219 Attached-Growth Models<br />

Each layer of the biofilm is modelled as a CSTR with the same biological reactions as the<br />

suspended-growth biological model (See Appendix A for the mantis model).<br />

Attachment and detachment coefficients are used to provide for a means of transfer of<br />

particulate components between the biofilm surface and the liquid film. This<br />

conceptualization is shown in Figure 7-1. The concentration of each particulate state<br />

variable is converted to volume based on the dry material content of biofilm and the<br />

density of biofilm (both user inputs). When the volume of each layer is filled (based on<br />

maximum biofilm thickness and number of biofilm layers) the next layer begins to fill.<br />

When the film thickness approaches the specified maximum, increasing detachment of<br />

biofilm will occur.<br />
