Bend Man Hit By Train, Sent to the<br />

Preliminary autopsy results point to heat stroke as the cause <strong>of</strong> 16-year-old Sergey<br />
Blashchishen's August 28th death while on a hike in a northern part <strong>of</strong> Lake County.<br />
Blashchishen was in the care <strong>of</strong> SageWalk, a wilderness camp for troubled teens based in<br />
Redmond. The lead investigator issued an affidavit for a search warrant <strong>of</strong> SageWalk, which<br />
stated criminal mistreatment by the program directly resulted in Blashchishen's death. His<br />
mother, who immigrated from Russia and now lives in Portland, still can't understand how her<br />
son could have died.<br />
"It's not like, very severe exercise, like military bootcamp. It was educational bootcamp and<br />
adventure bootcamp," said Lyudmila Blashchishena.<br />
According to the affidavit, the teen, who was one day into the wilderness experience, was not<br />
yet acclimated to the camp setting, may have only ate about 800 calories over more than 24<br />
hours, and showed signs <strong>of</strong> heat stoke prior to collapsing. He subsequently stopped breathing<br />
and died.<br />
"There was a lack <strong>of</strong> appropriate reaction to his medical emergency," said the Blashchishen's<br />
attorney, Gordon Gannicott.<br />
SageWalk said in a statement: "SageWalk considers student safety our number one priority<br />
and takes this incident very seriously. Over the course <strong>of</strong> our 12 year history, our program has<br />
adhered to the highest standards <strong>of</strong> care and we currently meet or exceed all industry and<br />
state standards."<br />
Lake County Deputy Sheriff Chuck Pore tells <strong>KOHD</strong> it will take some time to finish the criminal<br />
death investigation. Quote: "Right now, with still hundreds <strong>of</strong> documents to review and more<br />
interviews, it [the investigation] will be a while. The investigation remains a huge focus, but<br />
there has been so very much to consider."<br />
