China More balanced approach to resource supplies CHINA will increase exploration and apply advanced technology in order to provide a more balanced mix of domestic resources and overseas imports to feed its ongoing growth. As part of this push the government will also strive to ensure a more environmentally sustainable approach to mining. China’s vice-minister of Land and Resources Wang Min told delegates at the 13th China Mining Congress and Expo in Tianjin that the ministry had established 47 blocks for strategic exploration in various parts of China and announced its methods for ‘Improving Mining Rights Management for Coordinated Exploration’. “We will use domestic and overseas resources and markets in a more balanced way to ensure the country’s resource supply during the 12th Five-Year Plan to 2015. “The ministry will announce new mining rights and welcomes the participation of domestic and foreign mining companies.” He said the ministry would use new exploration methods and establish a market-oriented pattern that placed more importance on technology as well as inter-departmental coordination. “The government will increase efforts to create a more favourable environment for exploration.” Wang Min said the government also planned to restructure the mining industry and implement green mining initiatives. Measures include stricter mineral resources planning, integration of mineral resources and a system of mining rights while newer mines will be developed in accordance with green mining standards. “We’ll do away with badly distributed mining rights, restructure mines and improve the scale and intensiveness of mining resources development. We will expand the scope of green mining projects to more than 600 demonstration sites within five years.” The ministry will announce new mining rights and welcomes the participation of domestic and foreign mining companies. He said the ministry would use new exploration methods and establish a market-oriented pattern that placed more importance on technology as well as inter-departmental coordination. The government will increase efforts to create a more favourable environment for exploration Land and Resources Minister Xu Shaoshi said the mining industry would follow a green, low-carbon, sustainable path. “We will improve industry management and insist on protective measures during exploration. We will also try to restore the natural environment of mines and create better natural surroundings for local people.” Reflecting the commitment to more sustainable mining, Datong Coal Mine Group, a coal producer in Shanxi Province, intends to become a leader in energy saving and environmentally friendly development. Its chairman Zhang Youxi told the China Daily: “Developing a recycling economic model is the optimal way to sustain development at coal mines around the world and green exploration is the principle we need.” He said the Tashan mine was taking the lead in environmentally friendly development with its Tashan Circular Economy Park and its clean coal developments. “Washed coal is transported by a special railway, residual coal pieces are used to produce methane, coal rubble is separated and used to make bricks, and low-value coal is used by the power plant to generate electricity. Excess heat from the power plant is used to warm residences in the area, fly ash discharged by the power plant is used as raw material for a cement plant and the shale left by the excavation process is used as raw material for kaolin.” The group also has forest projects around its mines while residential areas around old mines have been replaced with greenery and forests. It has also started construction on the Jinhuagong National Mine Park, the first in China, which will open in 2012. Indonesia Significant gold results at Tandai DRILLING at the Lusang North prospect of the Tandai joint venture of Sumatra Copper & Gold and Newcrest Mining in southwest Sumatra has resulted in significant gold intersections. The latest results at this discovery confirm that mineralization is hosted in a series of vein breccias. The vein breccias, which are similar in appearance to those mined at the historically productive Tandai Lode, were intersected in the first hole at Lusang North, about 200 metres north of Tandai Lode. A second hole was drilled from the same site at a steeper angle and returned seven separate intersections from 21 to 187 metres. These are 3 metres from 21 metres @ 2.09 grams/tonne gold and 2.6 grams/tonne silver; 4 metres from 31 metres @ 20 grams/tonne gold and 19.5 grams/tonne silver including 2.1 metres @ 37 grams/tonne gold and 35.6 grams/tonne silver; 2 metres from 41 metres @ 3.53 grams/tonne gold and 9.5 grams/ tonne silver; 4.1 metres from 60 metres @ 8.84 grams/tonne gold and 17.9 grams/tonne silver; 6 metres from 68 metres @ 2.47 grams/tonne gold and 5.7 grams/tonne silver; 1 metre from 82 metres @ 4.43 grams/tonne gold and 7.2 grams/tonne silver; and 4 metres from 183 metres @ 3.71 grams/tonne gold and 17.2 grams/tonne silver. Sumatra C&G’s chief executive officer Julian Ford says the company is highly encouraged that the early drilling has resulted in significant intersections: “What is encouraging is both the high grade gold intersections and width of mineralization. It is important that this discovery is very close to the historic Tandai Lode and yet remained undiscovered by previous explorers. “Our current understanding suggests the mineralization is mostly blind and does not outcrop except in an artisanal working. A significant CSAMT anomaly occurs 300 metres to the west of the current drilling and will now be tested by new drill holes.” The Tandai joint venture is in southwest Sumatra and includes historic workings. Tandai is an under-explored, high grade gold and silver project. It is about 100km north of Bengkulu, covers about 1000sqkm and has reported historic production of 1.4 million ounces of gold and 15 million ounces of silver. January/February 2012 | ASIA Miner | 39
