In the differential settling model, the particulate matter concentration in the effluent is
calculated based on the following equation:
Equation 11.14
where:
Xj,o
Xj, in
aeff
= concentration of particulate state j in effluent, mg/L
= concentration of particulate state j in influent, mg/L
= removal efficiency
The concentration in the underflow (concentrated) stream is estimated by making a mass
balance around the object.
Equation 11.15
where:
Xj, un
= concentration of particulate state j in underflow, mg/L
Qin = influent flow rate, m 3 /d
Qo = effluent flow rate, m 3 /d
Qun = underflow rate, m 3 /d
The underflow rate, Qun, is specified by the user as a constant value or as a fraction of the
influent flow rate. The overflow rate is estimated by using the flow balance equation as
below.
Equation 11.16
The soluble compounds in the influent are mapped to the effluent and underflow streams
without any transformation.
