Fluid couplings avoid AFC downtime
THE Jin Cheng Coal Group, one of the biggest
coal groups in China, found a way to avoid
unexpected downtimes of the AFCs (armored
face conveyor) and to raise the productivity of
the Chang Ping Coal Mine. In the past, the
underground mine was facing a lot of problems
because of their AFC drives equipped with two
two-speed motors but then the head of Jin
Cheng decided to replace the two-speed motors
with Voith Fluid Couplings (type 562 DTP-
KWL2), in order to prevent chain breaks as well
as gearbox and motor break downs in the future.
The couplings provide a lot of benefits for
AFC drives. “Based on the hydrodynamic principle,
the fluid couplings protect the whole
drive train from overload situations, which
often happen at Chang Ping Coal Mine”, head
of the Mechanical and Electrical Department of
Chang Ping Coal Mine, Mao Weihong says.
“The 562 DTPKWL2-1000 couplings are so
powerful that they can easily handle blockages
of the AFC without downtime or damage of the
equipment.”
Mao Weihong says he is very satisfied with
the exchange of the equipment. Furthermore, he
compliments the reliability of the couplings and
especially their soft start function. “For upcoming
mining projects, we will also rely on Voith
Fluid Couplings to raise our productivity.”
Since installation of the couplings in 2009,
the AFC experienced no chain breaks, which
also means significantly reduced maintenance
efforts. Nowadays, the 225 metre wide and
1000 metre long coal panels produce an annual
output of 3 million tonnes in the Chang Ping
mine and the situation of the coal mine has,
Fluid couplings enable less downtimes and increased productivity at the AFC.
therefore, greatly improved.
Located near Jin Cheng City, Chang Ping
Coal Mine employs more than 6000 people and
produces 6 million tonnes of coal each year.
Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic
drive, coupling and braking systems for road,
rail and industrial applications, as well as for
ship propulsion systems, is a group division of
Voith GmbH. Voith sets standards in the markets
of energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials
and transportation & automotive. Founded in
1867, Voith employs more than 42,000 people,
generates 5.7 billion Euro in sales, operates in
more than 50 countries around the world and is
today one of the biggest family-owned companies
in Europe.
Whittle implements new Prober C software
WHITTLE Consulting, which provides strategic
planning services for mining companies,
has announced a significant upgrade to its inhouse
Prober software. The company says that
the new software can increase mining NPV by
5% to 35%, or substantially more.
After more than 3 years of development, prototyping
and testing, Whittle says Prober C
enables intricate modelling of multiple steps in
the mining value chain, bringing technologies
such as mine-to-mill, selective blasting, ore
sorting, and complex comminution strategies
into the strategic planning process.
“New technologies in ore characterization
and extraction processes enable substantial economic
and energy saving opportunities,”
explains Whittle Consulting CEO Gerald
Whittle.
“Developments in these areas, led by our
alliance partner JKTech, have clear operational
benefits, and now we can harness their strategic
significance by re-optimizing the pits/phases or
underground mines, mining methods, life-ofmine
schedules, cut-off grade and stockpiling
strategies, processing policies, product strategies,
logistics and capital scaling decisions to
apply these technologies in an integrated fashion.
This will compound economic performance
and capital efficiency to new levels,”
Gerald Whittle says.
For the last decade, Whittle Consulting has
helped mining companies substantially improve
the cash flow profiles of their mining projects
and operations through an integrated approach
‘Enterprise Optimization’. In many cases net
cash flow is doubled in the first 3 to 5 years,
usually with little or no capital expenditure
involved.
As the trends continue towards lower grade
and problematic ore bodies, escalating costs,
scarce capital and diminishing margins, it says
the Enterprise Optimization capability will help
progressive mining companies lead the way in
terms of competitiveness and sustainability.
Enterprise Optimization, often nicknamed
the ‘Money Mining’ approach, is underpinned
by Prober software developed by Jeff Whittle,
founder of the Whittle business and the developer
of the original Whittle Pit Optimization
software that has become the industry standard
for mine planning over the last three decades.
Jeff Whittle, now 83-years-old, explains,
“We have been using the previous version
Prober B for more than a decade. It allows for
three steps in the value chain: mining, processing
and production, although with some clever
but convoluted modelling more could be
accommodated.
“The new Prober C supports unlimited
sequential or parallel procedures, making more
detailed yet more intuitive modelling of complex
mining and processing technologies possible.
This is then simultaneously optimized to
maximize the value of the business,” he adds.
Whittle Consulting works with alliance partners
Ausenco, Gemcom/Geovia, JKTech,
Xstract, VBKom, MineQuest and Edison
Research to deliver the Enterprise Optimization
services worldwide.
