the bank stamp.<br />

NOTE 2 - No payment shall be claimable in respect of any stamp use for the purpose of making up a broken<br />

amount unless it is proper stamp as envisaged in Clause 10.<br />

NOTE 3 - The person presenting the postal order may remove those postage stamps from the postal order for<br />

which no allowance can be paid provided that there is no likelihood of fraud.<br />

246. Offices authorized to sell and cash. – <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al Orders for fixed sums from 50<br />

Paise to 100 Rupees, are sold either for cash or for cheque, vide clause 94(a) and (b) and paid by<br />

all head and Sub-<strong>Post</strong> Offices in <strong>India</strong>. Branch <strong>Post</strong> Offices at which application may be made for<br />

<strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al orders, will obtain them and deliver them to the purchaser. The Branch <strong>Post</strong> Offices<br />

may also pay postal orders after obtaining an order of payment on the postal order from the<br />

account <strong>office</strong>.<br />

247. Entries by purchaser. – The purchaser of an <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al Order must before <strong>part</strong>ing<br />

with it fill in ink the name of the person to whom the amount is to be paid and is recommended to<br />

fill in also in ink the name of the <strong>office</strong> of payment as a precaution in case the order should be lost<br />

or stolen. If the purchaser does not know which post <strong>office</strong> is most convenient to the payee he<br />

should insert the name of the town; village or district where the payee resides. The order will then<br />

be paid at any Head of Sub-post Office in the locality named. If the sender desires that payment<br />

should be made through a bank, he should cross the order in ink in the way in which it is usual to<br />

cross cheques. The sender may also write his name and address on the reverse of the order where<br />

provision has been made for the same.<br />

248. Payment of <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al Orders. – (1) Before a <strong>Post</strong>al Order can be paid, the name<br />

of the payee and the name of the <strong>office</strong> of payment must be filled in and the order must be properly<br />

receipted. If a <strong>Post</strong>al Order be crossed, payment will be made only through that Bank. No <strong>India</strong>n<br />

<strong>Post</strong>al Order will be paid even though presented for payment by a Bank, unless the name of the<br />

payee be inserted in the body of the order. A crossed <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al Order for payment through the<br />

<strong>Post</strong> Office Savings Bank account should be made payable at any post <strong>office</strong> within the same<br />

postal district as the post <strong>office</strong> at which the payee’s <strong>Post</strong> Office Savings bank account stands open<br />

is situated and should bear after the payee’s name the <strong>part</strong>iculars of the payee’s <strong>Post</strong> Office<br />

Savings Bank account. It should be presented, duly receipted by the payee, at the post <strong>office</strong> along<br />

with the pass book of the <strong>Post</strong> Office Savings Bank account of the payee. If the value of the<br />

crossed <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al Order is less than a rupee, the depositor should pay the balance in cash to<br />

make up the amount to a rupee.<br />

(ii) Banks which have entered into an express agreement, with the <strong>Post</strong> <strong>office</strong>, <strong>part</strong>iculars<br />

of which may be ascertained on application to the Head of the Circle, are entitled to obtain<br />

immediate payment of all <strong>Post</strong>al orders presented by them, whether or not such orders have been<br />

receipted by the payee and without regard to the <strong>office</strong> at which they may have been made<br />

payable.<br />

Exception.- This rule does not apply to crossed <strong>India</strong>n <strong>Post</strong>al orders addressed to deceased<br />

members of the Defense Services, which may be paid under the sanction of Superintendent of <strong>Post</strong>
