Scope of Selwyn feasibility expanded
PROMISING drill results and a review of metallurgical
processing have prompted joint venture
partners Selwyn Resources and Chihong
Canada Mining to expand the scope of a feasibility
study at the Selwyn zinc and lead project
in northwest Canada. Chihong is a whollyowned
subsidiary of Yunnan Chihong Zinc &
Germanium Co and is earning a 50% interest
in the project, with expenditure of Can$100
million on exploration and development.
Wardrop, a Tetra Tech Company, was engaged
in January 2010 to undertake the engineering
and technical work required for a
feasibility study. The initial proposed work on
the development plan is nearing completion,
however JV company Selwyn Chihong Mining
has determined that the scope of the proposed
engineering work and feasibility study
needs to be expanded and revised.
As at September 30, 2011, Selwyn Chihong
had spent about Can$73 million of the
total amount. The project is in eastern
Yukon and straddles the border with the
Northwest Territories.
Exploration drilling at the XY West deposit
and at depth in the area between Don and
Don East deposits, referred to as Don Connector,
has defined excellent mineral potential
that may be beneficial to include in the mine
plan being evaluated.
To advance this goal, Selwyn Chihong will
resume drilling on Don Connector to confirm
the presence of significant new mineral resources
and, if successful, undertake preliminary
mine evaluation to determine whether
these mineral resources should be integrated
into the current mine plan.
It plans to drill an additional 12,000 metres in
the Don Connector area to better define the
tonnage and grade of the shallow dipping mineralization.
The target area has dimensions of
900 metres by 250 metres, with several thick
intercepts of high grade mineralization indicated
from recent drilling, which included
54.94 metres @ 7.78% zinc and 2.84% lead,
including several zones of very high-grade mineralization.
The new drilling is projected to be
completed by March 2012 at which time a new
resource estimate will be completed for Don
Connector, and an evaluation undertaken to
determine whether it should be included in the
mine plan for the feasibility study.
Selwyn Resources is concentrating on exploration at and around the XY West deposit.
In recent drilling Selwyn Chihong completed
22,488 metres of diamond drilling on XY West
deposit and a new mineral resource estimate is
in progress to provide an updated resource for
XY West. Proximity to the XY Central deposit,
and modest pre-development requirements for
accessing the deposit, makes it an attractive
addition to the mine plan for XY Central.
Preliminary information from a recent reevaluation
of the inclusion of dense media
separation (DMS) technology in the crushing
circuit indicates that it could provide significant
reductions in overall energy consumption
in processing. Additional work is planned
to further evaluate the implications of including
DMS in the mill plan.
