Report 1st European Traditional Wushu Championships in Tallinn, Estonia April 11th-17th 2011
The 1st European Traditional Wushu Championships were held in Tallinn, Estonia from April 11th till
17th . On April 9th and 10th the EWuF held a traditional Taolu judges course and a Qingda judges
course. Also during this time the European Grading system was initiated and some duan grades were
taken from several applicants.
The teachers were under the guidance of EWuF Vice President Mr. Gleb Muzrukov, head of the EWuF
Technical Committee. The teachers were: They Soon Tuan for Taolu, Roland Quenon for Qingda,
Tatiana Kupriyanova for the grading system. Stewart Beckett acted as chairman of the EWuF judges
commission. Raymond Smith gave his full support and knowledge for the qingda and grading system.
After the First successful traditional judges course the EWuF had the yearly Congress on April 11th .
Some 26 countries attended Congress. Mr. Henk Verschuur was elected as one of the Vice Presidents
of the EWuF. (full report and minutes will following soon)
That evening we had the opening ceremony in the competition sport hall in Tallinn. This opening
ceremony was short and effective. The EWuF, Organising Committee had the honour to have the
Secretary General of the Estonian Olympic Committee Mr. Toomas Tõnise to give a warm welcome to
all participants. Some representatives from the Chinese Embassy were also present. The musical
frame was provided by the Estonian army Music ensemble. They played during the march in of the
EWuF flag and the teams.
During the opening ceremony the EWUF awarded the highest EWuF duan grades to 3 people who
have dedicated a live time to the promotion and evolution of Wushu in the continent. Other duan
grades were also awarded.
This 3 nominees for 7th duan were: Raymond Smith 7th duan grade, Patrick Van Campenhout 7th
duan grade and Gleb Muzrukov, 7th duan grade
6th duan grades were awarded to: Petru Grindeanu, Roland Quenon, They Soon Tuan, and honorary
6th duan to Giuseppe Falconi.
A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of the EGS by Raymond Smith and Gleb
Muzrukov. They have worked on the amended technical standards and have been in close discussion
with the Chinese Wushu Research Institute Director Prof Kang Gewu to finalise the World Grading
System. It should be noted that the updated EGS standards mirror the proposed WGS so there should
have no problem integrating the EGS into the WGS when it is finalised by the IWUF. Prof Kang was
present in Tallinn and saw the way the EWuF has handled the EGS and he was satisfied we did a good
job maintaining the required standards. The preparation of comprehensive materials supporting the
EGS has been made by Gleb Muzrukov including very good DVD’s, pins, badges, belts and certificates.
This has involved a great of work on his part.
During the opening the national dance ensemble of Tallinn gave some nice Group dance
performance in the traditional Estonian costumes. Very nice to watch. Finally we received some very
nice demonstrations from the Russian Wushu team, the Wing Tsun team and the Estonian Wushu
Federation. The audience loved the performances and after 90 minutes the Opening ceremony was
finished, this was much appreciated by the team leaders and athletes.
On April 12th the competition started on time thanks to the very good and hard work of the EWuF
Logistic Unit. Jeroen and Niels worked till night to finish and amend some errors from the coaches.
The Technical meeting was held with all team leaders and Gleb, Roland, Stewart, Suan , Jeroen, Niels
and others did the drawing lot together with the teams. 16 countries competed in this
championship.
The previous inspection visit done by the EWuF Secretary General Patrick Van Campenhout was very
useful. The airport, hotels and sport hall were very near in order that the transport provided by the
Estonian army was very efficient. This is a good idea for future events relating transport projects.
