Production delayed at Eastern Dragon
Eastern Dragon construction continued during the chilly northeast China winter.
PRODUCTION at Eldorado Gold’s Eastern
Dragon project in Heilongjiang Province is not
expected to begin until the third quarter of
2012 with the company unable to complete
construction owing to it not yet receiving the
Project Permit Approval (PPA) as well as the
early onset of winter. Earthworks programs
are now expected to be carried out during
the Northern Hemisphere spring.
The PPA is the key permit required to allow
earthworks to proceed at the tailings facility,
waste dump and open pit areas. Eldorado
continues to work with the provincial government
on advancing the permit application and
remains confident of a successful outcome.
These works are the last remaining hurdle
before gold production can begin. Remaining
construction activity was all but completed by
the end of 2011 with contractors demobilized.
The company made a concerted effort
to finish all outside work before the winter
season set in. Piping and electrical installations
in the process area have begun and will
be completed during winter.

There are proven and probable reserves of
764,000 ounces @ 7.71 grams/tonne gold and
7 million ounces of silver @ 71 grams/tonne.
Resources comprise 852,000 ounces @ 7.50
grams/tonne gold in the measured and indicated
categories and 8.3 million ounces of silver
@ 73 grams/tonne, and 190,000 inferred
gold ounces @ 2.67 grams/tonne.
Eldorado’s president and chief executive
officer Paul Wright says, “Despite the disappointment
associated with not being able to
complete construction as planned by the
end of 2011, we are extremely pleased with
both the strong performance of our mines
which are all operating in accordance with
plan and the excellent start-up of our Efemcukuru
Mine in Turkey.”
Eastern Dragon will be the company’s
fourth operating mine in China behind Tanjianshan,
Jinfeng and White Mountain. While
production is ongoing, the company is continuing
exploration at and near these projects.
At Tanjianshan, diamond drilling has focused
on the 323 Deposit and Qinlongtan
Deeps target. Assay results at 323 indicate a
good correlation of gold values from section
to section and support existing geological
and resource models. Reverse circulation
drilling has been completed in the ZXS target
area, directed towards identifying possible
geochemically anomalies concealed beneath
Quaternary gravels.
At Jinfeng, five underground drills and two
surface drills have conducted exploration
drilling. Underground targets included the F3
and F7 fault zones, as well as conceptual targets
in the footwall to the deposit. Results
broadly support the revised structural model
for grade distribution within the deposit. The
company has also been active on four exploration
licence areas in the Jinfeng district.
At White Mountain, stepout drilling of the
deep zone at the north end of the deposit
area has been carried out.
