Tips for<br />
Enjoying the reserve<br />
The following information <strong>and</strong> tips can help ensure a safe<br />
<strong>and</strong> enjoyable experience while at the property:<br />
• <strong>Ellis</strong> <strong>Acres</strong> <strong>Reserve</strong> is open daily from<br />
dawn to dusk.<br />
• Feel free to bring a camera, binoculars<br />
<strong>and</strong> field guides for observation of wildlife.<br />
• Swimming is prohibited on the property.<br />
• The trails located on the property might<br />
include uneven or unstable terrain, so<br />
wear appropriate footwear.<br />
• Do not remove or disturb any of the<br />
l<strong>and</strong>scape on the property.<br />
• Hunting is prohibited on the property.<br />
• Fishing from the shoreline is prohibited.<br />
• Refrain from approaching or feeding<br />
any wildlife.<br />
• Bring with you plenty of water to drink,<br />
but ensure that any litter is properly<br />
disposed of.<br />
• Bring with you a hat, sunscreen<br />
<strong>and</strong> sunglasses, <strong>and</strong> wear<br />
appropriate clothing for the<br />
current weather conditions.<br />
• Pets are not allowed on the property.<br />
Public L<strong>and</strong>s<br />

P r o g r a m<br />
On November 2, 2004, <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>County</strong> voters<br />
approved a public-l<strong>and</strong>s referendum<br />
by more than 70 percent of the vote.<br />
The referendum called for up to an<br />
additional one-third millage to allow the<br />
<strong>County</strong> to issue $36 million in bonds<br />
for the acquisition <strong>and</strong> improvement of<br />
l<strong>and</strong> to protect drinking water, improve<br />
water quality of rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes, protect<br />
open space <strong>and</strong> provide passive<br />
recreation areas.<br />
To date, more than 2,000 acres have<br />
been acquired through the Public L<strong>and</strong>s<br />
Management Program, which was<br />
established in September 2005. Three of<br />
the properties, <strong>Ellis</strong> <strong>Acres</strong> <strong>Reserve</strong>, The<br />
Pasture <strong>Reserve</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Lake</strong> May <strong>Reserve</strong>,<br />
have been opened to the public. The<br />
opened properties include passive trails<br />
<strong>and</strong> scenic views of a wide variety of<br />
wildlife <strong>and</strong> Florida native plants.<br />

<strong>Ellis</strong> <strong>Acres</strong> <strong>Reserve</strong>, located in Paisley, totals approximately 415 acres. The southern<br />
96 acres of the property contain Longleaf Pine wooded pasture <strong>and</strong> forested wetl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />
The remaining 323 acres includes pasture, wetl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> lake bottoms. The property<br />
encompasses nearly the entire western shoreline of <strong>Lake</strong> Akron, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s west to<br />
<strong>County</strong> Road 42. Many species of wildlife have been observed at the site including<br />
the Florida black bear, Florida s<strong>and</strong>hill crane, white-tailed deer, Sherman’s fox<br />
squirrel, <strong>and</strong> wild turkey.<br />
<strong>Ellis</strong> <strong>Acres</strong> will gradually be restored to native s<strong>and</strong>hill, wetl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> pine<br />
flatwoods communities, with the goal of increasing protected areas for<br />
wildlife. The property is in an area identified as a “very high” priority<br />
of the state-wide Ecological Greenways Network <strong>and</strong> is adjacent to<br />
both the Ocala National Forest <strong>and</strong> Seminole State Forest. Future<br />
passive recreation opportunities will include picnic areas <strong>and</strong> a<br />
canoe launch.<br />

Black bears are the only species of bear<br />
found in Florida, <strong>and</strong> are the largest native<br />
l<strong>and</strong> mammal in the state.<br />

Between 5 to 6 feet long <strong>and</strong> about 3 feet<br />
high at the shoulder.<br />
Weight:<br />
Adults can weigh between 150-400 lbs.<br />
Diet:<br />
Plants, fruits, nuts, <strong>and</strong> berries. May also<br />
include insects <strong>and</strong> small animals.<br />
