New Caterpillar plant for Indonesia
CATERPILLAR will build a mining truck facility
on the Indonesian island of Batam to improve
its support of mining customers in the Asia Pacific.
A range of mining truck chassis and bodies
will be produced at the facility and shipped
to mining customers throughout the region.
The company plans to invest US$150 million
in the facility, which is expected to be operational
in 2012 for truck bodies, with first
trucks produced in the third quarter of 2013.
It will be Cat’s second manufacturing operation
in Indonesia. The existing facility, in Cileungsi,
West Java, opened in 1982 and is
focused on producing excavators and skidders.
The company has approved plans to
triple excavator production at Cileungsi.
Since the beginning of 2010, Caterpillar has
announced a series of investments and capacity
expansion plans for operations across
Asia, including a quadrupling of excavator
production in Xuzhou, China, and a total of
nine new facilities, which are under construction
in China. The company has 16 facilities in
China, along with four research and development
centres and three logistics and parts
centres. It has previously announced the construction
of two new manufacturing operations
in Thailand.
Its Indian operations have started producing
40 ton and 50 ton class off-highway
trucks (770G and 772G) and the 998 H
loader for construction, quarry and mining
applications. Manufacturing facilities are at
Hosur, Thiruvallur and Pondicherry in southern
India. The facilities produce engines and
power generation equipment, quarry and
construction trucks, mining trucks, backhoe
loaders, wheel loaders and a wide variety of
New features for the Cat D9T include enhanced operator safety, comfort and convenience, refined performance and
increased productivity.
related components.
Meanwhile, Caterpillar has announced a
number of new features for the Cat D9T aimed
at easing the operator’s job and boosting production.
There are adjustable arm rests, new
automatic climate control and the standard Cat
Comfort Series Seat is now available with optional
heat and ventilation. The new Dynamic
Inclination Monitor provides readouts of the
tractor’s pitch angle and side-to-side slope
while a new operator-presence system locks
out the power train and hydraulic system to
avoid unintentional machine movement when
the operator is entering or leaving the cab.
An available visibility package includes mirrors
on the lift cylinders and a ROPSmounted
camera system with an 18cm
colour monitor near the rear view mirror. Incab
sound levels are decreased from 79 to
77 dB(A), and a new dash display, high-current
12-volt connector, IPOD/MP3 wiring and
optional window shades add convenience.
New for the D9T is the Enhanced Auto Shift
(EAS) system, which provides operator-selectable
forward and reverse speeds. The
system can provide increased production,
fuel efficiency and ease of operation. Cooling
system refinements include a new radiator
featuring an aluminium bar-plate design that
is extremely durable and corrosion-resistant.
A new air-to-oil hydraulic cooler results in
lower hydraulic-oil temperatures for extended
component life, and the hydraulically driven,
variable-speed demand fan provides optimal
cooling while using less power, reducing fuel
consumption and lowering sound levels.
Shell Tellus delivers for Barrick Gold
LEADING international gold producer Barrick
Gold Corporation sought assistance from
Shell Lubricants in a bid improve performance
and reduce energy consumption at its Plutonic
gold mine in Western Australia. Barrick
operates 25 gold mines around the world, including
seven in the Australia–Pacific region.
Shell Lubricants worked with Barrick engineering
staff to identify energy-efficiency
opportunities and suggested that the company
would benefit by changing its hydraulic
motor lubricant from Shell Tellus S2
M to Shell Tellus S4 ME.
Barrick agreed to implement a six-month trial
of the new lubricant in two Hägglunds MA 200
hydraulic motors installed on conveyors at the
mine. During the trial, Barrick measured several
factors including load, temperature, filters,
filter ratings, lubricant viscosity and viscosity
index. The results were recorded by a highly
accurate power monitor provided by Shell.
The results of the trial showed that using
Shell Tellus S4 ME in the two hydraulic motors
reduced annual energy consumption by
the equivalent of 5.27%, which equates to
US$10,520 a year. Barrick also benefited
from extended oil-drain intervals and reduced
labour costs and downtime, and expects
to extend equipment life. The
company is planning to use Shell Tellus S4
ME across its operations. Shell Tellus S4 ME
hydraulic fluids are designed to help users
to improve the energy efficiency of their hydraulic
systems without compromising the
system protection or maintenance procedures
of their equipment and operations.
Shell Tellus S4 ME has been demonstrated
statistically to produce energy savings
in applications such as plastic injection
moulding and metal pressing, with typical results
in the range of 1–4%. In addition, Shell
Tellus S4 ME is also designed to help prolong
equipment service life and lower maintenance
costs by providing outstanding
wear protection and long oil-life capability.
