br />

environment by promoting mutual tolerance and self reliance.<br />

Kumudini Trust is spread over 82 acres of land in Narayanganj and employs more than 1,500<br />

employees and around 5,000 seasonal workers. The most distinctive aspect of Kumudini is its<br />

workers’ relentless drive, self-sacrifice and desire to serve mankind.<br />

Kumudini Handicrafts<br />

Kumudini’s welfare activities range from its renowned hospital to<br />

nursing school and its handcrafts. The first enterprise of Kumudini<br />

Trust, its hospital is one of its successful endeavors. It aims to serve<br />

the poor and give them free treatment. It has expanded its services to<br />

surgery, diagnostic facilities and recently research and training<br />

facilities as well. School of nursing of Kumudini also works to help<br />

empower women specially abandoned or widowed women of poor<br />

families in the villages. The destitute and distressed widows are later rehabilitated as hospital workers.<br />
