Fusion first development option for JV
THE Fusion magnetite project in South Australia
is the preferred option for the first mining
development of joint venture partners
Centrex Metals and Wuhan Iron and Steel
Corporation (WISCO). The site is west of
Tumby Bay on the Eyre Peninsula where
large-scale drilling is planned at three deposits
to further evaluate the project’s current
resource of 454.4 million tonnes.
Fusion is one of a number of advanced exploration
assets being assessed by the joint
venture across the southern Eyre Peninsula.
It consists of four deposits which have been
targeted by the JV managers Eyre Iron for environmental,
social and resource testing.
Three of the deposits – Koppio, Brennand and
Kapperna - are seen as capable of supporting a
large-scale, long-life magnetite concentrate operation
as well as the necessary infrastructure.

edge of the Fusion area and could provide ore
feed for the project in the longer term. Eyre Iron
is confident of proving a large enough resource
base at the three main deposits to underpin the
initial 20 year life of the mine.
Environmental and scoping studies are
under way as well as large diameter drilling to
provide diamond core results for metallurgical
test work. Test work to date shows a high
quality concentrate blend can be produced.
Fusion is 40km from the proposed Port
Spencer deep water export facility that is
under development by Centrex to transport
product from mine to port via a low impact
slurry pipeline. The company says water for
the Fusion project will be provided by a desalination
plant at Port Spencer with a return
water pipeline to the site.
Centrex has recently received payment of
Aus$8 million from another joint venture partner,
Baotou Iron & Steel Group Company
(Baogang), which will provide for commencement
of stage 3A of the Bungalow Magnetite
Joint Venture. It is the third progress payment
by Baogang which has now invested Aus$24
million in to the joint venture.
The payment will enable the project, also on
the Eyre Peninsula, to steadily continue rather
than wait for the completion of stage 2 in
2012. A number of key tasks on the critical
path to development have now commenced,
including further resource definition drilling,
metallurgical test work and baseline environmental
studies to support the mining lease
proposal and pre-feasibility study.
The payment has resulted in Baogang
being assigned a further 10% interest in the
iron ore rights on the licence, taking its equity
in these rights and the JV to 30%.
